Happy pride to those 5 seconds where Charlie Swan thought Jacob was coming out to him in the most insane way possible
world’s first cool loser
I really really love Percy's arc of learning to accept (and like) change. You can really see throughout the books how much he struggles with it and it makes so much sense why he would crave stability (all the different schools, lack of friends, tumultuous home life).
Things just kinda suck for him all the time, but in the end he still chooses not only to give up on that idea for himself, but also to demand that the gods actively change as well. Because things do suck right now and if they remain as they are, it's Going to get worse, so they have to do something about it, they have to change to make things better.
#the irony of giving ur character this whole motif then proceeding to freeze him in time to beat that dead horse until it stops bleeding cash (via @dapiando)

show percy literally does not earn anything i said what i said. everything he knows about greek mythology, sally fed to him as opposed to him learning on the go. each of the kind acts he performs, it’s because he remembers something his mom told him rather than because he identifies with being abused and marginalized SINCE HE DOESNT FUCKING EXPERIENCE THAT ONSCREEN. from the get-go, percy kills alecto without having to move a fucking muscle. instead of struggling through the grief annabeth experiences in her sirens’ vision, he’s simply just too fucking cool and Boyfriend to see anything else other than annabeth. the show having no stakes doesnt just mean no tension in the story, it also means no gratifying payoff when something comes to pass. how am i supposed to feel roused by percy rallying the camp for battle in the s2 finale when we’ve never seen him have any fleshed out interactions with the camp as a setting and as a population save for an obligatory one-minute montage. which is also why they NEED TO BE CASTING SIDE CHARACTERS.
back when pjotv s2 was airing I basically ragequit halfway through the season because I was fed up with the show's approach to tyson and its disability messaging (or lack thereof) but then two of my close friends were interested in the show, neither of whom had ever read a percy jackson book in their lives or knew anything about the series going in, so we all watched the entire show together (and I finally finished s2) and something I found funny (or maybe just sad) was that all 3 of agreed that clarisse was the best character while this percy jackson guy was remarkably difficult to care about
percy is probably the most popular character in the fandom and when you investigate why exactly that is you'll probably find a consensus that while percy's zero-to-hero journey from tlt to tlo is fine and good, what people really respond to is his hatred of cruelty, his ability to stand up for others even under challenging circumstances, and his capacity to be kind and caring towards disadvantaged people because he himself knows what it's like to be disadvantaged. these are not only aspects of percy that endear him to the audience but they're the entire reason why percy is the most important character in this story
so why would I, someone who cares about percy as well as his role in the narrative, enjoy a version of him that guiltlessly supports sacrificing clarisse's undead soldiers to her face? why would I, someone who cares about the tyson-percy relationship, about the fact that one of the only times percy cries in the entire series is when tyson leaves him to go work in the forges, enjoy a version of them that dedicates more screentime to percy's shortness and annoyance with tyson than his protectiveness of and genuine love for him? why would I, someone who appreciates percy's tendency to struggle with communicating and understanding his own feelings, his petty arguments with annabeth, his insecurities and awkwardness and lack of confidence, enjoy a version of percy that is capable of saying "I'd burn down olympus for you" as early as season 2? (never mind the fact that this line means nothing because this show has done very little if anything at all to establish what significance olympus even has to percy, much less given me, the viewer, cause to care about its hypothetical destruction this early in the series... it's almost like you have to establish why something is important in order for lines like this to land emotionally or something)
all of this is why I imagine there's just always going to be a critical disconnect between fans of the show who defend it no matter how lackluster the writing is and me. because they don't care about the same things that I do and they probably don't know why I care in the first place
truly one of the biggest letdowns in piper's writing in hoo specifically is how it doesn't dig deeper into charmspeak and what a disturbing thing it is to have the power to control someone's mind. like I swear this is interesting stuff and more people would get into piper as a character if this were explored a bit more in the text. you definitely see piper disturbed by her own power and hesitant to use it (and note that like many other characters, i.e. leo and hazel, her powers have always been a source of trouble in her life - like how she got in trouble for stealing a car even though all she did was ask for it), but in my opinion the books spend way too much time in piper's perspectives on other stuff when charmspeak is such an unusual and fascinating and terrifying power that offers so many interesting avenues of character exploration
and I really wish the books would have talked more about the canonical fact that charmspeak is more effective against people who are (or could be) physically/sexually attracted to the user. this is a power that children of aphrodite have - a power that is implicitly tied to sexuality as a defense or offense. like this inherently necessitates that piper weaponizes her sexuality against monsters and deities and giants and any other antagonist that want to harm her. which is crazy. especially because she's a teenager and especially because piper is initially characterized as an underconfident girl who goes out of her way to downplay her appearance (do you guys remember how much harassment piper goes through in the books and what little gravity is afforded to those moments... like she has dangerous characters aggressively flirting with or expressing attraction to her A Lot, and she has to play into that attraction to save herself or her friends no matter how uncomfortable it makes her)
I think there's such a dark undertone to all of this that's worth investigating. we know that piper doesn't like herself, doesn't like her powers, and doesn't like demigod life. hoo has her on a journey to become more confident in herself as a person and as a daughter of aphrodite but it's always going to be fucked up that part of her role in the prophecy seven is becoming confident enough in herself that she gets better at weaponizing her ability to violate the free will of others - and her ability to use her sexuality as an armament of war

I used to think it would take a monster to put someone in a place like that office. Especially if the person was himself. But we're not monsters, Mark. Not real ones.

post tlo percabeth trying to figure out how to be a couple and it’s cute and sweet and fragile but also they’ve spent the last year at each others throats and now they have to figure out what to do with all the lingering tension. there is some resentment re: LUKE
annabeth spent forever defending him to percy’s immense chagrin. luke, who eventually did make the right decision in the end and it was percy that had to trust he would. annabeth grieving him and being so conflicted about whether or not she can confide in percy about how she feels, feeling guilt at not being able to help him when he came to his house which is even worse when hermes blames her. percy feeling resentment towards luke even though he technically died a hero, seeing annabeth grieve him and wanting to be there for her while dealing with his own complicated feelings. neither of them knowing how to deal with their feelings about him and how to talk about him to each other, luke haunting their relationship from the beginning
more to be said but so interesting to think about the tension between them even after getting together. there’s the weight of everything they’ve seen during the battles, the resentment from the past year, navigating a new relationship there’s SO much they need to get through, even after a happily ever after
love books. because it’s like what if something happened

I kinda wish we got more scenes of them teaming up on HoO. I honestly think their dynamic could’ve been really interesting to expand on.
