"Don't you dare apologize for bleeding on me." // and this <3

The laugh was unlike him, really; a little higher-pitched than usual, a slight bit what one might call hysterical. He wasn't, really. There was no hopelessness, no panic. No real need to do anything but wait it out because he'd drained himself of any and all available energy, healing as he needed to until the point where there just wasn't anything left and he'd kept going too long--
He was already tired when something got its teeth in his leg, and the adrenaline paired with the unthinking moment of sheer offense was really what gave his swing enough power to permanently dislodge the culprit. Riku went down hard despite the victory, not actually sure if Zack had caught him on the way down or not. Everything kind of spun around an extra turn or twenty as he was really and truly empty of curatives or magic, equal parts annoyed and happy to move as little as possible for a little bit. Just a little.
"Still. Didn't mean to." He caught up with the conversation just a little fashionably late.
"Stop being brave for five minutes and let me help you." // also this.

"This isn't your responsibility." Riku snapped without looking back at Nero, seeing something blacker than night and enormous rise from the ground ahead of them. There were only so many things it could be, the scent of Darkness wafting off of it instantly.
He could do it. He could, on his own, leaving Nero to do what he needed to do which was--
Taking care of the very place that was getting reduced to rubble as the Heartless solidified, right. Riku let out a chiding kind of laugh to himself alone. It took a bit of a reminder; he was with someone who fought like he did, for some of the same reasons.
"But if it were your responsibility," he called out over the Heartless' bellow, "I'd be grateful. You want legs or arms?"
❝ you seem pretty composed for someone carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. ❞ // -slides this here.-

Riku almost stumbled his next step, the stranger cutting to the quick fast enough to nearly actually feel a bit wounded by it, if not winded. Generally it was some overbearing "bad guy" delivering a line like that along with a big villain speech, but--
He already knew the guy wasn't an enemy, an ally at the very least. The words maybe just... pushed something people didn't normally touch. Blowing out a breath, his suddenly stiff shoulders relaxed a bit, good humor returning. "Oh yeah? This a 'takes one to know one' situation?"

It really wasn't how a Master should behave. Probably.
Then again, after having truly met and spoken with a few more of them, well. Excuses were definitely not on his mind as he and Sora took off like a shot, no longer a race against each other but keeping pace together easily enough to hopefully escape the danger that followed.
Riku had almost, almost slipped and alerted the duck to their position with a laugh that just about worked its way free before he bit down on it, covering his mouth with his hand as the cramped room was cast in darkness. He might be able to see, but--
Ah. It took a little more maneuvering than he'd expected to pry his hand away from his mouth without accidentally elbowing Sora or worse brushing a hand against him. For all the enormous rooms and excessively oversized doors, Disney Castle had ridiculously tiny closets. Maybe that just make sense, considering the residents. Or maybe, maybe...
Maybe Riku was just desperately trying to keep his mind occupied because his body was certainly aware that Sora was right there and much closer than he should have been and it was probably a bad idea to have hidden in there after all, but they couldn't very well just leave yet. Sora's words got him to huff out a sound of amusement as quietly as he dared, but that only made him realize on the inhale that they were close enough to share breath.
And of course he'd been aware that Sora had a particular smell (not for creepy reasons, it was just... inescapable in close quarters, given everything), but when it was that much and that close and then all of the desperate ignoring he was doing in regards to his own body was shattered utterly with an accidental touch to his chest--
He might have cursed. Silently, he hoped, breath shuddering out of him before he had the chance to catch it, trying to keep that much steady even if his heart felt like it was beating out of his chest. He really-- He really should say something... "'Sokay."
Yeah, alright. So that one word managed to sound just a little bit wrecked for no reason and he hoped Sora didn't notice either that, or the fact that he was crowding himself as tightly against the opposite wall as he could because he was definitely not going to be able to explain himself if he concentrated on how the warmth of those fingertips lingered or how very easy it suddenly could have been for him to just tilt his head forward a little bit, not even remotely aware that he was looking at Sora with an intensity that seemed difficult to define.

Ah, how simple it was to rile up a being when you could start prodding at the right spots. Amber eyes are focused, unmoving from the hero that stands before the shell. No need to lift a blade or even a finger when words will crawl beneath skin, puppet the flesh to do what he desires. . .
“ Indeed, childhood is not of something I have personal experience of, however, such occurred for the two-parts that made my whole. ” Not to mention the times he would observe the Somebodies upon Radiant Gardens, from full grown adults, to children still learning to walk, and even those so old their bones groaned and creaked with every step, “ A simple experience for most ; well studied and spoken about even to prying ears. ”
“ Although, most only speak of children filled with joy or wonder. Hardly ever uttering a word about those who swayed from the light or normalcy. . . a blemish upon their fallacy of innocence. ”
The moment, the experience, picked at something primal, unconscious; familiar in the worst possible way, the voice, the feeling, like a recurring nightmare. This man (nobody?) was a nightmare. Or maybe a new one that Riku was having which felt a little more mundane than usual, but he'd grown accustomed to knowing the difference between sleeping and waking worlds.
It was... Xemnas. Something of him, at least. Sharper than his own memories, full focus, the cadence and qualities of his speech sending an itching little tingle through his palm. He could draw his Keyblade with a twitch, if he needed to. The situation was threatening but there had not been an active threat, and for a moment there was some kind of intensity in that aquamarine gaze that might have lead to something violent and impulsive--
Riku snorted instead, shaking his head. "Yeah, no direct offense, but I'm not sure you were ever an expert in light or normalcy, either." And, well, there was a point in that rambling that even he had to acknowledge, but not out loud. He wasn't completely convinced that he wasn't having perhaps the oddest dream he'd ever had, and he would certainly stay on his guard, but curiosity (concern) got the better of him. "What are you doing here?"
The snort might have been easily misconstrued as dismissal were it not for the undeniably fond smile Riku was unsuccessfully trying to hide. "It's not like I don't see them at all anymore, it's just... rare." For whatever reason.
(For several reasons, but nevermind.)
Gaze dropping and going a bit distant, the smile remained. "They were so strange. At first, anyway. Bright colors, weird sounds, and they needed so much attention." None of those things sounded like complaints, because they weren't.
The smile thinned somewhat. "They fought alongside us, but they did get hurt sometimes. At least, with me. I'm guessing with Sora, too. They could heal, but it was still... difficult." They hadn't talked about that part. Of course.
Riku shook his head, trying to banish the idea. "It was fun, too. Getting to borrow their powers for a while. I didn't realize why at the time, but it just felt natural? Easy. Especially flying. Dream logic, I guess."

Lyrics:
can you hear the calling of the raving wind and water?
we just keep dreaming of the land 'cross the river
we are always on the way to find the place we belong
wandering to no where, we're paddling
down the raging sea
who can cross over such raving wind and water?
on the rolling boat we sit, shivering with coldness
come by an island, come by a hillock,
it's just another place, we paddle on
down the raging sea
but in one morning we'll see the sun
bright shining morning dew singing
they who will search will find the land
of evergreen
can you hear the calling of the raving wind and water?
we just keep paddling down the sea, up the river
no destination, but we are together
in the silent sadness we're paddling
down the raging sea
down to no where
He'd sort of lost track of when he'd last slept soundly. Slept well. When he was a child, he imagined. When days were nothing but sand and wooden swords and play fighting. Mostly with his best friend.
Even then, though, he wasn't exactly care-free. At some point, it occurred to him that swords weren't just toys, they meant something. And anything that meant something had to be paid attention to, learned. Swords were weapons, but they were for defense too. Eventually, he became pretty good at sparring, and took it upon himself to teach by way of demonstration. Something like that. He'd taken on responsibility.
That hadn't really interrupted his sleep, not in full. It occasionally made rest uneasy, though.
Even the night the islands fell, the very moment he embraced what felt like his destiny, that wasn't what fully cemented his inability to have a peaceful night. It was the full realization alone that Sora and Kairi weren't there with him.
Maleficent's manipulation "helped" in a way, sure. But it never let him rest. After that--
Too much happened. Running, fighting, certainty that he was right, and then certainty that he was wrong. That the consequences were lasting, and the sword that meant something had been misused by his hand. The sharp, terrifying reminder that he could not give up. Not at any cost. He had to make it right.
More running, after that. More fighting. More Darkness that would not let him rest, which occasionally felt ironic. Mostly, it felt deserved.
Not even was there decent sleep after emerging from the Dark Margin with Sora. Aching and wounded and exhausted beyond anything he'd ever felt before, having been pulled back from the dark by Kairi, accepted in full by Sora, welcomed back to his childhood home...
That night had been one of the worst. His body took several more days to finally, fully relax, and still he was always on high alert.
A journey through the Sleeping Worlds should have been nothing but rest, and yet there was none to be found even upon waking. Then he'd been named a Master, but--
Sora hadn't. And then Kairi was requested. Who could sleep, let alone rest? Confident as he felt, sure as he was that they would win, that Sora would prove he'd been worth the title from the very beginning, that the three of them were all going home together...
Sleep was the result of exhaustion, anymore. A physical act that the body would fall into on its own if ignored long enough. And the dreams, when they did happen--
Mixed blessing. Whether he slowly woke up in whatever position he'd collapsed in or shot awake with a gasp and a name on his lips, he just...

Sora buried his face deeper against Riku's shoulder, fingers clutching the back of his soaked jacket. Every shaking breath came out as another broken sob, his entire body trembling violently..
"I found you..." he whispered, the words catching against Riku's collar. "I—I found you..."
For so long there had only been gray.
Gray skies.
Gray walls.
Gray thoughts.
Every day had bled into the next until he'd begun wondering if he had imagined color in the first place and now—
Now Riku's heart was beating against his own and it drowned everything else out.
The elevator chimed somewhere nearby as voices echoed through the lobby. Sora didn't hear any of it.
"...Don't let go."
It wasn't a request, no this was the terrified plea of someone who believed the world might tear them apart again the instant they separated.
His grip only tightened.
"I can't..." Sora admitted in a voice so small it barely existed. "Please..."
His breathing hitched again.
"They told me..." Another shaky inhale. "They kept telling me there wasn't anyone out there."
His eyes squeezed shut.
"That there wasn't anything left." His voice cracked so violently the words almost disappeared. "I tried to believe them."
He had. God... he'd tried. He'd tried because fighting had hurt. It hurt so much and every failed attempt to leave had ended with Xehanort gently steering him back inside, Strelitzia looking at him with heartbreaking pity and the apartment becoming just a little smaller each time.
He'd started wondering if they were right.
"I started forgetting..." Sora confessed, horror creeping back into his voice. "...myself."
That frightened him more than anything.
"I couldn't remember what it felt like..." he whispered. "To be... me."
His fingers loosened just enough to curl into the fabric over Riku's heart instead.
Don't let go. As if he ever could. As if he'd ever want to. "Okay." Easy agreement came in a whisper only loud enough for the precious person in his arms to hear.
There were people around them. Riku couldn't help but be partially aware of that, of the inherent need to protect the very thing he'd been searching for and found again, but they were distant. Background noise, like the ache in his limbs, the cold wet clothes that clung to him. Sora was warm enough, alive enough, to draw his full attention. Hold on to me, hold on--
He felt a distinct little metaphorical stab to his chest when Sora kept talking, remaining silent just to catch everything. Even when it hurt to hear, when it prodded at a mix of grief and rage to even conceive of someone trying to convince Sora to abandon his (at times questionable but never failing) optimism.
I waited too long. The guilt choked him a little before he cast it off. No, he hadn't, and he couldn't think like that. Not when the sheer embodiment of faith was clinging to him and looking for comfort, not when Riku was fulling willing to do everything he could.
It wasn't until the confession of forgetting when rage outweighed the grief. Sora had been through enough forgetting. Enough losing himself in bits and pieces or altogether; he'd barely held on to his own sense of being too many times already, having to rebuild, reform, trampling his own frustrations with a smile. Fully realizing that had certainly inspired the type of guilt and shame that he might have drowned in if he hadn't already been so focused on a mission.
Riku felt a little like they were holding each other together in that moment, trying not to hold too tightly but it was difficult. Not a dream, not a hallucination, it was finally really Sora, a knowledge that his heart already accepted but his mind hadn't fully wrapped itself around, and he was so--
No, he wouldn't even let the word broken into his thoughts, because that wasn't true. Sora was never broken. He was wounded beyond anyone's understanding, maybe, but there was still that light. That heart that felt so alive connected to his again without distance or filter. The idea got a quiet little sob from Riku as well, trying to compose himself but failing. Just a little uneven breathing, then. Some gasping, some swallowing, some--
Sora is here. His emotions were a gnarled mass of too much as he leaned even more heavily against the pillar at his back, a mix of searing hot and cold, darkness like a wispy reminder in his throat on the edge of every breath, but it simply remained there, beneath the surface. He was angry and heartbroken and so, so selfishly relieved, but it was so wrong that Sora would apologize to him for a hurt he wasn't remotely responsible for.
"I'll always find you." Riku croaked, barely sounding like himself, wanting nothing more than to pull back and look at Sora even if the smile could be heard in his voice, but he didn't dare try break an amount of contact. He swallowed against an aching throat and swore, "It might... take a while. I might need lots of help, but I will always find you."
And then, perhaps a little unwisely, the thorns that snagged against his thoughts needed to be addressed. They. A trickle of cold at the back of his neck, feeling Darkness at his fingertips if only he was ready to reach for it. (He wasn't. He was not. But he was grateful to feel it there.) "Who lied to you?"
