"Yesterday saw the eagerly awaited battle between two of the worlds fiercest and most evenly matched football rivals - Noah And The Whale vs Planet Earth. Surprisingly few people turned out to watch this much anticipated grudge match at Regent’s Park (0 people in fact) but that didn’t prevent it from being a no holds barred concoction of aggression, passion, blood, guts and skill. "One P Earth player had a nose bleed within five minutes - the NATW goalie (moi) was viciously targeted with a ball to the face as P Earth clearly saw a strict Vinnie Jones mentality as their only route to victory, and Davs of P Earth again got a ricochet ball into his adam’s apple only minutes after recovering from his bloody nose. "It would be unfair to all concerned to publish the results of the game here but, needless to say, there was a vast amount of skill, flair and eye catching teamwork on display with Tom Fiddle scoring the goal of the game with a neat header and Urby Whale putting in an absolutely stellar display as sweeper, after some initial confusion over what the role of sweeper actually entailed. A two minute team talk, a quick viewing of some old Ruud Gullit tapes and a wee nip of JD put all to rights at half time and the second half was perhaps even more riveting than the first as everyone surprised themselves by the quite ridiculous amounts of stamina on show." (x)
"Both teams had been in training for weeks/seconds beforehand, and the game itself had been proposed for a while; few believed it would become reality. Noah’s resident documentarian Ben Stradler has already posted about it here, although i should warn that as Noah’s goalkeeper his perspective is highly biased, and indeed he doesn’t even mention the eventual scoreline (9-8 to Planet Earth). "We were fortunate enough to be joined by Alan Pownall up front who proved a lithe and accomplished performer. Elsewhere we were indebted to Clive James Robinson for his positional flexibility, Nick ‘Uncle Brioche’ Olorenshaw for his Keegan-esque 70s nonchelence and Doug’s friend Davs for his alround good sportmanship in the face of some early blood-loss. The game begun, of course, with the national anthems, hands on hearts as Noah sung ’5 Years’ and us ‘Bergman Movies’.” - Planet Earth (x)

Fink wrote his second album about his break-up with Marling, and it was a soul-baring affair. “There’s an element of catharsis in songwriting, and then you take it out on the road. I hadn’t really thought that through, it was so personal and specific. I think it’s important as a singer to invest yourself emotionally in every performance, otherwise it’s kind of cold. But, in another way, it can be cathartic feeling your connection to the song dwindle. You feel as if you’ve got a different view: you can look at it from above now, rather than inside.” He has, he admits, enjoyed touring Noah’s new album rather more. “These songs feel like universal home truths. You can really sing them out”. The subject matter of the album is “the possibility of change, and the availability of it, that moment when you decide that you want to follow a different path”. (x)

Noah And The Whale
‘“I always wanted to do a film with this album,” he reveals. “The idea was obviously that you want the film to evolve the same themes and ideas as the record. My initial idea was to have it about a band’s last show. So it was a teenage band, a coming of age story, and then I went through various ways of trying to imagine where it could be, where that could take place. “The thing about an album, what’s great about it is, your imagination builds the set for the stories in the songs. I didn’t want to set it anywhere that was too familiar, so I got this idea of setting it in this kind of fictional world. And once I started that, the idea just evolved and evolved.” The film and the album tie together thematically, as you might expect. “A lot of the album is about the end of adolescence, and becoming a man,” he explains, “I wanted something that, to me, serves as a metaphor for that, and that’s just an experience I’ve had, of being in bands that end. In fact, I remember the initial idea was that I wanted to make the last waltz for a teenage band no-one gives a shit about. I thought that would be really cool, and it kind of went from there.” Noah And The Whale fans, don’t panic – this most definitely isn’t a sign of the band gearing up for their own final hurrah. Charlie’s very positive about it all: “I’m still enjoying playing in the band a lot, I don’t envisage wanting to do it anywhere else.” And when we point out that the band’s big breakthrough, ‘5 Years Time’, coincidentally came out a whole five years ago, he seems pretty confident that he wouldn’t change much. “I try not to think about things like that. The funny thing is, I see my friends who have careers in music, and see things change so quickly; you start out very young and you live a pretty long life. The things that feel significant at one time, another time won’t be. That was when we started getting opportunities. It was a great moment for us. There’s no way we’d have had the opportunities to make the albums and films that we have if we hadn’t had that. I feel good about it.”’ (x)
