The widespread use of cellphones to stay connected has many benefits. However, using them to text and check social media while walking in a busy urban environment can pose many dangers.  Through video documentation and strategically placed public posters we aim to raise awareness about the dangers of not paying attention to the surroundings in a bustling urban environment.

Philadelphia has a call center to report local problems. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the local affordance and might not respond due to lack of awareness.  People often express their feelings about problems in their environment through unproductive means which creates stress and frustration. We want to create a better model of dealing with citizen’s frustration that might lead to actual change.  

Taking advantage of this already existing affordance is a good beginning.

Through many interviews, we found various problems the public has with the solar trash compactors; the most popular being the handle. Users found it difficult to use since it requires two hands, is uncleanly, and time consuming. Using data collected from the citizens of Philadelphia, we plan to create awareness about the problem of the handle. This will also act as an invitation to provoke change using the proper channels.

We have all had displeasing encounters with trash on the sidewalk, specifically experiences before trash pickup day. Smell, obstructions, and visual disappeal are some the endemic problems we face with trash on the street. Bringing awareness and developing effective ideas are key to fix this problem. Together, we can make this city cleaner.

As daily public transit users, we have all experienced many different forms of both appropriate and inappropriate behaviors from other users. Loud talking, intrusive luggage, and impolite actions are a few examples. Overall: You most likely have experienced being uncomfortable. Positivity and guidance can only offer more improvement to these public cues. Let’s try to raise awareness by establishing some rules we can all follow!
