Never Meant To Be Easy

You picked up my red lighter and set it back down when you realized what colour it was. You refused to use it, but something sparked nonetheless. That was the moment I knew I’d fall in love with you. It may seem trivial or mundane, but that’s all it took. In a mere instant, just by being who you are, you forever changed the way I see red lighters. You gave them meaning, meaning I know I’ll always associate with you. You showed me in that brief window of time that you were capable of changing everything, of giving all things a new, beautiful meaning. You showed me how desperately I had been aching for that, for you. You picked up my red lighter and ignited the parts of my soul I swore would never know warmth or light again. You set it back down and didn’t even realize that I was already wrapped around your finger. It was just a red lighter, but it was enough to push me over the edge. Free falling. With no parachute and no fear of the impact. Falling, so safely. Falling for you. Falling with you. And it was only a red lighter.

Guilt, in other words, isn’t always wasted. It can keep us from making the same mistake twice.

I’m here to tell you that if you get broken, it’s possible to put yourself back together. I’m here to tell you that if you get lost, it’s possible that a light will come, dancing, on the horizon, to lead you home.

Forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. Give everyone a smile. Spend so much time improving yourself that you have no time left to criticize others. Be too big for worry and too noble for anger.
