Ovando Mountain looms dark against a stormy summer sky, while a blast of late-afternoon light illuminates a few trees and a lone lady mallard duck, just across Montana 200 from the town of Ovando, in the heart of Montana's lush and lovely Blackfoot Valley, between Lincoln and Missoula.

Interstate 90 crosses from Idaho to Montana over the 4,725 foot high Lookout Pass. Though now a modern freeway, this route was once a treacherous, narrow, and twisting road which was a challenge even in perfect weather, let alone when covered by winter's slippery ice.

Known officially as the Clark Fork of the Columbia, and so named for Capt. William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this river has many names. Its source is Silver Bow Creek, then it becomes the Deerlodge River, changes winds up as the Clark Fork. Also, in 1841 the intrepid Jesuit priest, Pierre Jean DeSmet crossed the river near Garrison, Montana, and named it the St. Ignatius.
