So she was "unable to attend" on the 17th, but will be in training today ...👀 and hasn't been seen since the last international game ... 👀 and neither has Jess ... 👀 and Beth is presumably not in Norway anymore ... 👀and a German anon confirmed that children are allowed an excused absence in Germany for weddings ... 👀
They are probably just on vacation after international duty but I'm enjoying our baseless speculation. Another anon pointed out that none of the international players were seen in traning so they probably were given time off.

In fairness they don't need her to be a leader on the pitch, they have an incredibly strong leadership group with players who play that role excellently. What they don't have is players who will consistently score sitters - they have gotten better at it, but they did that last year as well. The Gotham offense can at best be called spurty - they'll score 9 goals in 5 games then struggle for a single one again. If all she does is turn up and score a goal consistently, I think she's a good get.
We just also need a defender. Even a baby defender! Just literally anyone who can close out games so Carter gets some time off sometimes.
Totally! I think that the anon who talked about Sam Kerr's leadership just meant that she shouldn't be a captain for Australia, not that she will be or should be a leader at Gotham (and again, I have no opinion about this, I don't know enough about her). But I agree with you that Gotham is stacked in that regard.
A person who scores consistently would be a dream come true, so I would really love it if Sam joins and becomes that person! It's just that I find it baffling to let Lilly go, leaving us with 6 defenders technically, one of which is out for the season. (Guro and Midge are both listed as forwards on the 'meet the team' section on Gotham's website, so they haven't, officially at least, changed roles).
Sonnett played as a defensive midfielder in one game, didn't she? That worked. But if Tierna and Jess play CB, with Lilly gone there is no LB at all on the roster (other than Guro, but she's not a defender. As long as she doesn't get put into the 'defender' category on the website, I'll continue assuming this is not a longterm plan). If Bru or Mandy comes back, that's the RB sorted. I would also very much prefer for Jess to play CB rather than 'any position where someone is needed', so I hope a (left footed 😅) defender will be signed, even if it's just as a backup in case of injury or fatigue (like the anon above said, someone needs to be there so the defenders we do have don't have to play literally every minute). Sonnett and Jess were both actively dying by the end of last season, and with all of the international duty and extra games Gotham has this year compared to other NWSL clubs, I worry about this.
Yes, I completely agree! And AKB has said she was working on (or had finished getting?) her coaching license, so she could go into coaching as well. And I don't know if it's the kind of license where you can coach a professional team or an amateur team, but I feel like she would really enjoy coaching young goalkeepers or children, so both would be good, lmao.
The same person got back to me about the AKB/Thomas Hitzlsperger-thing, and said that the DFB probably got her e-mail, because they've changed the schedule. Both descriptions are now on the same "all day" event. Which probably just means they will both be there all day.

I think Lilly wanted this - she's from Boston, and I reckon they were prepping for her to go. I do wonder if they have a big name they're targeting? They also now have some money for the Jess and AKB contract renewal (now that they even more desperately need to keep the defenders they have. Especially the defender who is most experienced in LB, CB and RB)
We now know who the (rumoured) big name is: Sam Kerr. I also think that Lilly wanted to leave, but I wonder if she had indicated this when Boston got a team and it just took this long to materialize (and maybe that's why they signed Guro seemingly as a left back, because they knew Lilly would leave) or that her lack of playing time since Guro's signing made her evaluate her options? It's so weird. Lilly is so good, I really hate that she's gone now.

I agree it would be smart to keep Jess and AKB, but the fact that Gotham have four goalkeepers does worry me somewhat; it seems to me that they are preparing for a future without AKB (though she is still their starting goalkeeper if she's uninjured). Simply because of her age, I can't imagine they'll give her a long contract. Don't get me wrong, I think she is amazing, obviously! But Gotham have multiple younger goalkeepers, and I don't see why they would have so many if they plan on keeping AKB another three years or so. I hope they do! But the signings don't make sense to me at all.

According to the stats on nwslsoccer.com, both Jordynn and Esther have scored twice (the only forwards to score), though Khyah, Mak and Dre Kitahata have barely had any minutes. And Dre has played at least some of these minutes as a defender. So we can't really judge their effectiveness, but of the players who have actually gotten minutes, the most effective goalscorer has been (midfielder) Jaedyn Shaw with 4 goals. Lampson has not scored once so far.
So I do see why they would want a more classic striker in the front, especially since Esther has been kind of lacking so far. I feel like she's been much slower than last season. Guro-Sam has the potential to be incredible, but then they would need to put Guro as a left winger (where she belongs) right? And I know she's had some really good crosses into the box so far despite officially playing as a defender, and the defense has been really good with her and Midge in it, but still ... I would rather see Guro play up front.
If Bru and Mandy are indeed ready to come back, I would immediately be less worried, but right now I find the whole thing quite puzzling.
I don't have much of an opinion on Sam Kerr, since the only things I know about her are from that Chelsea documentary, lol. But I guess we'll see if Teagan Wy will have to give up her jersey number (20) if Sam transfers, the way it happened at Chelsea!

What the fuck? I know it's just a rumour for now, but ... just as Gotham starts actually scoring (in the first five games they only scored 2 goals, in the next five games they scored 9!), after their defence has saved their asses millions of times (only conceding 5 goals TOTAL this whole season) they get rid of a defender to buy a striker? If I were Khyah Harper I would ask to be traded as well, because she's not getting ANY minutes at this rate.

She totally would attend as many games as possible, right? Many Gotham players have posted from inside the stadium, but not AKB and Jess. I think it's safe to say AKB will be at the upcoming Germany-game in New York on June 25, since we already know she'll be in town for the German House of Soccer.
But yeah, in summary: we know nothing, it might have already happened, we expect no posts about it when it happens, it might happen at the end of this year, and it is even completely possible that it will actually take place in 2027 and Jess just misspoke when she said "next year" 😂😅

Someone sent me a screenshot of the German House of Soccer schedule (I wasn't sure if you wanted your tumblr-name attached to this, but let me know if you do and I will give credit!) and said "That's a random combination when according to the DFB website the topic is goalkeeping and not pride, which would make more sense with two openly queer athletes", so I looked at the website and it's SO WEIRD.
Here's the schedule. (They also misspelled AKB's name, which they do very often. There is no H in Katrin! But anyway)
Here they have "AKB & Thomas Hitzlsperger" listed twice, but when you click on it, the one on the left, which is labeled "special", is supposedly "all day" and features an unknown "special guest" (no mention of Hitzlsperger even though his name is in the title of the event) and is about goalkeeping:
If you click on the one on the right, it is from 15:00-15:45 and features Thomas Hitzlsperger. His coming out is mentioned, AKB is not. It almost feels like they messed up their titles and AKB and Thomas Hitzlsperger do NOT make a joint appearance?
Because I agree with the person who sent me this completely! It would make sense to talk to them about pride/homosexuality in sports, since Thomas Hitzlsperger is literally the ONLY male German footballer who has ever come out. Do we think the DFB messed up and both of these (former) players simply make an appearance on the same day, which somehow wrongly got turned into a joint appearance on their schedule? Or is he AKB's "special guest" even though he wasn't a goalkeeper?

Berger: Yes, definitely. It's a city where all sorts of people come together. Plus, it's relatively close to Germany, at least compared to the US cities on the West Coast. When you're out and about in New York, you constantly run into Germans – even outside of the World Cup. This city has so much to offer. That's why it's the perfect place for the "German House of Soccer."
DFB.de: Why was it important for you to be an ambassador for the "German House of Soccer"?
Berger: Because I think the idea behind it is fantastic. Football should connect people. And that's exactly what the "German House of Soccer" stands for. Besides, the USA is a totally sports-mad country. We can make football even more relevant there. The "German House of Soccer" brings people from all over the world together. We want to celebrate the sport there. Origin and everything else doesn't matter.
DFB.de: It's not just about bringing people together, but also about connecting sport and culture. How do you see this aspect?
Berger: That's precisely one of the reasons why I've been a huge fan of this project from day one and still am. When I was asked if I could act as an ambassador, I knew immediately that I wanted to do it. I've played football in various countries. Even if the rules are the same, it feels a little different everywhere. People often love football in different ways. At the "German House of Soccer," all these interests and perspectives come together. I'm looking forward to experiencing that.
DFB.de: So you'll be there yourself?
Berger: Of course. I'm not going to miss this opportunity. Our season with Gotham City FC is still ongoing there. But if I have time, I'll stop by the "German House of Soccer" to experience the World Cup.
