GO3 writing - too much attempted fan service
I'm no screenwriter/movie creating person. Still I feel like GO3 should have been a much better outcome than it was, based the abundance they had going in.
Sure. It would be hard to distill 6ish hours down into 90ish minutes. The writers had the benefit of the original 2 movies (plus notes presumably) though. And the book. Plus a written S3 script as a reference.
I feel like they didn't honour this source material though, in 2 ways:
1/ the writers just did not care about Good Omens. Idk who the writers were, if they purportedly liked GO or not - I can't believe they were invested in any way, shape or form beyond a paycheck and credit.
2/ to make up for up the fact that they didn't care about and had no deep knowledge of the source material, and knowing this was going ahead in part due to fan response, they decided to peek into the fandom and skim off the top what they PERCEIVED the fans wanted. (PERCEIVED being yelly because they fucking got it wrong, didn't they).
The finale rehashed what were already known fan obsession points:
Azi moaning over his food and Crowley tempting him into eating and watching
Crowley always rescuing Azi, so Azi finally rescues Crowley back (and again, coz the writers think we're fucking morons, the script pointedly describes what he's doing as he's clearly doing it jfc)
Crowley loving the Bentley and their little 'married argument' about who the Benley belongs to
An outlandish outfit for Crowley in heaven
That godawful half baked Azi apology dance that seemed to have a techno soundtrack this time around.
All these bits (as well as likely others - I genuinely haven't been able to watch the finale more than 1.5 times so may be missing other examples) seem to be slapped into the finale like 'LOOK HERE ARE THE THINGS YOU WANT AND LIKE'.
It's almost like the writers, not caring enough to even actually understand the fandom likes/wants, out of laziness or a misguided desire to try and appeal to the fandom, just ran a bunch of links through chatgpt and asked for 'top 5 things we should stick in GO3 to appease the fans'. With the notable exception of course of any kind of declaration/affection/kiss, which would have been at the top of the fandom list. GO3 appeared dedicated to ensuring Elspeth had no chance of exhuming Buried Gays, with the finale ruthlesslessly ironing out any gayness into straightness - or just plain oblivion. (Don't think of it as dying, think of it as avoiding the rush, Mutt). Side note, I've never really even categorised Azi & Crowley as gay - they're sexless celestial beings after all - but they were 'other' to each other, forbidden, and still found, respected, supported and loved each other despite that. I love that about them, irrespective of plumbing. Nevertheless, S2 was heavy on queer representation even outside of Azi & Crowley, which was wonderful and seemed to set us up for a happy queer ending(s)). Nope. Amazon powers that be: "Pass My Shovel".
So my take on GO3 is that the writing wasn't done with any love or care for the story itself. The writers just didn't care. I feel like the writers tried to appease the fandom and use it as a shortcut to deliver something they thought would tick enough boxes - which ultimately became a script which didn't embody any kind of reverence for the core story as it deviated from it too much into (misinterpreted) fan service.
If they'd just stayed true to the core of GO and completely ignored the 'perceived' fandom wish list, we'd have had wonderful new canon compliant material to gnaw over and dissect and adore - rather than stale bubble and squeak.
(I may be wrong, happy to discuss - this was just how the finale felt to me. Too much 'here you go fans' while ignoring GO lore).
