Using Bitsy an online game maker created by Adam Le Doux, my main idea was to have a simple game set in 2099 New Yearâs Eve (far off in the future). You play as Talus 8 a robot that has access to the company Robo systems. You are free to explore the building as all the humans are out of celebrating the start of the 22nd century. My major decision was to include e-books/ electronic articles as items that the player can pick up through each room. The e-books have information about what is happening in the world at the time. Itâs mostly negative, such as the effects of climate change and the rising sea levels, the extinction of different animals, deforestation and more. It shows that we know about all these issues today, but my story shows how although the world has evolved in a technical term, humanâs lack of empathy and common sense has destroyed the world in the future. You can also interact with other robots (sprites). I was inspired by the blade runner films as it has that bleak dystopian feel to the world with future technologies.
Bitsy is fairly simple to use, so animating the avatar, sprites and items was easy once you know the basics. The main challenge was to make it a short game but a compelling one at the same time, which I think i have mostly achieved as the subject matter is relevant in todayâs world. I also changed the colour of the levels to try and emulate futuristic neon settings, and the robot aesthetic.
Pros: The compelling view point of the story and its setting makes the game more engaging.
Cons: Although the Bitsy editor is simple in design, I havenât fully fulfilled its potential by creating more technical and advanced rooms e.g. different tiles to make it look more realistic. My levels look fairly simplistic. Furthermore I could maybe incorporate a sci fi music track to add to the futuristic feel of the game. This would improve my work if I was to undertake this task again.Â
