I recently watched season 1 of the Mummy Animated Series and...I feel they did poor Jonathan DIRTY. It seems like they took every bad trait he has and amped them up while toning his good ones way down. He's my favourite character in the movies so I feel so bad for the poor thing.

I was so invested in the animated series as a kid, but I agree.

If you watch the trailer for the show, the narrator is like, “AND THE CLUELESS UNCLE JONATHAN.”

Like I get it was probably for comedic relief, but here at Bembridge, we’ve talked a lot about Jonathan being portrayed as this flighty gambler when in reality he is someone who cares deeply about his family, and HAS LITERALLY HELPED SAVED THE WORLD MULTIPLE TIMES. He isn’t clueless.

Hot take: the true Thing We Don't Talk About in the fandom is NOT the third movie - there's tons of "the third movie doesn't exist" and "we don't mention the third movie" - but the song in the end credits of TMR. I have never seen ANYONE mention it, anywhere. It's like it doesn't exist. In fact I've seen TMR dozens of times and I only remember the intro notes, no idea how it goes after that - AND I made a point of listening to it last time. It just won't stay in my head. Spooky shit.

*slides into ask* Jonathan is my favorite fucking character in the Mummy series, and if Tomb of The Dragon Emperor were actually, you know, -good- I would have been down to ship him and Zi Yuan. (Michelle Yeoh is hot, okay?)

Hey, how ya doin’. Welcome to the Jonathan Power Hour.

LITERALLY every single time I watch The Mummy, at the end when Evie and Rick kiss and Jonathan asks the camel for a kiss, I’m like “this is garbage Jonathan deserves someone to love.”

Michelle Yeoh is phenomenal.

Let me paint you a picture. This is kind of leading from the one hot take I got about Zi Yuan and her daughter being archeological bamfs.

In a better TotDE world, Jonathan is out there killing it from his big ass Oasis diamond. Zi Yuan only knows him by his reputation as a “distinguished” Archaeologist (thank you Evie), and part of the team that stopped the last two apocalypses, apocali? whatever. She seeks him out because of some terracotta mummy trouble. What she doesn’t expect is this scoundrel who APPEARS to care only about his successful casino and the next dollar.

He refuses to help her at first, citing that he had enough mummies in one lifetime, but there’s a chase scene. It’s intense. Jonathan gets roped into the drama AGAIN. Enter Rick and Evie who came to see Alex, and also join the fun. Eventually throughout their time together, Jonathan proves to be a great ally, intelligent, and fiercely loyal to his family. Zi Yuan values the latter part greatly, and the two begin to become close.

It goes down, they take turns saving each other (or mostly Zi Yuan saving him, you know how he is lol), and by the end of the adventure, a romance blooms.

The casino becomes a leading institute for Chinese history and archeological studies, and everyone goes home happy.
