Observation had yet to teach Nicholas anything more than this boy's name (Abel) and general demeanor (friendly). But only a moment's observation would have found Nicholas believing some of the world's most prolific serial killers to be friendly and undeserving of any punishment he could dole out. Friendly did not tend to be the be all, end all... ...though the sharing the boy did with another object of Nicholas's observation became cause for mild surprise. And mild surprise was enough surprise for him to wait patiently... stay there, wait patiently... until the party Abel had been talking to left; at which point, he slunk out from the shadows and found himself towering over Abel, almost wishing he had the ability to be less... imposing (one of the few things his counterpart did far better than himself). In lieu of being able to come across as instantly well-meaning, he slowly lowered a hand -- fingers long, fingernails jagged, perhaps not as inviting as he liked to think it was -- onto the boy's shoulder. "Who is it that murdered you, mein junge?"

“Are you lost?” They muse, hands stuffed in their pockets as they shifted their weight between heels. Their usual cheery tone now dampened by the strain in their voice from several sleepless nights. Maki hadn’t gone out in a while now, much too busy with her apparent pity party for one following the disappearance of everything they had ever hoped for. “Or are you lookin’ for something?” He adds, a subtle hint of hope in his tone. Maybe helping out a stranger would be a good distraction.

Nicholas hummed, eyes flitting from one book to the other... then back... then back again... He combed his memory, did his best to place the titles -- he'd certainly read at least one of them in his day! but there were plenty of things that escaped him, media consumption being the lease of his worried -- and came up empty. "What I like to do when I can't make up my mind is eenie-meenie-miney-moe. But if you really want it to work, you have to hand them to me and close your eyes!" Everyone knows that, if you're in between two, the one you don't start out on will be the one you pick! Nicholas could shuffle them around for her, keep her in the blind of the changes he'd made, make the choice much more randomized!

something small clatters against the tabletop, a collection of small, white fragments spreading over the scratched surface, briefly forgotten. seemingly unbothered by [ . . . ]'s presence, opal remains entrenched in the scrap of paper on the table, frantic scribbling, and soft mutters filling the otherwise empty silence. after a few more moments of ignoring their presence, her head lifts, blue hues narrowing. ❝ hey. ❞ a beat, brief and fleeting. ❝ can i see the inside of your mouth? ❞

He knew this one -- or, at least, his purer counterpart did; alas, Sector Eight was a breeding ground for those unlike his purer counterpart. He sensed rot in this one, something to be tamed... and he would use this chance interaction to deem just how worthy she was of mercy. "Perhaps," he drawled, a German accent that Nicholas did not possess (and would have no reason to) present upon his prehensile tongue. It was an innocent, if somewhat odd, request -- the perfect way to unravel it all. "If you first tell me what it is you seek from it."
