sick and tired of being short and nonthreatening i need a shadow that lengthens and grows horns & claws and a voice that drops several octaves to a rumbling growl when i’m mad so i finally get the appropriately intimidated reactions i deserve
@novamortem:
he still hasn’t forgiven her for the catnip. …( she’s also not offered anything that might sound even vaguely like an apology for entertaining herself at his expense, but that’s rather by the by )… however – rather than letting a petty grudge ( composed mostly from his own embarrassment ) slam in yet another wedge ( and don’t they just have enough of those between them right now? ), jericho decides to let that one go…
…for now.
he does squint slightly as the words tumble out - trying to make sense of the chaos and multidirectional conversation that seemed to be a staple for bree… a snort as she mentions the obnoxious cat. pain in the arse that it had been since it’s arrival and not so much in the way of ‘helpful’. ( …and… he doesn’t ‘brood’… there’s almost a protest about that on his lips ( even if he’s completely wrong ), ) but it dies in the wake of her revelation. it’s only when she reaches the last part - stating ‘evil twin’, that he does offer a small nod, turning fully and giving her his full attention.
❝ uhuh… that’ll be the one. shoes…? ❞
he’s not so surprised as those words just keep throwing curveball after curveball… but one brow does lift gracefully into a questioning arc -
❝ she threatened you? ❞
❝ wow, that’s… quite the persuasive tactic. you okay? ❞
❝ what else… were there promises of power? or perhaps she told you to leave? because that seems to be a pretty common thread. they…. they…. the other, ‘us’ - if that’s what they actually are - seem to be pretty keen on getting everyone of us to pick one or the other… ❞
“Yeah, yeah I’m fine. She didn’t start off threatening. Just sort of went that way when I wasn’t buying what she was selling.”
Bree took a deep breath, moving forward to stand beside Aeron and lean against the edge of the roof. There was still part of her that wanted to avoid him after the whole catnip thing, but that was childish; they needed to be working together not behaving like children. She glanced up through her eyelashes at him, trying to read his expression and failing.
“She said a lot of things. Started off by telling me you never get over the whole, uh, catnip incident -- which, by the way, was an honest mistake. I sort of forgot that you were a cat and I figured if Billy found it instead of Balfour that it’d be fine. So...you know... I’m, uh, sorry...about that...you were really cute though if that helps. Probably doesn’t. Anyway.” She cleared her throat, shifting awkwardly and turning to look out over the yard instead of at him.
“But, yeah. There was a request to go join her in Bermuda. A promise of untold power if I wanted it. Told me I should be in charge, which...please, that’s a disaster waiting to happen. Said that I could have access to all the powers of the entire council if I was willing to risk destroying everyone in the process. Also said that Nadine is minutes away from going nuclear. When I wasn’t reacting how she expected she told me I was tame like a puppy and ‘maybe she should take my place’ because she was ‘out of her own friends to drown’ or something like that. So...that was fun. What did yours say?”

His fingers ran through his hair, which felt sticky from the remnants of soot. Daniel didn’t plan to work out earlier than his normal schedule, however, battling a fire proved to be enough of a fitness regime. While Daniel looked exhausted, his other hand carried an empty fire extinguisher. The job was done ; the training room wasn’t burned to ashes ( even if his appearance suggested otherwise ).
“Fire is out,” he announced. “Any other disaster I missed?”
“Library flooded for a bit but I think that’s taken care of as well.” Bree didn’t look as rough as Dan did, but then she hadn’t exactly been directly involved in any one thing. She was not a leader, despite what her evil twin said (and honestly that bitch trying to push her toward it was almost more reason to avoid it.) There was something bigger going on, though. Lani’s vision, then then simultaneous disasters striking the Council could not be a coincidence.
“You know none of us did these things, right? It’s someone fucking with the ley line to fuck with us? Everyone realizes that, yeah?”

@theninthcard:
we’re living in the currents you create when & where: july 4th, 9:14pm, pool open
Only one thing had made sense to her all day, and that was Balfour’s snarled denouncement of the Feiyan they had all seen at the meeting. Lailani had spent the rest of the afternoon restlessly drifting from place to place, her fingers twisting her sleeves to bits as it played out again and again in her mind. Even at their worst, Feiyan had never outright told any of the Councilors they were failures… It just wasn’t her style.
Though it had been months since her disappearance, and they had accomplished… nothing. Couldn’t even decide on a new leader, if any, an issue which grew more worrying by the moment now that it was apparent someone - something? - was out there trying too tempt them all to… The Ancients only knew what.
She wound up beside the pool, thinking the gentle sloshing of the water would calm her nerves. Just the opposite; every errant sound or reflection off the ripples made her teeth chatter. She stayed anyway. Footsteps nearby nearly sent her crashing into the water. She yanked her sweater tighter around herself, turning to greet the newcomer, desperately hoping the only reflection she would see in this room was the jumbled one in the water.
“Just me,” Bree said, offering a hopefully reassuring smile. “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.”
She settled down next to Lailani with a soft sigh, leaning forward with elbows on her knees. Since Feiyan had disappeared things had been...crazy, to say the least, and Bree was doing her best to keep a brave face, but it was getting more and more difficult. Having Feiyan look right at her, or a projection of her anyway, and tell her she was failing felt like a knife sliding between her ribs. Never had she heard those words from The World before, even when she was at her worst. That partially made her wonder if it was really Fei -- Balfour didn’t seem to think so, but then maybe he was just referring to the fact that it was an astral projection and not her physical body. Or maybe it was more magic fucking with them. How would she know?
Looking back over at the other councilor she could feel the strain pouring off of her almost like a wave hitting the beach. “You holding up okay, Lani? I mean....with everything? I know it’s a lot. And people probably want your guidance about now, which only makes it more. But how are you holding up?”
@novamortem:
Location: Lair - The roof With: OPEN STARTER - @ anyone tw: firearms/gun
he’s made his way up to the roof of the lair… a vantage point from which to keep watch ( for that damned evasive crow ). though the message from the shade had been clear - it wasn’t necessarily ‘outward’ that he should be looking. whatever was coming their way wouldn’t corrupt from beyond, but from within…
…in which they were suddenly their own worst enemy. not all. not each individual… but some… the potential to succumb to temptation. to whispered promises - or lies… to glean a glimpse of things that could be - corrupt power - if they just took that step over an invisible, intangible line.
he’s still looking for the crow. wondering if it was still there - trapped in a hellish limbo of a torn and blooded future, but thrown into the past to watch as mistakes were repeated. perhaps he’d been angry, frustrated, perhaps throwing the lamp at the damn thing ( at the haunted version of himself ) might have been the best option. but he hadn’t been able to bring himself to violence toward those hollow eyes… the eyes of death who had – once again – held the bodies of the dying and the dead… who was so familiar with that violence that he’d used it… in ways he can barely fathom right now.
however. there is something in his possession currently that he hasn’t picked up for… some time. something he’d sorely hoped never to pick up again. a solution to a problem that hadn’t presented yet. a scythe in the hand of the reaper that walked among them. – a gun. and while the soldier in him is both careful and competent… the human in him knows the complexity of physical ease and moral difficulty that pulling a trigger presents. does he - once again - steep his hands in blood so they don’t have to…?
after all. magic was one thing. but those who wielded it were still distinctly human and very, very mortal.
it’s… just in case. right? it’s a precaution. it’s entirely possible that he’s playing into the self same purported ‘future’ that his crow had foretold… by picking this up, events are set into motion - he’s already making choices that… he doesn’t want to have to make.
the problem is – he doesn’t quite know who he’s trying to protect… from who… or… what.
so for now - the gun idles in his hand ( with no actual intent, it’s simply… there ) as he tries to think his way through an impossible fog of unknowns. safety on. but loaded, oiled, ready…
just. in. case.
it’s not until he hears a scuff behind him that he’s half turning, a question already in his eyes, no hesitation on his lips… always to the point.
❝ what did you see? ❞
because, after lani’s vision… and then his own ‘encounter’, with everyone jumping at shadows… he’s damn sure he’s not the only one…
The encounter with her double didn’t shake her as much as it probably should have. It was disconcerting, to say the least, but it felt like an elaborate prank. It wasn’t her, the other entity was too different, too...bizarre. And it didn’t know the lyrics to Abba. One of Bree’s earliest memories was driving to the beach in her dad’s pickup, surfboards hanging out the back, windows down singing along to The Album or Waterloo or any of their other hits. There was other music as well, but Abba was a staple.
Somehow all the councilors needed to sit down and talk about what happened, figure out what the hell was going on, but she had no idea how to make that happen. So she was sort of waiting for someone else to initiate. Someone with more authority and a chance of being listened to.
In the meantime, she wandered. Maybe one on one she’d have a chance to talk to a few folks and as a group, they could figure out the next steps. That was how she found herself on the roof. With Aeron. And a gun. Maybe her double was right about him never really getting over the catnip thing...
“What?” she asked, her eyes darting up to his face. “What do you mean, what did I see? Just now? I saw you looking extra broody, which is sort of an accomplishment, so well done. Uh... I saw Azra trying to befriend Balfour. Again. I saw a really cute pair of shoes on my evil twin and she didn’t even have the decency to leave them after threatening me. I’m guessing that’s the one you’re most interested in?”

nyc pride / june 30th / open
he’d just come from the guitar lesson with rose and was now shifting from foot to foot in times square, watching as the closing ceremony began. music was already blaring from all the speakers and chaos bloomed in multi-colour across the space.
the energy was thrumming through his rib cage as he went to grab onto their hands, spinning into their grip and letting the rainbow flag flutter like a cape behind him. glitter shimmered under his black mesh crop top and fishnet tights. his high-waist iridescent skirt twirled with him, before he stumbled to a stop.
“ let’s enjoy the party while we can! “
This was exactly the type of chaos Bree needed. No evil twins running around. No magical disruptions. No end of the world type burdens. Just rainbows and glitter and unicorns. She grinned, tapping Mitch’s nose with the end of a sparkly silver wand. Bree, of course, was dressed in a rainbow-colored ruffly skirt and top, complete with a unicorn horn, fairy wings, and enough glitter that she felt like she could rival a disco ball if needed.
“You’re speaking my language, dear. This is perfect and exactly what I needed and you’re my favorite human being today.”
@suvaris:
Azra leaned back in the water slightly, then ran her hands through her hair to gather it all behind her shoulders before she righted herself and continued to listen. Bree’s idea was better than hers, which simply included mild confusion and trial-and-error, where as this had the potential to actually do something, even if it meant exhausting both of them by the time they finished. She nodded in agreement, her lips drawn in a line as she thought. Not to mention, someone or something did this, and where it would take their combined efforts and a monumental amount of energy to do it, there had been no local reports of any strange happenings until those of the church Lani and Rose currently investigated.
“It seems like the best plan we’ve got, honestly. Short of trying to like… haul a bunch of other councilors down here, it’s probably all we can do. Sort of wish Nadine was here though… I bet she’d make this a lot easier,” she mused with a frown. She should have stopped in to visit Rose before doing this–even summoning would perhaps make this task easier.
“Okay, lets do this before I chicken out,” she said with a brittle laugh, then pushed off the platform Bree maintained below her feet and drifted backwards a short distance before she vanished below the water again. Once more, the bubble of air around her nose and mouth appeared and she began to propel herself towards the wreckage that interrupted the leyline.
As anticipated, dragging the wreckage out of the seafloor took a titanic amount of exertion, and so when Azra finally dragged herself to shore, she barely made it out of the waves before she dropped herself onto the wet sand, too exhausted to go any further. She watched as waves rushed towards her, reaching her knees before they receded again, then lifted her head to see how Bree fared. “I never want to move again,” she complained with a loud sigh.
“Nadine’s power would probably make things easier, but we’ll have to make do with just us for now. If we can’t get it we can come back with reinforcements,” Bree reasoned. She flashed a reassuring smile at Azra, or at least she hoped it was reassuring. This was her domain, she was supposed to be confident and know what to do, right?
Azra dove back into the water and Bree watched for a second. “Ancients...if you’re out there and real and stuff, maybe give us a hand? This feels dumb. Ok, bye.” She let the platform of water drop and swam back down toward the magical disruption.
By the time they were finished, Bree almost felt ready to leave the water and be landlocked again for a little while. Her muscles felt like rubber and even the weakened waves felt strong enough to knock her over. The ocean seemed mildly sympathetic, which was more than she expected, but perhaps it was grateful for the work they’d done. She collapsed on the sand and rolled onto her back, breathing heavily. “No. No moving. Not for at least a week,” she agreed. “You did great. I can’t believe that worked. Holy shit. That hurt. I vote we take a nap. Yeah? Then we can figure out what the heck to do with that thing and then we can get pizza. Maybe Rose can just summon us home while we sleep.”

@suvaris:
As the pair of them burst through the surface, Azra pushed her hair out of her face and took a couple of deep gulps of air. Despite the fact that water manipulation allowed her to breathe underwater to an extent, doing so for an extended period of time made her uncomfortable. When she felt water solidify under her feet, she gave Bree an appreciative look as she relaxed somewhat.
“Was it a boat maybe? I mean, like, I big boat, obviously, but… what the hell else could do that?” she said. The discovery of what interrupted the leyline created more questions than it did answering them. The size of the debris itself would require both Azra and Bree to work in tandem using Strength’s hydrokinesis, and yet someone or something had done this on their own. Or, potentially, there was a group that acted against them. Neither option had a positive outcome. She thought perhaps she could text Mitch and have her zip her home for a minute so she could borrow Nadine’s telekinesis, but the idea of stacking magic–maintaining hydrokinesis while using telekinesis to move the debris–quickly sounded more exhausting than she could handle.
“Maybe we can at least pull it out of the leyline and… I dunno?” With one hand she gestured, her palm slapping the surface briefly as she did so, sending a small splash of water into the air between them. “Get it closer to shore. Then we can convince Rose to summon it to the lair once we get back. Would it be worthwhile to look at it once it’s out of the water? Or do you think it’s just… like… normal metal? We’ve gotta get it out of the leyline, though. If it is what screwed up our powers, the longer we leave it, the worse things could get.”
“I don’t know, honestly,” she said, breathing deeply. “I suppose it could have been parts of a boat, twisted to make it like....a bit ass knife?” Bree frowned thoughtfully, chewing on her lip. “I think maybe I can create a sort of reverse whirlpool that will at least pull it out of the leyline and then maybe push it to shore? I brought a shit ton of garbage bags, too, I always do so that I can have the water sort of bring me all the things that don’t belong in the vicinity and do a quick clean up, but obviously, that’s not gonna fit in a trash bag. And I’m not sure I’m going to have the energy to do a beach clean up after getting that out. It’ll be the biggest thing I’ve ever pulled out of the water.”
The fact that someone had been able to stab the huge chunk of metal and glass into the ocean floor made her feel uncomfortable -- it was going to take her and Azra working in tandem to get it out but someone had managed to get it there with seemingly no problems at all. Then again, it was always easier to break things than to put them back together so maybe she was giving this asshole too much credit.
She took another deep breath, trying to think strategically even though that wasn’t her strong suit. “Okay, if I create the whirlpool and you sort of use the water to scoop away the sand we should hopefully be able to get it free and then we can send it to the shore together. Just be careful to maintain a safe distance. If it comes out more easily than we expect, I don’t want it to hit either of us. I think I could probably stop that anyway? But be careful. Does that seem like a good plan?”
Something Wicked This Way Comes
When: June 22 Where: By the river Who: Bree & Eerb (Please forgive the lack of editing on this, I’ll update it at a later date I just wanted to get it posted for now)
The river is placid today, its surface calmer than usual and sparkling under the midday sun. Birds chirp in the trees on the island’s shoreline. Summer heat settles over everything, blanketing it in humidity that manages to be almost pleasant, if still a little stifling. The current begins to pick up, gradually at first, but then the river starts to rush. Waves form on its surface. A figure comes skating through them, light bouncing off of her sun-bleached hair. Her feet are bare, floating upon water which bends perfectly to her whims. Her grin is wild and her laughter unbridled; seaweed strands are tangled up in her hair, and a fine film of salt coats her suntanned skin wherever it hasn’t recently been splashed. Despite all the little details, Bree may as well be looking into the flat waters of a clear lake, or a perfectly clean mirror - this person is a perfect reflection of her. When she opens her mouth to speak, even her accent is the same. “You look like you could be having a lot more fun right now.”
Bree blinks at the alternate version of herself -- part of her had been preparing for this since the others had their encounters, but it was still weird. Really weird. "Riiiight. Sure, okay. If this is a parent trap type situation and you're here to tell me that your mom has a picture with half of my dad's face and we're twins separated at birth, I'm gonna need a drink."
@suvaris:
Movements spurred now by urgency, Azra wordlessly stood in the surf and followed Bree. Cold water rose to her waist and then her chest, and with one final inhale, she dove into the waves and tailed the other towards the source of the disturbance. The deeper they swam, the more the chill began to bite and darkness pressed closer despite the relative shallowness of the water itself. She manipulated the water to propel her quicker in order to catch Bree before she lost sight of her, and as the pair of them drew nearer, what was once a hint of the unnatural felt more tangible, like she could feel it in her very soul.
When shapes materialized out of the ocean’s natural murk, Azra slowed. Glass and iron violently jutted from the seafloor, intentional and strange and very obviously the epicenter the leyline’s interruption. But what was it, and why was it done? She swam closer as she tried to inspect the debris, a crease forming between her eyebrows as she observed and thought. The Harry Potter-esque bubble around her mouth allowed her considerably more time to investigate than it would have a normal person, but eventually, she’d need to talk to Bree.
After a few minutes trying to decipher the original shape of the glass and metal, she swam to Bree’s side and pointed upwards, her arm pumping a few times for emphasis. They needed to surface to figure this out, and the sooner the better.
Bree stared at the massive chunks of glass and iron stabbing out of the ocean floor and felt a little bit like she’d been stabbed herself. Ley line or no, who would do something like that? Weren’t the oceans polluted enough without adding extra shit? She swam closer, the water aiding them by clearing -- silt and debris fell to the bottom so she could get a good look at the ley line’s disruption, but the response was more sluggish than she was used to. Maybe it was just the size, but Bree had a feeling it had more to do with the ley line.
She looked over when Azra urged her to the surface, hesitating for a moment before nodding and starting to swim up. Her head broke the surface and she took a few breaths of regular air. She used her power to make a sort of platform they could stand on so they didn’t have to tread water while they spoke and wouldn’t tire themselves out before the real work began.
“What the hell is that?” Bree asked, pushing her hair out of her face. “I mean, clearly it’s intentional and we’re lucky this isn’t a big fishing area or anything, no boats hit it. It might be deep enough that that wouldn’t be an issue anyway, I wasn’t really paying attention to that part. But still, what the hell? It’s no accident, obviously. But damn. I think... I think if we work together we can use the water to pull it out or wear away the bottom to where it can be pulled out but then what do we do with it? We can’t just leave it on the shore, right?”

@suvaris:
Even if Bree’s magic had been similar to Eve’s, Azra sort of doubted she would have been able to wield it in the same way. She probably just needed a lot more practice, but flowers and trees and shrubs never talked to her the way they did to Eve, and though she could magically grow or shrink plants when she mimicked the other’s magic, she couldn’t really ask permission before doing so. And the idea that the ocean was so vast, so ancient, that it didn’t really have time for the affairs of humans didn’t put her nerves at ease, either. So Azra simply watched as Bree sank to the sand and allowed the waves to hit her as she began to channel.
After a quick glance up and down the beach to make sure no one watched them intently, Azra sat next to the other and gently touched her bicep. She’d mimicked her power several hours earlier and though she could still feel it at her fingertips, perhaps a quick refresh would help. Dark eyes studied Bree’s posture and she imitated it, then let the magic flood out of her like roots.
Bree was right.
The ocean was massive on a scale Azra couldn’t begin to explain, and the sheer vastness nearly overwhelmed her. Not to mention, it was hard to sense any sort of disturbance when the entire sensation of connecting with the water felt like one endless, churning entity filled with life other than just simply salt water. After a moment, she whined and withdrew her magic. “How do you do this,” she muttered and shifted in the sand. Again, she peered down the expanse of the beach and imagined herself anywhere but here, anywhere but absolutely failing at what she’d been told to do.
After a moment, she tried again, and this time she tried to shut out anything that didn’t feel familiar. Despite the array of different sensations mimicking made her feel, they all had the undercurrent of magic that felt at least somewhat similar. She focused on that memory, straining her copied hydrokinesis for anything with that same signature until… she found it. A quick flash, a ways down to her right–an unnatural twist to something familiar. And then it was gone, just as quickly as she felt it.
“There’s something down there, um, way over–” Her torso twisted to her right as she scanned the waves for anything, but she still only saw blue waves and a level horizon. “I could have sworn…”
How do you do this?
Bree ignored the question, focusing on the magic and the water and trying to understand the somewhat jumbled responses coming at her with each wave. Even if she’d had the capacity to respond right now, she wouldn’t know what to say. It wasn’t an exact science. She didn’t know how to do it, she was just making it up as she went along.
The rhythmic pounding of the waves pulled her into almost a trance-like state; the closest to meditating she’d ever come. It wasn’t restful, exactly, but it was calming. She let her breath sync to the ocean waves, breathing in as a wave broke against her and out as the water receded. It was like a second heartbeat, different than her own but somehow still the same in the ways that mattered. She could feel the pull of the moon’s influence on the tide, feel the shifting of the sandbar a few hundred feet off the coast. The sun sparkled on the water and barely warmed the surface, the depths still cold as death.
And there was something else, pulling against the current, against the natural ebb and flow of the water. Deep, unnatural, unwelcome. Azra piped up again then and Bree nodded without opening her eyes. “I feel it, too. Something... It’s like an assault on the magic, sort of...” her voice trailed off as she concentrated her focus that direction, feeling a deep sense of discomfort in her gut. “Come on.”
Without thinking about it she stood, wading deeper until she could dive into the water. Now that she’d sensed the disturbance in the force, so to speak, she felt compelled to continue on and didn’t wait to see if Azra was going to follow or not. This was her domain, her responsibility. The water assisted her strong strokes, propelling her forward toward the source of its pain. Even if she couldn’t fix it right away, she had to find it, had to understand now that she’d picked up on it.
