Masters of the Universe - 4/10
No amount of glistening muscles or Queen needle drops could save this movie from its script. It never felt sincere, constantly tripping over itself with corny dialogue and just plain embarrassing moments. I got halfway through it and started constantly wondering when it was going to end.
At one point in the beginning, Adam escapes a monster attack because an Amazon truck driver hits it and keeps going. I legit almost walked out right then.
It sucks, don't see it. Unless you're over the age of 40 and don't care about a good story and just want to see He-Man and Skeletor fight.
The only reason it got as high as a 4 is because I'm grading on a curve - I've seen a lot of actually terribly made movies, and the one thing I can say is that it is still a competently made movie. This isn't Plan 9, the script just sucks.
So I SO want to highlight things I think we're good about it. I see a lot of people comparing it to the D&D movie in terms of it being a lighthearted action fantasy for all ages that deserves more love, and you know what, I agree. Even if I *personally* have gripes with the script, there are good parts in it.
The costuming and set design was great. The actors did a fantastic job in every part. The music goes so freaking hard. The jokes - the actual jokes, not laughing at Adam's bumbling at the beginning - are very good. Some of the chromakey might be a bit miss, but that's more due to not lighting the actors to match quite right. The actual cg effects were solid.
I took my 3 cousins to see it today (9-20) and they all really, really liked it. So, you know what, I can forgive MOTU for not being perfect - it's still fun.
