When it comes to show week the SM hands over most responsibilities over to the DSM but they are still working hard to make sure everything is going smoothly, checking in on any mistakes and making sure the company know where to be at what time. These are all important jobs however the main show will fall onto the role of the DSM to call the cues and to get the shows by without any hassle.

An SM is required to be there from day one to the last hour of the get out. They are required to choose their team that they will be working in because it is important that they decide people they will work well with in a pressured environment, especially when it comes to production and show week. The SM is 100% relied on by all crew members, director and cast, they have to be willing to put spare free time into it all and you have to become what I call selfless and not expect much of a personal life outside the show.
on a small scale touring company the SM is expected to be some what a ‘roadie’ and set up the staging and help rig with everything along with all other crew members
A stage manager needs to be level headed, good planners, be able to multi task, keep calm under high pressure and technically minded helps!
The SM is in charge of making sure the Health and safety talk happens! so all the company know what to do and not what to do, where to go during a fire and general healthy and safety for the theatre. It could well change for every theatre if the company is touring because they will all have different rules e.g. drinks on stage.

Work experience with 'Flare Path' at Exeter Northcott theatre. I shadowed the DSM and tech ASM for two shows. The DSM ran through with me how a touring company works, with how they use their own sound equipment over what is in the theatres already. We covered wages and how the get in and get ours all work. The DSM spoke me through how all the cues worked and allowed me to call a few! This was great but I didn't want to risk messing up the show so quickly handed back to the DSM! It amazed me how well the DSM learnt the prompt book, she barely had to look at it once! She just knew the show off by heart. The ASM talked me through and allowed me to help set up the prop table and how they used burnt sugar to make the beer effect. This makes a cheap alternative to flat coke or beer. The ASM for this show didn't have a lot to do because there weren't many cast or crew so therefore they all learnt where to find everything anyway. Overall it as a as great experience and I'm so happy they asked me back after shadowing with the same company on the show 'Birdsong' in London!!

What do they do during rehearsal?
Liaises between the production team and director, making sure they all understand everyone points of views. They sit in on every rehearsal taking notes for the director, lighting and sound designers. They also make sure that set and props are all coming along equally and no one is dropping behind! They will make decisions when the director isn’t around.
What does a SM do pre-rehearsal:
Before the rehearsals start a SM will liaise with the director to plan rehearsals schedule, they get in touch with the rest of the production team and they find suitable rehearsal places.
