On July 14, 1969, the independent counterculture road drama Easy Rider was released in theaters. Directed by Dennis Hopper, the film starred Hopper and Peter Fonda as two bikers traversing the American Southwest, alongside Jack Nicholson in a breakthrough performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination.
#OnThisDay in 1969, Easy Rider hit theatres and changed the road movie forever.
Opening with Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild," the film followed two bikers chasing freedom across the southern U.S.
Made on a tiny budget, it became a massive hit, earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay, and inspired generations of filmmakers.
Still one of the coolest rides in movie history.
Beloved New Zealand actor Sam Neill has died suddenly aged 78.
Best known for his roles in the 'Jurassic Park' franchise, 'The Piano', 'Peaky Blinders' and 'Event Horizon', Neill passed away in Sydney surrounded by family, who said he remained cancer-free and "passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life".
Damn, we lost another one! RIP Sam Neill, aka Dr. Alan Grant, aka John Trent, aka Merlin, aka a whole lot of other roles.

Jimmy Page β Les Paul Number One
Perhaps the most famous Les Paul ever played.
Jimmy Page's 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard "Number One" originally belonged to Joe Walsh, who sold it to Page for around $500 in the late 1960s.
That single guitar was used to record and perform countless Led Zeppelin classics, becoming one of the most influential electric guitars in history.
From a $500 transactionβ¦
β¦to rock immortality.
Jimmy Page is considered by many to be the greatest guitarist of all time.
July 10 is observed by many Beatles fans as a day to celebrate the band's legacy. The date recalls July 10, 1964, when The Beatles returned to Liverpool during the height of Beatlemania for the hometown premiere of A Hard Day's Night, following a series of international successes. Although no official International Beatles Day has been formally established, July 10 remains one of several dates embraced by fans to honor the band's enduring influence on music and popular culture.
On July 8, 1973, Led Zeppelin's fifth studio album, Houses of the Holy, reached number one on the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The album remained on the US charts for a total of 39 weeks.
Houses of the Holy marked a turning point for the band. Instead of their usual dark and heavy blues-rock, they incorporated brighter guitar tones and experimented with new genres such as reggae and funk.

Bonnie has been in the hospital in Portugal (where she has a home) for a few months now. She went in for an intestinal surgery that went very wrong. She had recently come out of a coma and passed away (quite unexpectedly) last night (7/9).
RIP Bonnie Tyler, whose voice soundtracked so many Gen-X dances and at least one lifelong fear of slow songs in school gyms.

Remembering the brilliant and distinctively original British actor, comedian and writer on his 92nd birthday.
He was #BOTD on 7/8/1934 and sadly died at 48 on 12/2/1982.
On July 7, 1980, in West Berlin, the greatest drummer of all time, John Bonham, would play his last concert. He left this world, becoming an immortal in the history of rock. Led Zeppelin became an absolute legend. With the death of the greatest drummer in rock history, the Lead Bird of Led Zeppelin ceased to fly. Rest in peace π’ the best drummer of all time, John Henry Bonham.
In 1942, Abbott and Costello were the biggest stars in Hollywood. Their four films that year pulled in $10 million, and no one at the box office out-drew them. Kids across America traded their "Who's on First" lines like baseball cards. Then it all fell apart. In 1956 the IRS came after both men for back taxes, and they had to sell their homes and even the rights to their own films. The team split in early 1957 after 21 years together.
Lou Costello died of a heart attack on March 3, 1959, just three days before his 53rd birthday. Bud Abbott, who lost nearly everything, suffered a series of strokes and was living on $180 a month in Social Security before cancer took him on April 24, 1974. R.I.P. to comedy's greatest duo.
WILD that Mitch McConnell is somehow well enough to have multiple 20 minute conversations discussing intricate diplomatic issues and Senate history, but not well enough to record a 20 second video flashing his constituents a thumbs-up as proof of life.
