Happy 53rd to this GREAT album. All politics aside, Lynyrd Skynyrd has some excellent songs and as a man (especially a now 56 year old man), I can’t help but get a little choked up every single time I hear “Free Bird” or “Simple Man”. By far the coolest thing I’ve ever seen at a wedding was when the groom and his mother danced to “Simple Man” for the mother/son dance. The Beatles’ “Let It Be” was the song that my mother & I danced to at my wedding but “Simple Man” was the better choice for sure

On August 13, 1973, Lynyrd Skynyrd released Pronounced ’Lĕh-’nérd ’Skin-’nérd — and introduced themselves with an album loaded with songs that would become part of the foundation of Southern rock.

No greatest-hits collection. No years of cherry-picking.

At the height of their fame, Led Zeppelin came to Japan on tour. They visited Hiroshima and donated ¥7 million to the city, in memory of the victims of the atomic bombing.

Four young musicians, traveling the world with the sound of rock ’n’ roll, stopped in a city that carried the memory of a war that had ended only 26 years earlier.

For a moment, the history of rock, the memory of Hiroshima, and the human cost of war intersected.

Music can cross borders. So can memory.

#OTD in 1982, The Wall the movie, directed by Alan William Parker, whose screenplay was written by Roger Waters , and with animated sequences created by illustrator Gerald Scarfe and Roger, was released in the United Kingdom and in the US in limited exhibition and despite having been shown in only one theater in its opening weekend.

Drummer Sandy West and guitarist Joan Jett formed the first ever all female heavy rock band after being introduced by producer Kim Fowley. The Runaways released four studio albums, among its best known songs: ‘Cherry Bomb’, ‘Queen’s of Noise’ and a cover of the Velvet Underground’s ‘Rock n Roll’.

Karac Pendragon, the second child and first son of Robert and Maureen Plant, was born on April 20, 1972.

Karac died of a stomach infection on July 26, 1977, at the age of 5. At the time, Plant was touring the United States with Led Zeppelin. The band immediately canceled their concerts following Karac's death, and Plant returned to England to be with his wife and daughter.
