Sometimes you catch glimpses of familiar faces

People who belong to an unknown Before Steps that must have echoed each other Shoulders you must have held

Smiles that you must have shared Fingers that you must have intertwined Eyes that must have met (even if just for a moment)

But your heart should not feel so drawn to a stranger And that connection feels oddly, painfully nostalgic.

Sometimes you catch glimpses of familiar faces

and you remind yourself  

“it’s only in my head”

It had been years, maybe decades, since Marius had opened that suitcase. He had used it to move from his Grandfathers’ on his own and so forth, and then he had left it at Courfeyrac’s for a while… then the Insurrection came to be and with that Marius had been encountered with a sad epilogue.  His life had moved on, though: he had married Cosette, the love of his life, the light of his eyes, his Hope and his Strenght. 2 They were happy, and he had tried to forget his sorrow, his grief. He had woken up in tears, drops of cold sweat running down his shoulders, a scream trapped in his throat.

But that day something feels different, maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s the fact that it’s June, and in a few days it’ll be the anniversary of his friends– No, he still can’t wrap his head around what happened… So he opens that suitcase, law books, notes never again seen, a couple shirts he’s not worn in years… and then, tucked into a corner, neatly folded, a yellowed piece of paper… He doesn’t remember putting that there, he didn’t forget, his heart is racing too fast for it to be a simple piece of paper Marius’ fingers, slow and trembling, unfold the sheet.

“Ne nous oblie pas” it reads, and above that a photograph. It was taken hours before the insurrection began, hours before every person in that picture lost their smile forever. “Don’t forget us” they are asking him, smiling fondly, looking at the camera. They must have asked Gavroche to put that there, they would have all been to busy to run away from the Barricade and come back in time to meet their Fate…
