Barriss couldn’t help but burst out laughing at that ham-fisted attempt at sounding suave -- well, it was true that every attempt Keith made at sounding suave was ham-fisted. Maybe that’s what made it so funny, even endearing?

She was forced to stop. Wasn’t that...wasn’t that exactly what she did, exactly why she was arrested, sentenced to death? For an act of terror, for the sin she’d committed. It...it hadn’t been something she thought she could do, and yet...and yet...

“-No. I do not think this sunset is beautiful at all.” Ai stood still, watching the sun slowly ease it’s way down between the skyscrapers, creating long, claw like shadows that crept towards them.

Ai had no place to speak. Really, it just came out, tumbling like cherries from a dropped basket. She had heard the woman speak, clearly to herself, and could not help but chime in. “This sunset is polluted by the city,” she continued regardless, perhaps also talking to herself. “I am from a place where the twilight lasts for eternity, with nothing to disturb it. That is a sunset worthy of being called beautiful.”

For a while, Barriss just stood, gazing at the gradually-setting sun. Muttering to herself, she realized, had become a bit of a troubling habit for her as of late. The girl’s words seemed to resound within her somehow, and the black-cloaked Jedi quietly looked down.

What of where Barriss was from? The massive planet-city of Coruscant, where the buildings soared far higher than here in the Hive, and the sun would set before the gates of the Jedi Temple each night, pristine, perfect. Barriss had always found the view beautiful, though she would not vocalize such things to her Master...

Compliments were always nice to hear. Especially from cute people. The way this girl, Barriss, looked at her art really made her feel good. She tried to put everything into her art and she was glad it came through. The smile on this girl’s face while looking at her art, that’s what she did it for. That made all the hours of practice, of not feeling original, of not feeling like she was progressing, worth it.

“It’s nice to met you Barriss! My name’s Azalea but you can just call me Lea” She introduced herself right back. She liked how she bowed, it was weird to her which made it special. Lea compared to the girl was incredibly informal.

There was no issue here -- the Mirialan was used to informality. Rarely was an action as humble as a bow performed outside of the influence of the Jedi, especially in a galaxy ravaged by the Clone War. Smiling peacefully, the green-skinned young woman gestured back to the girl’s artwork, her expression slightly apologetic now. “Please, Lea, forgive me for disturbing you. I did not mean to interrupt your work, I simply could not help but comment -- feel free to continue, if you wish.” Of all people, Barriss knew how it felt to be interrupted from work she enjoyed -- the archives were like a second home to her in the temple.

Still, she was hesitant to leave. The more she looked at Azalea’s work, the more it hit her how much she had missed in all her years. Art in action...it was one thing to look upon works of art in records, preserved from ages past, and another to witness its creation, to see what it meant to the artist themselves...

   “Oh!”

Barriss had been out of focus all day, trying to shovel through the proverbial pile of feelings and thoughts which plagued her brain -- and in times like these, she’d always find herself trying to find something to meditate on. It happened to be an oddly warm and sunny day for the season, so the Mirialan had brought out a small rosebush to take in some sun, when she caught a glimpse of a familiar figure out of the corner of her eye.

The Force was with Barriss, and right now, all she knew was that something valuable, more valuable than she would ever understand...was gone.

In this season for giving gifts and spending time with loved ones, a season unfamiliar to a Jedi so used to the rejection of such things -- the rejection of passions and personal love for the greater good. So on this day when people were reveling in the afterglow of a warm day filled with affection, Barriss Offee simply sat alone on a bench in the park, seemingly unaffected by the cold.

She’d received no gifts -- nor had she given any out. It was no sign of detachment or scorn; she simply had nobody so close to her that was worth giving anything to.
