A follow up on that vague post/rant about racism in the fandom

Ok moving on to my rant

Crazy how I wasn’t even gonna drop names and bro decides it’s time to be on bullshit. Apology or not, do you know how crazy it is to bypass being blocked?? And to bypass being blocked by a person who

1) does not want to fucking talk to you

2) you were racist towards.

Not even basic or “normal” ignorance but straight 19th century era racism. Who does that. Tf is going on in Russian schools that they’re teaching PHRENOLOGY

Also notice how when they listed out the “different races” they don’t actually use their phrenology era terminology. They don’t say “Australoid, Caucasoid, Mongoloid” they make sure to say “Australian race, European race, Asian race”. Why not say African/black race? But nah “NEGROID NEGROID NEGROID”

You can really tell that this apology is less to legitimately apologize and more to quell their own guilt and embarrassment.

1) There were many people involved in this conversation, but they’d only ever reached out to @bakiuwu . Repeatedly too. Why? There was a whole group of people and you ain’t ever apologized to no one else?? Not that the apology would ever be worth it.

2) They had followed me sometime after the incident. I did not realize it was them, so I followed back. After I realized this I had blocked them. So………….if I’m the co owner of the server and had the server pinned to my acc ANNNNNDDDD my bio says that I’m black. You had to have realized who I was. Like there’s no way. Weird asf to go follow a person who you were racist to like how hard is it to just stay away

3) they very clearly behave as if they’re entitled/desperate to see people’s content. They literally admitted it to @bakiuwu in the tiktok screenshots. This is very clearly the motivation behind these “apologies” as opposed to being remorseful. Because if someone were truly remorseful, they wouldn’t have dragged the. convo as far as they did

4) I want to remind everyone that this isn’t us flaming a person for being ignorant. In the initial incident they were given MANY chances and MANY explanations. Honestly, they should’ve been kicked immediately. But there is a nuanced conversation to be had about how alt right sentiments are peddled in the education systems. It’s not their fault that they were taught these things at a point in life where they didn’t know better. But it is their fault that they decided to be bull headed as fuck about it when other people were nice enough to correct them.

5) I know I’m focusing really hard on the old screenshots, so this will be the last thing I say about that point in time. But it’s EGREGIOUS how their white ass decided it would be ok to default to the “ah man these silly Americans are dumb and sensitive” when a whole gaggle of people from different countries and continents were telling them they were wrong. And then it’s like…the two black people explaining why it’s wrong to call them negroids are dumb and sensitive? Might as well have called us monkeys

So circling back to my main point. I don’t want it to sound like I’m saying you shouldn’t apologize when you wrong someone. Especially if you were in some way bigoted. I think many people need to practice discretion and understand when it’s sensible to reach out and when it is not.

Their behavior, their “apology” (again, I believe it’s wildly insincere but I’ll get to that) is so inappropriate because why are you trying so hard to facilitate contact with people who do not want it.

Sometimes it’s best to apologize. Other times to leave people the fuck alone because you’ve done enough

Literally going out of your way to disregard the boundaries of people you’ve caused issues for shows me that they only really reached out cause it was keeping them up at night. Then it’s like. The person asks who you are and to remind them of what you did and you can’t even own up?? They shouldn’t even have had to ask.

Accountability 101 is being able to be immediately honest and transparent even if it causes you embarrassment. Because…..YOU DID IT. And to be like “aw man I’m glad you don’t remember me” like I know I keep saying it but you can tell they’re only reaching out because they’re mortified. Not because they can actually conceptualize just how harmful their behavior was

I hate hate HATE to be the mf that vagueposts about something serious but with the way fandoms have been moving recently when discussing racism…I’m not in the mood to invite klansmen to my doorstep. With that being said tho, this has been on the back of my mind, and I really need to rant about it .

To sum this up the best I can. A little over a year ago, not quite going on two, there was a racism incident in a (now private) Baki server. A Russian artist (their nationality is important, as they used it to justify their behavior) decided it would be appropriate to start a conversation about “blackwashing”. This conversation quickly devolved, as one would expect, and they:

- kept asking why they can’t draw characters of color white

- Began to parrot phrenologist talking points

- said the word “negroid” multiple times

- said the word “negro” multiple times

The conversation mainly went on for as long as they did because they led with the whole “oh I’m foreign, I’m Russian, this is what I’m taught in school and I don’t understand why it’s wrong 🥺🥺🥺” bit, and there was a presumed language barrier, so initially people engaged with them in good faith whilst explaining that the points they were making were antiblack and they needed to change how they spoke/thought about race.

This quickly fell apart because they chose to debate people on if those slurs were slurs, doubled down on the phrenology shit despite being warned, and chose to argue with the black members of said server. (I would know, I was one of them!) They were promptly kicked. They only “apologized” upon their removal. And Despite being blocked, they decided that it would be ok to find and follow those same black artists across platforms because they “still wanted to see their content”.

The whole thing was never brought to public attention because: it happened privately, ended when they were blocked again, and as a BIPOC you lowkey gotta pick and choose what you bring to your doorstep because people lowkey dgaf. And idk it just wasn’t worth it, I don’t like to do the whole “call out post” thing anyways. So please don’t consider this to be that

But idk it’s all just so??? Crazy to me. Insanely crazy, I still think about it from time to time. Because white people just get to be racist and still expect you to engage with them, especially in fandom spaces. They get to say “it was just a phase” or “they didn’t know any better” or in some cases “it was a different time” and move on with their lives. Not having to make any real changes to themselves while black people are still impacted by their actions

I see their posts from time to time. See people interacting with them, because they don’t know— how would they know?? I wonder if it would even be worth it to say something. Personally, I think there’s no expiry on racism….and I’d consider 1-2 years to be very recent. But the truth is a lot of people don’t see it that way if they’re not personally affected. I mean, not the same fandom but look at how people have been reacting to the TADC situation!

Not to mention how people behave when the perpetrator “apologizes”. Like everythings magically ok after that.

Would people even care??? Long ass rant but what do y’all think. I don’t want this to read as “GO HARASS THIS PERSON NOW!!!!”, which is why I’ve omitted their name. I can’t lie I do have a lot of feelings about this because it’s really weird. That whole thing was weird. I’m in a weird spot cuz god forbid I say something and then everyones like:

Yay, so cool! MIND YOU me and starbitez along with others of the server tried being patient (lowkey not me) and tried to lead bro away from that path but nope! @leatherskinn /Sonya doubled down like crazyyyy. The original post was made April 28th. Apparently someone reached out privately on May 8th, to ask who is being talked about. Starbritez sent them screenshots of everything. And idk but it smells like that person may have said something and it got back to @leatherskinn Which would explain them finding this account and dming me may 10. Who knows. I’m just now bringing this up because I didnt see the dm/ follow from them on this account until like 3 days ago (I don't be on this account, I only made it cause my main blog got terminated but I got it back). Now with Yujiro when it comes to who he’s really looks like it’s cleary his father, Yuichiro Hanma. Of course he resembles his mother but……come on,he’s yuichiro twin. Yea Yujiro face isn’t this chilled all the time (very rare) but it’s clear him looking like his father is important. It’s not to take away from their mothers but it’s veryy very clear with Itagaki artwork, Jack and Yujiro look dead on each-other and Yujiro looks dead on Yuichiro. Idk it’s crazy to make this point and you don’t use the manga as evidence.

Yknow I’m not anti anime adaption by any means. I love animation as a medium, and more often than not, anime adaptations serve to enhance the presentation of a story! The Baki anime’s aren’t this though. They’re……………………………wait for it…………………bad

They’re BAD and you truly begin to realize how poor these adaptations are once you pick up the series and actually give it a full read. The anime is like…something you watch when you wanna watch bullshit. And I feel like it creates this barrier that causes people not to look further. Because the series is almost seen as something to not take too seriously? This combination of only really paying attention to the anime adaptations and not really taking the time to…read… is what results in a lot of these half baked posts we see litter the tag (no offense)

Don’t take this as targeting this singular post, because half baked means a lot of things. I’ve seen people:

- Make posts mixing up the characters, or outright mixing up characters from completely separate series (Garouden)

- Saw someone make an Oc that’s Yujiro’s mom?? Making an oc when there is a character that already fills that role tells me you didn’t read

- People seem to think that Diane is like…dead or something

- Characterizing Jack specifically as a rapist in fan work this is a whole can of worms, but I want to highlight that people don’t seem to know/understand that he’s a product of rape

- Thinking sikorsky’s name is “Evans”

- Thinking Kozue cheated on Baki

And so on. Whenever you call someone out for this behavior they’re so quick to cry about accessibility? Like “Ah but the manga isn’t readily available and I can’t afford it!!!” If this is the problem you’ve been having, then boy do I have the solution for you!

It’s ALL on mangadex. Been for years. Actually one of the few series that wasn’t rendered fucking lost media or whatever when mangadex got wiped a couple months back. I’m actually in the middle of a reread myself. It’s good if you pace yourself.

No, it's always "omg she's a girllllll and she’s small and shyyyyy a-and she's dating one of the guysssss" it's like idk it feels weird. Like you make a female oc just for her to be infantilized compared to the men around her? Like “oh look at her be petite and only wear pink blah blah” or “oh she’s a stereotypical bad bitch that don’t take no disrespect” …..even tho she’s still written in a sexist way, cuz her only purpose is to be shipped with one of the guys.

Most are just made to be about the contrast “ow she’s ultra girly and tiny he’s a big buff MAN. Isn’t that different and ground breaking???” I guess 🙄. A lot of these Baki ocs are never written to be worth something within the narrative, just “girl” and that’s it. Who’s whole purpose of creation is “shipping”, aka getting fucked on by whatever Baki character.

It's like said oc is never a character but a....idk the word but hmmm….object. Not even a character but an object for the male characters to react to/ interact with.

Even tho realistically the Baki characters wouldn’t interact with them like that. They wouldn’t gaf. But people end up changing their characterization to pander to this weird misogynistic “big strong man little baby woman” fantasy.

It’s so weird to impose such a traditional and toxic depiction of masculinity when a lot of Baki focuses on deconstructing what’s traditionally masculine. It’s reductive because the characters aren’t written to fit this mold. And it just turns the characters into cookie cutter versions of each other. Like “My oc is Baki’s girlfriend and she’s small so he’s protective and possessive over her”, “My oc is Hanayama’s girlfriend and she’s small so he’s protective and possessive over her”, “My oc is Katsumi’s girlfriend and she’s small so he’s protective and possessive over her.” Like why are we ignoring their individuality just to turn them into the standard “man” archetype?

Most of the guys are shown to be relatively normal when it comes to women (except yujiro) so making a female ocs for the core reason of "owww she a girl and they're all men owwww what will happen"' is so ew. You make a female oc just be a piece of flesh for you to write the male characters lusting for. Having your female character be an incubator for whatever male character you pick.

How is that any different from how women are perceived under the patriarchy ?? Everyone get woke rn

No, Kaoru would not hit on you and hire a random civilian woman as his sexy secretary. No, Katsumi would not bdsm punish you with bloodlust in his eyes.

Ignoring how a lot of relationships with Baki characters realistically would be draining, lacking of affection, and stressful as a regular civilian is insane.

But yeah no all of this is very true and I find it sorta sad. I really like seeing people’s Baki oc’s, because ocs can be so fun and it’s always nice to indulge in other’s writing. But then I’ll look and it’s all just……she’s a girlfriend, she’s a wife, she’s a mother. And that’s all. Minimal depth, I can tell a lot of people create characters with “I wanna play house” in mind rather than “I wanna explore the narrative, I wanna flip it on its head, I want to actually make something”.

And that isn’t to say you can’t write girlfriends, mothers, wives. I feel like there’s actually a LOT of potential and depth to be had with these characters if handled with tact. But they’re just…..not. A doll is all they’re made to be, and it’s really disappointing.

Where are the girls who exist outside of their femininity. Where are the girls who can be feminine, but aren’t reduced to their womanhood. Where are the mothers, wives, and girlfriends, who have their own distinctive personalities and struggles outside of serving a man’s narrative. Where are the girls that are actually written to be PEOPLE rather than just “the girl character that Baki doesn’t have”.

Why does “good writing” and “girl character” have to be two separate things when they can just…coexist. Isn’t it boring to continuously churn out these over played patriarchal tropes? And what gets me is that I see a lot of *women* producing these surface level characters that do nothing but have boobs and stand there. That’s weird

I love the ladies! I think it would be really fun to see more girls in Baki, and I’d love to see people’s takes in what kinda girl can exist in universe, how she’d interact with their wacky world. But sorry I don’t wanna read about how she kisses the boy, thinks about the boy, cries about the boy fighting, has the boy’s baby when that’s the only thing she does.
