“it’s not accurate to the source material” is the laziest critique ever btw. it’s an adaptation, it adapts. would it be BETTER if it adhered to the source material? if so, why? is the original plot in the source material objectively better story telling? or have you just formed an emotional attachment to whatever version you encountered first? are you taking into consideration how the advantages and limitations of the different mediums will necessarily affect the story that CAN or SHOULD be told? how about the creative vision and agency of the person making the adaptation - is that totally inconsequential? if adaptation is only meant to be replication, then wouldn’t the best adaptation be the one where you feed the original text into an AI model and it spits out a word-for-word rendition where all the characters are played by anthropomorphic sexualised fruit? answer me. now.
