as a former escape room host i highly recommend doing an escape room as a first date. its a great way to learn how ppl react under pressure and how well they collaborate with you right off the bat. also more than once ive seen people enter an escape room as a couple and exit broken up LOL its a fantastic litmus test
sorry to broadcast ur tags but this is also a valuable part of the litmus test! it seems like you learned a lot about how this person makes you feel in their social group. they didn't go out of their way to include you, and neither did their friends. therefore you can come to a pretty good conclusion about how you might feel being part of their life outside of an escape room; someone who doesnt include you or your feelings in a game is likely going to do the same in other situations

part of being an adult is figuring out what eveyone else's definition of "going crazy" is. to you it is not sleeping for 60 hours, writing 80k words in one sitting and expiriencing enough anxiety to kill a horse. to beth from accounting its buying a ticket to Columbus, Ohio. and to your friend its consuming so much ketamine you lose all of your posessions and wake up with five broken bones in a ditch somewhere and then proceeding to do it again the next day. to your other friend its writing a letter to their favourite actress about how much they appreciate her work. to your neighbour its laughing loudly in a grocery store whilst in pajamas. maya from uni hears the voice of her dead father making jokes with no punchlines and she considers that to be quite normal - to her going crazy would be hearing her husband instead. your downstairs neighbour will take night walks naked sometimes and claim there is nothing weird about him. there are literally no rules to life and all meaning is in the eye of the beholder.
In case anyone finds it helpful because mobility aids are horrifically expensive and inaccessible…
And for those people who have access to mobility devices but might benefit from a second chair they can abuse without risking expensive damage…
Erik Kondo has made a website, Open Source Innovations, that details plans for DIY wheelchairs. These wheelchairs can be made from common materials like wood, plastic, and pvc. They are lightweight and can be custom fit to the user allowing from the same degree of movement you would get from a custom chair. And they are durable and easily repairable. (he has been stress testing his latest design by dropping it down stairs, dropping it out of a car, launching it across a driveway, and throwing it off a deck). Its 12lbs and I think he said its was in the $200 ish range for parts.
He also is working on cheap, open source, accessible designs for beach chairs, off road chairs, motorized attachments (think smart drive), and so on. Plus he skateboards in his wheelchair. Cool dude, helpful info, pass it on.
It's incredibly sad people have to resort to this, but it's a damn good resource. Use it. Spread awareness. Maybe one day people with physical disabilities won't need DIYs like this. But until then, reblog and share.

What’s it all about?
In & Out follows the story of a man named Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline), an English teacher in a small town, in the week leading up to his wedding. He is finally marrying his fiance Emily (Joan Cusack). The other hot news in this small town is that one of the town’s very own alumni, actor Cameron Drake (Matt Dillon) is up for an Academy Award. The whole town watches with bated breath as Cameron Drake wins the Academy Award. The celebrations are short lived as Cameron Drake mentions Mr. Brackett during his acceptance speech - and cites him as an inspiration, commending him for being gay.
Hijinks ensue, as Howard continually reassures his fiance, his parents, his students, his principal and all the local news stations - he is in fact, not gay. Peter Malloy (Tom Selleck) a more famous newscaster, camps himself out in town and decides to cover the story all the way up to Howard Brackett's wedding day - Will he or won’t he? Tensions rise as Howard becomes more and more frustrated as his students and family alike begin to pick apart his mannerisms, his likes, his dislikes, and his fascination with Barbara Streisand. This story analyzes what it means to be yourself, what it means to be a man, and what it means to be gay in a small American town in the 90s.
Standout Moments
There are some excellent moments in this piece. Every time I sit back to rewatch (typically during pride month) I am pleasantly surprised to find that it is directed by Frank Oz. I think this speaks to the level of story boarding and crafting that has been put into this movie. Each moment tells a complete story. The morning after the Academy Award announcement, we see Howard Brackett as he gets ready for school - he is impeccably dressed, he rides his bike to school (and tucks his suit leg into his sock before getting on the bike). When he arrives the school is surrounded by reporters and Howard has to sneak in a back entrance to try to escape them. This scene has very little dialogue but we see so much about Howard Brackett and his mannerisms from this establishing character moment.
This movie also tells a frustrating story about what it’s like to be gay. His students who previously saw him as a hero, suddenly don’t want to associate with him, they are uncomfortable with him walking into the boys locker room, and the principal (excellently portrayed by Bob Newhart) makes it quite clear to Howard Brackett that if he does not marry Emily, he will no longer be able to teach at the school due to pressure from complaining parents. Peter Malloy (Tom Selleck) consistently finds Howard Brackett when he is at his most frustrated and continues pressing buttons that Howard doesn’t even want to acknowledge exist, let alone be pressed.
Another excellent moment in the movie is Howard’s Bachelor party. He has been questioning his manliness up until this point, now that the whole world seems to think that he’s gay. So when his friends are ready for his Bachelor party with a marathon of Barbara Streisand movies, Howard loses it a little. This moment sticks out to me because they really tailored this bachelor party to what they thought Howard would enjoy - they didn’t go for “Macho Man” type entertainment, because they know what Howard loves. They want to celebrate Howard, and so they don’t go for traditional Bachelor party games or R rated flicks - they are ready with copies of Funny Girl and Yentyl. It also plays on fun tropes about living in a small town - his parents (Debbie Reynolds and Wilford Brimley) consistently show up unannounced, cross paths with him when he is out and about in town, and just generally over-involve themselves in his life and his upcoming wedding.
This movie tells a very interesting story about being accepted for yourself while still being in denial about who you really are. His friends and family aren’t upset that he enjoys musicals, or isn’t a manly man, and they largely accept him for who he is… until it becomes clear that maybe Howard is actually gay. The movie comes to a climax at the wedding of Howard and Emily and the whiplash pacing continues straight up until the end. The kids he taught make a beautiful point about what people are afraid of when a gay man interacts with children - a point we could still learn a lot from today. These are real issues many in the LGBTQIA+ community still face, and not everyone has an academy award winning actor, a supportive family and smart students to take a stand on their behalf.
I think this movie holds up well to the test of time, not leaning on any stereotypes or raunchy moments. When the movie came out, TV Guide noted that it "finally gets discussion about gay people out of the bedroom and into the record store.” which I think sums up the vibe of the movie quite succinctly. Everyone performs well and the all-star cast does a lot to carry the quieter moments of the piece. We get a conclusion to each storyline and I find the ending to be satisfying although critics disagreed on this at the time. All in all, I think the comedic timing, the social commentary, the impeccable casting and the storyline itself make this one that stays on my “rewatch” list. I would watch Kevin Kline come to terms with being gay over and over and still be just as enthralled as I was on the first watch.
