As the two figures drew closer, the shadows veiling them gradually gave way. Leonie's familiar features came into view first, prompting Felix to release a quiet breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding. Relief settled over him, though it failed to chase away the knot lingering in his stomach. The wyvern accompanying her was noticeably larger than most, its imposing silhouette enough to keep him on edge.
It wasn't until he got a proper look at the beast that recognition stirred. It wasn't just any wyvern, it was Claude's. He'd caught sight of the unsightly creature often enough wandering the stables to recognise it on sight, its distinctive appearance impossible to mistake.
Gratitude hardly begins to describe what Felix feels when Leonie eases Claude off his shoulders and helps him back onto his own feet. The weight disappears from his back all at once, bringing blessed relief to muscles that had long since begun protesting beneath the burden. He articulates his fingers, rolls his shoulders, and stretches out his arms and legs in an effort to work the stiffness from his joints.
It's then he notices it. From the corner of his eye, the wyvern is staring at him. Unblinking.
His face immediately twists with suspicion and disgust. He abandons his stretching and cautiously takes a step backward, only for the beast to close the distance just as quickly. Before he can react, a long, wet tongue, rough as sandpaper drags across the length of his cheek.
For one horrifying instant, his mind goes completely blank. His entire body seizes. A violent shudder tears through him as though his soul has briefly abandoned ship. He gags audibly, scrubbing furiously at his face with the heel of his hand, his expression one of absolute revulsion.
"UGH!" The sound escapes him like he's on the verge of retching.
"Get away from me, you stinking beast!" He shoves the wyvern's broad snout away with all the ceremony of someone trying to remove a corpse from their personal space, his glare positively murderous as he continues wiping at his cheek, desperate to erase every trace of the encounter.
Leonie bursts into laughter at his outburst, doubling over just enough to wipe a tear from the corner of her eye before reaching up to affectionately stroke Farangis's scaled muzzle. "Aww, don't listen to him," she coos. "He doesn't mean it."
Felix would beg to differ. He decides the effort of correcting her isn't worth it, choosing instead to put even more distance between himself and the wyvern. He sidesteps behind Sylvain and, more importantly, Sylvain's horse using both man and mount as an entirely shameless shield should the beast decide to corner him again, remaining there until Claude's suggestion reaches his ears.
"Not a chance." The refusal is immediate.
"I like my feet firmly on the ground. Leonie can go with you. His tone leaves no room for negotiation. It wasn’t merely firm, but carried the unmistakable finality of someone who has already made up their mind. No amount of pleading, persuasion, or ridicule was going to convince Felix to willingly climb onto the back of that overgrown lizard.
Before long, the group resumed their journey toward the heart of Derdriu. With Claude astride Farangis and Felix mounted on Leonie's horse, they covered far more ground than they ever could have on foot.
As they left the outskirts of the blast zone behind, the city slowly began to emerge from the haze. Buildings that had escaped the Javelin of Light still stood, their foundations untouched, though nearly every rooftop and windowsill had been dusted in ash and soot carried on the wind. Save for their smoke blackened facades, they remained remarkably intact, a stark contrast to the devastation they'd left behind.
The distant rumble of armored boots and pounding hooves echoed through the streets, causing the group to instinctively slow their pace. Hands drifted closer to weapons, every shadow suddenly worthy of suspicion.
Then, all at once, a flash of pink burst into view.
A soldier followed in toe, hurtling toward them atop a galloping steed. As the distance closed, Felix recognised Hilda in the lead with Ashe riding alongside her. The pair called out their names almost in unison, their voices carrying equal measures of panic and overwhelming relief.
Dimitri halted a few paces away from the group, his battalion coming to a stop behind him as he observed the scene unfolding before him. Hilda immediately rushed toward Claude, throwing herself at him with a mixture of relief and lingering worry, while Ashe exchanged hurried words with Sylvain and Felix. It was only as reassurances were heard that the three were all unharmed and free of any serious injuries did the tension gradually begin to leave Hilda and Ashe’s shoulders.
Dimitri’s attention eventually drifted toward Leonie, and noticed the unusual care she was taking while assisting Claude. His gaze followed her movements before settling on the exposed section of Claude's tibia where fabric had been torn away. His brow furrowed, lips pressing into a thin line of concern.
Something must've happened.
