Sometimes it lasts in love.
But sometimes it hurts instead.
Drake and Liam sat silently on Drakeâs front porch, both looking at the point where the green grass met the endless blue sky, half a bottle of whisky gone before one of them spoke.
âDid you neverâŚâ Drake sighed â⌠never suspect anything? I always thought it was written all over my face.â
Liam nodded a few times weighing in his friendâs words.
âI got a glimpse, a few timesâ he sipped his whiskey. âMostly from her, sometimes she was pretty obvious, all the inside jokes, the way⌠the way she looked at you.â
It was Drakeâs turn to nod.
âAnd you still proposedâ he stated still not looking at the young king.
âI thought it was just a crush, something while I was engaged with Madeleineâ Liamâs voice was above a whisper. Just then Drake noticed how his relationship with Riley had affected their friendship. âWell, in the end she left me and then she left all of us, apparently nothing here was enough for her.â
The commoner ran his hands through his hair.
âI canât stop thinking about her, I need to leave for a while, Liamâ for the first time he held his friendâs gaze.
âOnce we catch The Sons of Earth, you can go, give me a few months, I wouldnât want you in danger abroadâ the king clasped Drakeâs shoulder and a tiny smile grew between them.
Liam watched the ball from his throne after the opening waltz with his wife and watched the smile on Drakeâs face as he approached Kiara.
Itâs scary what a smile can hide.
He knew full well his best friend was doing it just for the show, he hated balls, he hated dancing, and Liam wasnât really sure about his feelings for the Lady of Castelsarreillan. A lot had gone by in five years.
He looked at his queen, him and Olivia had come a long way, joining forces to arrest The Sons of Earth, long nights strategizing became nights with longing kisses, nights spent with intertwined limbs. He was glad that his path led to her, but couldnât be so positive about the path that was throwing Drake and Riley back together.
The king opened the door of his room with a sigh, he was exhausted and in 12 hours would be leaving to the U.S for a meeting. He noticed Olivia sitting by her vanity brushing her long red locks, his insides burning as he approached his wife, rubbing her shoulders.
âWill this be the day that Ares will sleep the whole night?â he asked as Olivia relished in his touch getting up from the vanity.
âI hope so, my kingâ she moved closer to him, already affected by his tone. âSince I wonât have my husband here for the next two weeks.â
âWill you miss me, my queen?â he whispered in her ear, loving how a simple word could arouse her so much.
âOf course I willâ she traced the buttons of his white shirt with her index finger, stopping at his belt.
He swiftly lifted her off the ground, her yelp filling the room as he moved her to the bed.
âNo no noâ she pushed and straddled him right after, slapping the hand trying to untie her robe. âFirst youâre going to promise me a gift.â
âIâll give you anything, my loveâ he tried to sit and meet her lips, but she pushed him back to the mattress.
âThere will be an auction,â she started, her hands working on his buttons making it hard to concentrate. âI want a specific piece, but also, I want you to bring the artist here to paint our royal portrait for Aresâ birthday.â
He struggled a moan as her fingers touched his exposed skin.
âAnything for youâ he brought her hand to his lips and kissed her fingertips. âAnything else, or I can dispose this piece of silk separating me form having you all ways tonight?â
He felt played once he discovered what she had done and after a heat up international call he finally understood what happened all along.
âWe need to fix it, Liam. We are guilty too.â
It would be âmake it or break itâ with those two, he just hoped it wouldnât break too much of them. He saw a distraught Riley leave for the balcony and soon being followed.
He finished swirling Kiara on the dancefloor, the memory of another dance - one from years before- , still fresh in his memory.
âYou look like youâre going to kiss me in front of everybodyâ he heard Kiaraâs challenging voice. âtu vas?â
âOf course not, Kiaraâ he stated matter-of-factly and her smile faltered a bit. âPeople are already talking.â
âLet them talkâ she whispered trying to get closer to him.
âKiara, youâre engagedâ he bowed to her under the applauses of the court, getting a glimpse of chocolate locks flowing through the people. âIf you want to ruin that, fine, but donât count on me to do it.â
âYou already ruined it taking me to your bed.â she whispered holding his arm.
Her stance chanced as an old and boring noble from the Cordonian Foreign Trade Council stopped by and Drake just knew it would be another opportunity for her to try and include him in the conversation.
It was her favorite pastime for the three months they were in this so-called relationship, she took every gathering as an opportunity for him to network with other nobles. Even though he was a honored as a royal hero by Liam after the Homecoming Ball, he was still an outsider and couldnât care less about their opinions on him, but apparently Kiara care too much.
He had a feeling that with her return, things were about to get worse with Kiara.
âWelcome back, Duchessâ
Riley turned around fast to the familiar voice, a well-dressed noble man stared at her by the doors leading to the balcony, she didnât recall his handsomeness from her years back, maybe she didnât see him smile that much at that time.
âItâs a pleasure to see you, Lord Rashadâ she said mechanically curtsying, even after all those years a part of her kept all those courtly etiquette lessons Bertrand forced her to sit back then.
âThereâs no need to such formalities, itâs just Rashadâ he walked a few steps towards her.
âThen itâs just Rileyâ she gave him a half smile.
âThose two put on quite a show, didnât they? I canât help but think about how your return will affect this little game of themâ she caught a hint of malice in his voice.
Riley followed his eyes to where Kiara exchanged pleasantries with another noble as Drake kept a half-amused façade, she could tell he was dying to get out of that conversation.
âI donât know what youâre trying to imply, Rashadâ her answer was harsher than she anticipated before talking.
âKiara is engaged to a noble Englishmanâ Rashad stated and Riley looked puzzled at him, âAnd still, is in the commonerâs bed every time she can. What will your arrival change for them, Duchess?â
She felt like throwing up thinking about them in bed together.
âI was courting Lady Kiara a year ago along with Mr. Porter, she always looked like a woman who cared more about her career than titles. Which left me amazed.â Rashadâs rambling was making Rileyâs head spin. â⌠but as soon as he was back, she was once again pining for him, he tried to push her away, but I guess temptation was too much for the stable boy.â
âDonât call him that.â Riley cut him.
He laughed jeeringly followed by a contempt look.
âPoor girl. You have no idea how much he loathes you, do you?â he shook his head âhe spent the last 16 hours saying you only came back for your money and your title, that you didnât care about Cordonian people when they needed most protection.â
She bit her tongue to fight the tears daring to form, remembering Liam cursing Drake when he saw the paparazzi.
âDonât let this get to you, Rileyâ he tried to touch her shoulder but she recoiled. âShow all of them, it would be amazing to stand tall over these two.â
He sighed at her lack of words.
âIf you change your mindâŚâ he seugged and left back to the ballroom.
Riley grabbed the stone banister with both hands, inhaling deeply to ease the tremors, until something hit her legs.
âMom?â it was a boy in a tuxedo holding her by the legs, he had dark brown hair and brown eyes. âOh sorry. Are you okay, My Lady?â
âOf course, Iâm fineâ Riley tried to smile, squatting to be his height. âJust a little bit cold.â
âDo you want my jacket?â the boy struggled with the sleeves of his jacked and she laughed truly for the first time.
âThereâs no needâ she loved the color of his eyes, reminded her of⌠âWhatâs your name?â
âBarthelemy!â a woman was heard by the door and the boy ran to her. âGo inside to find your father.â
Riley got up from the ground to face the disgust expression of the very pregnant woman.
âWhat are you doing here, Riley?â she spat. âWant to finish fucking up my brotherâs life?â
âSavannahâŚâ Riley twisted her fingers sighing.
âItâs Duchess of Ramsford to you, nowâ she clenched her jaw and Riley felt the anger boiling inside her.
âIâm sorry, Your Graceâ Riley rolled her eyes. âI thought maybe you, from all people, would understand the stakes od leaving. Where was this worry when you left him without a word more than six years ago?â
âDonât you dare throw it back to meâ Savannah raised her voice, âI had my reasons to leave! You broke my brotherâ
âDidnât we all have our reasons? As I remember he was pretty much fucked up when you left him without a single word, at least I had the guts to make him hate me!â Riley felt her cheeks getting redder by the minute.
âWhatâs going on here?â Bertrand stated, followed by Maxwell, Liam and Drake.
âYou wanna talk about guts, Riley?â Savannah was screaming by the last word. âMy brother almost died trying to protect you and you were a fucking coward who left.â
Drake held Savannahâs shoulders, without sparing Riley a look. The young Duchess looked at Liam with eyes full of tears, fuck all that.
âCowardice didnât make me leaveâ Rileyâs voice was low, sickened. âQueen Regina did.â
For the first time, after five years, those onyx eyes met the pure blue of hers.
âGo back telling everyone Iâm here for the money and the fame, Drakeâ the corners of her mouth twisted downward. âI donât give a fuck anymore.â
She left with the shred of dignity that was left, before a single tear streamed down her cheek.
