This is actually so real
whenever people are like "christianity itself isn't the problem, it's just the institution of the church that went wrong somewhere!" i'm just like. i understand where you're coming from, i truly do, but it's just so plainly untrue. i don't hate christianity because of the church's wrongdoings, i hate christianity because it glorifies suffering and it's patriarchal bullshit. because the idea of some almighty daddy in the sky controlling everything and having some fucked up plan for my soul that requires my misery is literally the most horrible thought i could ever imagine and i will never understand how anyone could possibly be comforted by that horror scenario. and of course a belief like that would lead to a rotten church, because the foundation itself is inherently rotten. there is no good form of christianity because christianity itself is at its core a tool to facilitate suffering and oppression.
truly the idea of "this scene is (un-)necessary to the story" is such a fundamentally uncurious and anti-art way of engaging with fiction. the story itself is unnecessary, in the sense that all art is unnecessary, because art is not a fucking optimization problem. that's the beauty of it
also there is no theory of “necessary” and “unnecessary” scenes that is not culturally conditioned and a reflection of specific societal biases. modern Anglophone readers of the Iliad tend to find the Catalogue of Ships and the Doloneia and Achilles fighting the Scamander and most of the violence and killing in the poem unnecessary but an Iliad that removes them and telescopes the journey from Book 1 to Book 24 is not the Iliad in any meaningful way.

i think this captures the defining pathology of the collective social media psyche right now. we are in the thrall of people who are wantonly cruel but who also demand to be coddled at all times in every way
normal way to think about making art
a lot of people don’t know that diffusing your hair takes a lifetime. many people die with their hair still wet
no one's actually a cis woman they're just faking it for attention

ever since i was a little girl i’ve experienced an oppressive sense of spiritual ennui when confronted with aesthetic ugliness. the strip malls of new jersey used to make me physically ill
