Nanami's humorous "filler" episodes remind me a lot of the role of a Shakespearean fool. They're there to relieve the tension of otherwise very intense and dramatic episodes (e.g. the cow episode appearing in the middle of the Black Rose arc starting to get serious), but these episodes also exist to sneak in important ideas throughout the rest of the show -- sometimes as a preview, sometimes as a fully realized idea. From an idealized "big brother" as an "ideal man", to her fear of being consumed and forgotten while she's being left in self-aggrandizing ignorance to transform into a cow. She is the royalty digging herself into a path from which she may not be able to escape, and her episodes are the porter rambling about equivocating oneself into Hell.
I just watched ep. 24, the Nanami recap episode; it's notable to me that it only covers the seemingly "funny" moments, and not the moments that give those context, until the song about a calf lead to the slaughter plays at the end. Not the creeping realization that her irritating, mean, spiteful, and frequently outright malicious behaviour is encouraged on all sides by people like Touga and Tsuwabuki who, maliciously or not, want her to be blinded to her actions and attached to them. It leaves a lingering question of why is she like this? What's missing? throughout the recap. Also interesting is that Nanami, Utena, and Anthy spend most of the episode as shadows semi-gossiping behind a curtain, which is very reminiscent of the shadow-parable girls -- the same means by which ideas are distilled -- and it's only when she becomes angry that Nanami pushes out of the curtain and becomes real again. And of course, the position of weakness Nanami is in throughout the episode is actually one of Tsuwabuki's presumptuous imaginings, and at the very end Nanami wrests control of the situation into her own hands. Not even in a healthy way, but also by using the language of control and threats.
I don't know. All that feels like foreshadowing, or a hint thrown in the viewer's face, disguised as tension-relieving humour. It's hard to know what to take seriously with Nanami, but I'd rather err on the side of "everything".
bad news guys :(
very funny how sauron did the Dramatic Villain Monologue exactly once, nearly got overpowered by finrod's song, and then immediately decided to never do that again

tbh, he does still play into tropes, he just takes care to make sure those tropes are evil vizier and master manipulator xd
Considering Celebrimbor and Ar-Pharazôn, Sauron has identified that dialogue is a far more dangerous weapon than monologue.
(Technically the song battle was also dialogue, and he did win.)

Four of Swords: Overwhelmed and in need of rest
Why do kiwis have such massive fucking eggs “it’s because they are related to ostriches and-“ yeah ok but like why didn’t they evolve smaller eggs if I was in charge I would do that shit pronto. Thoughts?
their big eggs are actually that size for a similar reason to human babies having massive heads!! being bigger at birth can be important.
kiwi are trying SO HARD to become mammals. fur-like feathers, whisker-like feathers, little beady eyes, nocturnal, great sense of smell.... that's basically a mammal!! they're well suited for life on the forest floor.
their big eggs work alongside these adaptations to give them a leg up in the bird world. their young hatch already feathered! they're precocial, which means they're born with the ability to open their eyes and move around. like foals.
big egg = more powerful offspring from the get-go. babies don't need to spend precious time vulnerable while they develop on the ground when they've already done all that in the egg!
(unfortunately, with the introduction of mammals to aotearoa, these adaptations are a little less useful...)
Important addition: baby kiwi come out of the egg looking like they've come out of a shower with a hangover
They look like one of the downsides of emerging from an egg fully formed is how aware you are off just having come out on egg. First minute alive, already dealing with some fucking experience.
Unless you were a tech at NASA back in the day, when one time some hydrogen a) escaped in a particular building, and b) caught on fire. This was extremely difficult because hydrogen does NOT burn on the visible spectrum humans evolved to see (and flee). Rather, it technically does, but it’s so pale that in practice, no one could see it. Additionally, pure hydrogen burns without smoke and with so little ambient heat that you can’t really sense it till you walk into it. So, per the lore, for a few days all the techs in that building just walked around brandishing brooms in front of them like lances. If your broom lit on fire, congrats! You have located more burning hydrogen! Do not proceed!
oh my god it’s real and it was LITERALLY called “the broom method” holy shit
i say yay and yippee a lot but i mean it. i always mean it. *looks into the distance pensively*
sorry i can’t go out tonight i’m at home sitting down
