I checked out The Best of You in My Mind, and I am loving it so far - I think tender coming of age romances seem to lack the shrillness I often find grating in modern cdramas.

Honestly, I mostly was curious because of the leads. I adored Song Yiren in Ever Night (and she’s the sole thing that made Ever Night 2 bearable), and Zhang Yao has totally won me over in Love In Between. They are great here - with wonderful chemistry. (Also, I love that neither is drop dead gorgeous; I can buy them as random students so much easier.)

Also, the quiet devastation is done so well. Here she is basically slamming the door in his face because she saw her father cheat and through a convoluted jump in logic that somehow makes sense for her character and her age blames him (she lost a bet with him and the stake was her wearing fancy stockings; she did and hid them in the couch, her mom found out and had a fight with dad etc.) It’s clear this has nothing to do with that - the parents have been living largely separate lives for a long time and the dad didn’t just start cheating. But it’s easier for her to do that then to accept she couldn’t do anything to stop the break up of her family - to accept she is helpless. And it’s easier to blame him than herself (not that she should do either.)

One of the things I love about Song Yiren is that she’s so tiny she always gives me the height difference I crave. I mean, it was extra delicious when they paired her opposite Chen Feiyu in Ever Night since he’s one of the tallest cdrama actors out there, but it’s almost as delicious here with Zhang Yao.

The bickering!!! I don’t often find cdramas funny, but I was literally laughing at the two of them.

He literally chokes. Ahahahahahahha

Guess who is eating it after all. Heh.

I can definitely buy them as people who have known each other since childhood.
