They have a Global Device Identifier (GDID) Tracker that functions as a fingerprint for your PC that can surpass VPNs, proxy servers and countries. Although it can't survive a clean reinstall of Windows (it can survive updates), because Microsoft forces you to go to the internet and log in into a Microsoft account, they will be able to get to you.

Microsoft kept it secret and it was only found out when the FBI tracked a hacker thanks to the information Microsoft gave them.

You should be paying attention to this, and possibly consider moving away from Windows. If a government, especially the US government, doesn't like you for some reason, this could be seriously concerning.

For journalism, activism, or domestic abuse situations, skip Windows and use Linux routed through Tor instead of a commercial VPN. A GDID doesn’t care which VPN you use, only that it’s still the same Windows installation.

Two things back that up:

There’s no consent screen. A GDID gets assigned when you sign into a Microsoft Account. Apple’s advertising identifier needs an App Tracking Transparency prompt and a visible reset; Android’s works the same way. GDID has neither, and a Windows reinstall only gets you a new number Microsoft can still get back to the same account.

Then there’s activation. Massgrave, the group behind Microsoft Activation Scripts, notes that Windows setup sends hardware info to Microsoft and gets identifiers back, the same tokens later used for Store access and licensing: “It’s impossible to prevent Windows from getting a GDID without breaking activation and UWP app[s].” Anyone who lost a license after swapping a motherboard has already met a smaller version of this.

it really interested me at the time when people considered secret life to be the turning point of the series. like I can see now why bad I agree with discussions around mechanics versus player driven interaction and all that. but for me the turning point happened in lim life and that's because the series stopped serving my personal interest in high stakes games/death games with social play because the value of a life/death changed drastically. so then the method of tension did too (I remember lots of early lim life posts talking about how the season would get tenser and desperate as things got down to minutes instead of hours, and questions around how to best spend your time would crop up and feel dramatic. and that kind of happened) because it wasn't rooted in the knifes edge of a specific number of lives that you held onto and marked you socially in the colour above your head. and I realised that for me, I was still sort of in a UHC/Last Man Standing mindset and that's where the tension and therefore interest was for me. and that's not a mark against the season at all and I've come to love it a lot and clearly (opens my post history) had a lot to say about the seasons following. I just realised that my interest in death games was different then, that I like my tension early and my resource hoarding from the jump.

Actually saying I was in UHC/LMS mindset is too generous to minecraft as a format for death games. my primary interest was in death game/high stakes games manga and anime and while I knew that wasn't what I was getting with life series, up until lim life it was sort of a good enough simulacra of what I wanted, mashed up with a game and players I was already invested in. so it worked well enough.

Meanwhile Cleo turns into a paranoid bundle of nerves, barricades herself into a fortress on a highly defensible position, and goes the route of monopolising a resource to barter for a life (sugarcane + 47 stacks of sand, food). Every single interaction she has turns into a weird flip-flop of threats and backpedaling. She makes threats or is threatened in every single interaction. She makes two allies who are also paranoid and flighty, Big B and Lizzie, and it’s hilarious because Big B has chosen Cleo to be his protective guard dog without being able to offer anything in return, and Lizzie acts like she’s being held at gunpoint (bc Cleo cannot stop saying ominous shit). Social game: failing. In a very entertaining way. No life secured.

Ren goes the fucking bizarre defensive route of… trying to make himself so uncomfortable to interact with in an effort, I assume, to not be fucked with after failing miserably to become a merchant. The repeated self-immolation attempts. The suicide tower. The general air of misery. No life secured. One wellness check from Pearl achieved.
