Shot on the new iPhone 16 Pro, 'Mud' is a short film about family. Subjects reminisce on the lessons that their biological and chosen family members have left them with. #shotoniphone #iphone16pro #iphone16 #cinematicmode
Shot on the new iPhone 16 Pro, ‘Mud,’ is a stills and motion project visualizing the resilient spirit and the legacy it leaves.
I grew up studying my mom. I mirrored her mannerisms and unrelenting drive. The same drive that allowed her to build Motorola phones at night on an assembly line, to teach pre-school by day and to get her bachelors degree in the afternoons and weekends while caring for me by herself.
As my childhood friends and peers begin their lives as young parents, I’ve been fascinated by the idea of resilience. Of what we leave our children, what we model for our friends and what has been left to us.
What matters isn’t just an individual’s story but the legacy it creates for their loved ones both in inspiring them and building something out of mud, blood and bone for the future.
‘Mud,’ was made possible by receiving early access to the #iphone16pro from the homies @apple. #shotoniphone #iphone16

We making more money in 2024, here are some tips to make your pitches stand out:
1) Be consistent: It's a numbers game. I’m not saying pitch everyone always. But take time, maybe once a week to write an editor or two, an art director or two introducing yourself.
2) Find local places where creative decision makers are. Our friends are amazing! But we are looking for local agency creative directors, editorial design directors and small business owners. Find those places and say hello.
3) Keep it short. Take time to shorten your pitch and keep your capabilities deck short and to the point. What do you do, what do they do, how you see yourself potentially working together.
The best camera for you is the one in your hand and/or the one you can afford.
Mirrorless cameras generally are a lighter, easier to pack and have a worse battery life because of the electronic view finder.
DSLR cameras are louder (because of the mirror), heavier, but a bit more analog.
If you already have a camera, my advice is save your money for now and study what you have until you know it inside and out and it becomes second nature to you.
some of my favorite photos have been taken on all sorts of devices.
iF IT’S HELPFUL here are the cameras I use regularly:
- Canon 5d mark iv: all weather, all jobs powerhouse
- Fuji GRX100s: medium format, commercial jobs and portraits
- iPhone: BTS, portraits and video
- Canon R6: mirrorless camera for on set photography or lighter weight ravel
- Fuji xPro-3: fantastic camera for walking around

If you can afford it, give your clients a gift this holiday season.
Not as a 1 for 1 strategy but as a simple thoughtful thank you for someone who was a lovely collaborator with you.
I am partial to sending handwritten notes and maybe a small thoughtful gift.
The idea for me boils down to when folks are choosing who to work with again, they have another touch point to remember when considering you.
Couldn’t hurt.

Photography is painting with light. But what happens when you ignore color?
White balance is the key to mastering color in your images.
White balance is how your camera decides what true white is. If you or your camera (in auto mode) don’t choose it, you can make mistakes editing skin tones and products.
How to get an accurate white balance:
- When possible shoot in RAW or DNG. That way you can edit the white balance easily after the fact.
- Use a white card, at the beginning of each shoot or each segment of a shoot, photograph a white card so you can use it to set the white balance for all the images.
- Try your best not to mix multiple color temperatures in one image.

What is tethering and why do you do it?
Tethering is taking photos that go directly to the computer versus to a card.
It’s helpful for a bunch of reasons:
- So clients can see what you’re capturing while you’re photographing it.
- If you are photographing or filming for a specific aspect ratio you can see how the image you’re taking will work in the design
- It can be helpful during headshots for subjects to see how they look on camera.

You are more than your output. Your vision, your drive, your creativity, your passion, your energy all of that goes into your craft.
Give those things time to recover. Give yourself time to recover.
Take this video as a reminder to take many moments to recharge.
You can do your best in this capitalist society and get some rest.

We can now film ProRes footage directly to SSDs in #iphone15pro and tether! It’s about damn time. This is a huge shift for how filmmakers, photographers and other visual artists can manage their files.
When I filmed Flower in 2022, it took several hours for me to get a days worth of footage off the phone and on a drive. No more. Now we can film something in ProRes Log alongside a cinema camera, and grade it all without having to back up using a lightning cord.
So your BTS, your second camera, your POV shot can have a consistency it couldn’t before and you can access it way faster. Oh and you can film without worrying about phone storage like you used to.
Second fun new thing, you can tether directly to capture one from the iPhone, so your wedding photobooths, editorial or social quick turnaround jobs have one less step.
I’m still learning new things about the 15 Pro but as I learn more I’ll let y’all know what I see.

Low light photography is just photography when God is testing you.
So how do you do a better job at capturing exactly what you want?
- Use a tripod
- If you don’t have a tripod, make yourself a tripod. (Stand with one foot slightly in front of the other, pull your shoulders tight to your body, hold your breath and keep the camera as close to you as you can)
- Find your key light source and don’t block it.
- Whatever your lens’ minimum aperture is, go at least one stop up.

Let this be a reminder to clean your gear.
If you want it your gear to last, and you don’t want to spend all your time editing out dust, take time to clean it!
So how do you do it, point the sensor down, you don't want to dislodge dust only for gravity to put it right back in it.
Make sure the blower should never makes contact with the sensor itself, or you risk scratching it.
One more pro-tip, double check if your camera is weather sealed before taking it anywhere with excessive moisture or sand.
