Aubree: One of the twins wants it. The other twin is happy about these saltines.

Aubree: on your way home will you grab something caramel?

Aubree was in the safety zone of pregnancy. She supposed, with her medical background, that there wasn’t really a safe zone when it came to twins, but she was safer than she’d been three weeks ago. Her belly was roughly the size it had been when she’d been twenty-something weeks with Molly and it was double the morning sickness than she’d had with her, but having Seth and Molly to help her out made even the bad parts a million times better. Work wasn’t fun - meeting patients and having complete strangers touch her stomach made her a little queasy and her feet were always swollen and her back ached, but she’d promised not to take off until she was put on maternity leave. The best part of her day, though, was getting home and taking off her shoes and scrubs and putting on one of the many enormous shirts she’d purchased when she’d found out she was having twins and relaxing on the couch while Molly did reading or work for school and the dogs cuddled up to her and her belly. So as soon as she walked in, she kicked off her shoes, changed, and kissed each of her babies on the head before wandering into the living room and plopping down on the couch. “Five people today,” she told Seth, alluding to their nightly conversation of people nonconsentually touching her stomach. “Not too bad.”

Seth loved being married. It hadn’t been that long, sure, but he did not care. He had his girl and his baby girl and that’s all he needed. Adding on to the family one day would be great, too. He was honestly living the life. Nothing was going wrong at all. He was auditioning for Chopped in July and would find out if he made it and, if he did, he would be filming sometime in December or January. He was excited because he knew that his girls would be there cheering him on and if he lost, they would be there to tell him they loved him.

Yeah, his life was fantastic.

Once Aubree got home with entirely too much food, he gave her a kiss and pulled Molly into a hug. Seth was relieved that she had brought food home because between cooking dinner almost every night and making practice dishes, he was sometimes worn out from cooking. Aubree looked like she had something important to tell him but he couldn’t figure it out. It was like she was hiding something from him. He didn’t question it, though, because Molly was around and little ears hear everything. As soon as she was put to bed and sleeping, Seth was going to ask Aubree what was up but he didn’t have a chance. “Um…okay…” he said, a quizzical look on his face. Seth grabbed her purse and looked through it until he found a bag that seemed out of place. He pulled it out and it took a moment to register what was inside. His eyes found hers and then a grin broke out on his face. “Really?” he asked as he moved towards her. Seth picked her up and spun her around. “Oh my gosh,” he said against her lips as he put both hands on her face and pressed kisses.

“Really,” she answered, happy tears in her eyes once again. She laughed, the sound bubbling out of her throat. “I don’t think I’m that far along, but I could’ve gotten pregnant before the wedding. I stopped my birth control with ample time for preparation.” Aubree wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. “I just had a feeling. My lower back started to hurt and I’ve been getting headaches...those aren’t something I normally deal with. So I took a test...or three...and, well, voila. We’re having a baby.” She shrugged, happily touching her stomach. “We’re going to have a new baby Watters soon.”

Her last pregnancy had been fine. Lonely and hard to handle on her own at times, but all in all it had been fine. She’d been too young and not at all ready for a baby, but she’d learned how to parent and love someone she’d made all on her own. Now she got to do it again, this time as an adult with a home and a job and a husband to help her along. It was exciting, though it wasn’t new, and it filled her with so much love that she thought her heart might burst. “I have to make a doctor’s appointment to make sure everything’s right and up to date, but that won’t be for a week or so, once I can get in there on my day off. And I don’t want to tell anyone until we’re passed the safety marker. Maybe Molly, but I know she struggles with keeping secrets sometimes, especially with her grandmas,” she said, rolling her eyes. “But you have say in this too.”

Married life was everything Aubree had ever thought it would be. Her family was a matched set of loving adults and doting parents to a daughter that wasn’t biologically both of theirs. They had pets and good jobs and huge opportunities coming up and she hadn’t ever been happier than she had been since the day she and Seth had said I do. The birth control talk had happened early on in their engagement and she’d stopped hers in enough time to be able to conceive once they were married, if she’d timed it correctly.

Overjoyed at seeing the two lines on the three different tests she’d done, Aubree had cried in the bathroom at work and put all three tests into a ziploc baggie in her purse. This time was going to be different than her first pregnancy. She was going to have someone at her side the whole way, someone who would love their baby just the way she did. She cried again on her way home, wiping away her tears and giving Molly an extra long hug when she picked her up from school. The two of them picked up a smorgasbord for dinner and they ate as a family, the secret Aubree was keeping bubbling away inside her viciously. Once Molly was put to bed, Aubree pulled her husband into their room and kissed him square on the lips. “Go get in my purse. Look. See what’s in there,” she ordered, trying to keep him from guessing her secret.

Sometimes itw as still surreal to him that Aubree had agreed to anything with him. He still remembered giving her his phone number on the receipt from the vet. Then they ran into each other grocery shopping. It just snowballed since then and in a few months they would be legally married. It really was amazing how things worked out. “Probably a good idea,” he said, his nose scrunching up. The man couldn’t believe how lucky he was to be with Aubree and to have Molly as his daughter. He loved how no one ever gave them a second look when they were at the store together. His friends from work knew the situation and wholeheartedly supported Seth when it came to Molly and Aubree. His old boss, Dr. Burke, loved that he had decided to settle down. “I think that’s a perfect plan. Molly always throws in the hard ones and that’s what I need.”

“Molly is ruthless. She makes a choice and she sticks with it.” Aubree looked down at her daughter and smiled, watching her sit with a puppy to either side of her, petting one and pulling on a tug rope with the other. She was stubborn, but not inflexible. Aubree had done her best to raise her daughter and she was very proud of the person that Molly was growing into. “Go. Get started. We’ll brainstorm.” Aubree shooed Seth into the kitchen and sat down with Molly, whispering to her so they could give him their ingredients to work with.
