End of Quarter Reflection

From the begining of this term I was really uneasy with photoshop, and I was until we did the Poster assingment. I really felt that I had gotten so much better at the tools. I was able to access most of the tools on the left panel with ease and it wasn't like searching for a puzzle piece when you don't know what it looks like. I felt that not only my photoshop skills got better but also my design skills got better. I took more attention to where I was placing things on my layouts. I took more notice to colors and shape, I felt like my pieces were actually pieces of art and not just some random collection of pictures trying to tell a story.

As for coding, I've gotten significantly better. I practiced a ton in my CS courses and in my Art of Data assignment. I really feel like im headed in the right direction! I was even able to use a coding project I did in processing and formatted it for the book assignment. I really feel like I made something that people are intrigued by and it feels great. Im getting more confident in the idea of being able to work in my field.

This class has really helped me with a lot of different things and I am so glad I took it! I know it will come of use in the work place and with any more generative art that I come up with!

This is DNA, my tumblr driven data artwork. I scraped every post from the specified blog and grabbed the post type. Then used a processing library to draw a circle for every post. Each circle is then filled with a Color that is chosen by the type of post it is.(white is photo, red is answers, green is text, blue is video, yellow is audio). Many of these blogs have over 20,000 posts. Which allows the program to show the wildly elaborate, connections that make up a blog. I was inspired by the biological process of D.N.A. sequencing. I was extremely satisfied with how it turned out!

Ethics in Digital Media

Dayz was originally a mod for a game called ARMA 2 which is a military simulation game, Dayz is a zombie apocalypse game. It took its mod and created a stand alone game away from ARMA.

So a problem with this immediately is that the game was originally created from the tools that ARMA 2 provided. This meant that people were buying ARMA just to play Dayz (myself included), now that Dayz isn't affiliated with ARMA, they lose all that income that they were once getting. Thus they are losing money on something that they actually created. So this issue becomes is it fair for Dayz to make money off the game that ARMA actually made the game.

For the ARMA company Dayz was making them a ton of money and while it wasn't their actual creation, Dayz was using their work and making a new game out of it and then turning profit.

While the Dayz mod was created with the tools and engine that ARMA was using. The Dayz concept is completely unique it has nothing to do with story or most of the game play involved with ARMA and I believe they allow gamers to have access to mod tools so that things like this can be birthed. Which ARMA obviously took advantage of.

To me I think that Dayz is completely within their rights to use the tools that ARMA provided and if I am correct, a company has to forfeit a certain amount of control over to the community when the give up tools like that. The Dayz mod was enough of a difference that the people who bought the game to play Dayz didn't actually play ARMA. So in reality ARMA was taking advantage of Dayz. If another game came along with a game that was exactly like Dayz up to even the HUD then it would have been stealing the game, and if a mod was created from ARMA that just changed a few things and then took that engine and created a game with just a few changes then it would be stealing but the two entities are seperate enough in this case that Dayz was perfectly in the right to do what they did.

Uncanny Reflection

With the self portrait assignment, I struggled with it a lot as I think that I often look weird in photos(maybe its because its not like the mirror that I'm used to) and I am also not a great photographer so its not all great but I had a lot of fun playing with the concepts that we talked about in class and using it on myself. It was interesting to see how quick it was to get rid of blemishes. However I struggled with a lot of the "Beauty" I found most of the norms to not be that beautiful and was definitely not able to(with my basic skills) get it to look right, so i really struggled with messing to much with my face. I did however give myself bigger arms and a "stronger" shoulders. I felt the "worse" was more uncanny not only because, I did a lot more modification to myself but also because, I made myself bald! It freaked me out. The whole time I was doing this I had to remind myself what was "beautiful" because I don't think I wanted to be like them. I had to tell myself you're doing this for a project, just a project. I thought I would be all about it but as I was doing it, I felt weird messing with my face and the skin tones and all of that I just didn't want to look that way. I thought that if it had been someone else it would have been easy but because it was me it was a brick wall I just couldn't mess with myself that much. It just felt bad.

I used Tumblr Blue as my background color because I thought it might look good with the fumetii assignment. I am not the most talented pencil artist so I end up just scribbling a lot and I try to work with it as much as possible with this piece.

This is my self portrait assignment. The first picture is just the regular me no alterations, the second is the uncanny me where I made my shoulders straight and bigger along with my arms got rid of some of the "bags" under my eyes some blemishes and straightened out my jaw a bit.(all of which started to make me look really weird.) I also removed the shadow on my shirt. I couldnt get my skin to look healthy again however so that was frustrating. The third is the ugly me in which I removed my hair and stretched my forehead out a bit while leaving a little hair on the sides. I couldn't get my head perfectly smooth but that was okay.

I probably spent more time on this one then the others but I would say it was my favorite. I took the "background image" deep in the Texas Photo Archives along with my net collage. It just seemed perfect fit with Nessy in the background.

Where Am I now?

I am currently in my room on my computer, scrolling through tubmlr, finishing up assignments. I am a Computer Science major, with a minor in EMDA. A lot of my art experience used to be less "digital" but I have really grown to love digital art, I'm currently into a lot of generative art. (Sergio Albiac specifically). More often then not you can find me either on my computer or climbing with friends. The picture I used was a picture of myself jumping over a gap on top of Grizzly Peak. It is probably my favorite picture of myself mostly because it looks a lot cooler than it actually was. Some of my goals... well I suppose for this course getting more familiar with Photoshop as my experience with it was very minimal. Other school oriented goals would be to get better at coding, it is the field I want to work in and its something I really need to become more proficient at. General life goals? I need to get stronger for climbing. As for all my goals, I'd like to think that I am working towards all of them slowly but steadily. I'm excited to learn more from this class, and have really enjoyed it so far.
