Touching Heart Midterm Project for VIS147A
My goal with this project was to have a real world input into a computational program and manage to recreate a virtual feature of the real world in a computer. I achieve this by using a heart rate sensor which was connected to an arduino and a Leap Motion controller. The Arduino ran a program that output the sensor data to the serial port. I use this input in processing to make an animation move as a real heart using the variations of the sensor data. After this I use a Leap Motion Controller Library to get the hands into processing. When got the user hands I use its position relative to the screen to modify the animation. The animation was composed of several ellipses drawing that change its radios depending on the sensor data. Also I iterate through different angles to achieve the 3D structure that was observed on the video. The animation was my hardest challenge since my vision of the project was really ambitious. I tried several procedures such as different polygon figures and colors until I reached the one that look more similar to my specifications. The code can be downloaded at https://github.com/Atlrrific/HeartRateAnimationProject

Midterm Proposal VIS147A
My project will consist of a heart animation that will be controlled by two inputs a Leap Motion Controller and an Arduino Heartbeat sensor. The heart beat sensor will control the animation by moving along the beat of the user. This animation will represent the user heart and will allow the user to manipulate and play with it using the Leap Motion Controller. The animation will be developed using processing and the input form the arduino will allow the processing code to change parameters depending on the arduino output. I have always wanted to use the leap motion and I was wondering what can the applications be on an artwork. Also I would like to represent physical conditions on the virtual world such as the heartbeat of a person and the interaction with it. I would like this to be more of an interactive artwork where a user plays with another user's heart. The materials that will be the heartbeat sensor, arduino, a strap for the sensor, Leap Motion controller and lots of code. I have experience on coding since my major is Computer Engineering and I think I can accomplish this under the timeframe.
Have to buy this for midterm project. I hope it's accurate :).

First Mini Project for my VIS 147a Class :)
Donna Haraway, A Cyborg Manifesto, 1985 response.
I found it interesting to have an analysis to a science fiction concept that have been referenced several times but it has never been analysed with such level of detail and depth. Also, if we compare the time when this was written and the advanced that we have accom[plised now, we can observe that the line between human and machine is blurring in a different way that we expected. In Haraway’s section “Informatics of Domination” we can observe a comparison between the concepts that will and have evolved from hierarchy domination to the Informatics of Domination. I find this section very accurate to the world we are living now. We are concert about information to be a incredible valuable resource which has power and control over our lives. Perfection is no longer something we seek to achieve, we now look for optimization of the existing systems. Can we make things faster, larger and better has been the motto to a lot of the new problems that we are looking to solve. In my opinion, it was a really interesting reading and made me thing if the concept of cyborg is really a futuristic machine/human hybrid or a regular current individual who is attached and controlled by technology.
Marshall McLuhan: "The Medium is the Message" response for VIS 147A
I enjoy the reading and in particular the introduction of the term “extensions” to represent our human behavior to become better at doing regular tasks. This concept made me wonder about the implications of the computer as an extension and the relationship with the smartphone. We used computer as an extension of our computational abilities and to resolve tasks in a more automated and efficient form. However, at the same time handwritten, paper tasks and computational abilities became “amputations”. In this same way the smartphone came to become an extension of an extension. Smartphones are a computer that connects to the outside world, out main source of information, communication and entertainment. It has replace vide games in some matter, interaction and in some parts the computer. Now i want to go beyond that with another device, “The selfie stick”. The selfie stick is an extension to our phones which allow us to take pictures at a prefered angle since we do not have the arm distance to do so. Before this idea we used to asked somebody to take a picture if us, but the selfie stick just amputate that interaction to make things “simpler” for us and more individualistic. The purpose and the consequences of the selfie stick comes from our narcissistic and individualistic approach to get that perfect picture. In my opinion, it is more an amputation to our human characteristic of being a social being, which purpose is to show off ourselves on the media so we can create be likeable and social in a completely different way.
Alex Parker, a PHD astronomy student took Van Gogh’s 1889 painting, and built it back up from arguably humanity’s other most famous space portraits - those taken by the Hubble telescope over the last 20 years.
