As part of the America 250 celebration, the Greater Astoria Historical Society is presenting the Blackwell Door Summer Exhibit at the Advance Masonic Temple in Astoria.
The Blackwell Door, believed to date to 1765, once belonged to the Blackwell family’s stone house in Ravenswood. What makes it especially extraordinary is that it still bears the British “Arrow of Confiscation,” also called the crow foot mark, carved into it during the Revolutionary War after Colonel Jacob Blackwell fled in 1776.
It’s not just a door — it’s a surviving witness to Queens history, British occupation, and the colonial past of Astoria.
The exhibit also follows the successful Long Island City 1776 author talk with Richard Melnick, and visitors should keep an eye out for historical walking tours hosted by Alan Arichavala of the Greater Astoria Historical Society. These tours will guide participants through the area of the Blackwell family’s original homestead and nearby sites before ending at the exhibit itself.
