so, as of right now, i donāt know how much i wish to continue this blog. usually i say/feel something like this and then, go right back to it, but the truth is i wanted to make this post a month ago and held back because i thought iād come back soon. i was wrong.
this blog isnāt as much of a comfortable place for me anymore! lots of reasons why, no need to go into detail. but i love marianna, i do, it just feels sometimes pointless to show her off and post about her. she doesnāt get as much attention. maybe iām not trying hard enough, maybe people just donāt care, maybe both. i donāt know.
as of right now, i donāt know what i want to do with her. i feel like as of right now, my inspiration to run a whole blog for her is, just well, yknow -- dead. my only solution is to remake and start fresh, but right now i just donāt feel like i can, not yet
iām pretty, um, busy in some ways, in other ways - i just donāt have the mental capacity for two ask blogs. which is why my focus is centred around updating @askromanoo as much as possible
so as of right now, this blog is inactive/on indefinite hiatusĀ ; sorry. i will figure out what i will be doing with her as soon as i feel i have the time :ā/
as always, if you wish to follow me still, i have @askromanoo for my main ask blog, my main/art/fandom blog is @bromano and you can find me on other sites linked through there
thank u all for those who did support this blog at all! i hope i can return to doing something with her soon. for now, catch me on my other blogs.

an outfit ref i forgot to post for her traditional outfit!! :> iām also being indecisive about her hairstyle, it can be down or in a bun, iām just liking the bun bc some people were mistaking her for her nyo romano and i donāt want ppl to think that, so iām trying to make her more distinguishable
but hereās her officiall design now for her traditional outfit, iāve kept changing it and now i think iāll keep it like this for now, and if i do want to change it iāll update this then -- at least now iāve got a ref.
some meanings and stuff under the cut.
three/triangle symbolism.
the number three, as well as the shape of a triangle, has a significant amount of symbolism that is important to sicily, being best known inthe form of the sicilian symbol the triskelion (in sicilian/italian: trinacria), which is on the sicilian flag - the medusa head surrounded by three bent legs, and three stalks of wheat.
the medusa head is a symbol of the patron greek goddess of athena's protection of sicily, which is known in mythology to have been adorned on athena's shield.Ā
the three bent legs represent the three capes of the island - peloro (punta del faro), messina; passero, syracuse; lilibeo (cape boeo), marsala - and create the three points of the triangle which is the island's shape.Ā
the three stalks of wheat represent the fertility of sicily's land.
this symbolism appears frequently in her design, from the way her bangs are parted in three, to her curl resembling a triangle shape, and the three stalks of wheat and flowers on her dress, as well as the appearance of three stripes on the hem of her dress (gold-red-gold), and then the flowers in three on her headdress - it all has meaning to sicily.
agriculture symbolism.
sicily is practically known for it's agriculture, which is why it has been called "the garden of the mediterranean"; powers that have sought it for the longest time throughout it's history, have done so for it's fertile lands that are that way due to it's volcanic eruptions, and helped along by the island's pleasant climate. some of the main agricultural products produced are wheat, citrons, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, etc. i have bolded wheat & oranges because those are what are frequent in her design.
wheat is represented in the stalks of wheat both in her dress and earrings, on her dress in threes, and in her earrings they are climbing up the hoops of it. wheat is a very common produce in sicily, which is why it's a symbol of sicily in many ways, most notably, as mentioned before, in the trinacria.
oranges, represented in the form of zagara blossoms, which are orange blossoms that sprout along sicily's orange trees. zagara blossoms are known widely as the flower of sicily, not exactly officially, but what most would think of if trying to associate a flower with the island. why? likely because of how sicily's orange trees are a common produce, and it's signature blood orange 'moro'. they are in her design in the form of the patterns on her dress and headdress, as well as the the flowers on her earrings.
agriculture is very important to sicily (and southern italy as a whole), even today being a huge basis of the economy of the south and sicily, important to the island historically and modernly.
anything extra.
her dress is based off the traditional tarantella dress, though there are several different types of dresses represented in sicily traditionally, i have chosen a very standard long skirt and corset over a poofy blouse. it is very heavily referenced to this one. the colors of it - primarily red & gold - are obviously from the flag. in the flag, the red represents palermo, and the gold/yellow represents corleone - palermo being it's capital, and corleone being a city that, in medieval times, was renowned for it's agriculture. woa, another appearance of agriculture.
other means for the colors in her outfit, white, black, and pink, do not hold too much but can be noted.
white is known best for purity, and being angelic in a religious tone. given sicily is very religiously sound, it could be considered significant.
black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color. black is also a very prominent color in traditional sicilian fashion, and for a long while it was usually only what women would wear. not uncommon in much formal fashion in sicily.
pink is a color of love, and expresses tenderness, femininity, and kindness. a bit gushy for the likes of marianna, but it's whatever. the pink in her design is rather muted/mauve-looking.

Introducing: Ancient Sicily - Sicania/Σικανία. Sicilyās Father.Ā
If anyone has checked my new updated rules, youād have seen the little tidbit in the faq I threw in about Marianna being too dark. Though, since I donāt update much lately, Iām gonna go over that here, and now introduce a big part of what makes her skin brown: her father.
Since this will be long--
You see many people tend to think that Sicily began with only the Greeks and Romans, which just isnāt true. Before even the Phoenicians had established trade on the island, itās natives had lived there -- the Sicani, Sicels, and Elymi. These three tribes were closely related in culture, though still separate. Little is recorded about them, which is perhaps why itās common thought that the Greeks were the first people there.
These tribes were very likely Moorish, people that had come from North Africa to Iberia, and then later migrated to Sicily around 2000-1600 BCE. Again, little is recorded, so a lot of things are vague and vary.
But the biggest thing is that were Moorish; that means dark skin, dark curly hair, and dark eyes - which you can see up above, is presented very clearly. And well.. this is Mariannaās father. But thatās not the only reason she has dark features; you see, a majority of the Siclian population is ethnic. Thatās why itās common to see brown/tan skin tones, dark brown eyes, and dark curly hair among the Sicilian (and really, generally southern Italian) population.Ā āSicilianā is a mixed, diverse race, as Sicily was once considered the boiling pot of Europe, so itād be unfair to give her light skin, hair, or eyes.
(Note: her mother is Ancient Greece, whom I also drew but posted to my Romano ask blog, since sheās his mother, too - but Sicania is not his father.)
Iāll be posting more here about her father once I can finish his full design.
Sicily/Sicania belong to me.Ā So do my headcanons. Pls donāt copy

Saint Lucyās Day is a festive Catholic holiday celebrated in Sicily, on December 13, which is supposedly the shortest day of the year. Saint Lucy is the patron of Siracusa, or in Italian, Santa Lucia (also as she is known in the famous Neapolitan Song).
The holiday celebrates Santa Lucia, with candlelight processions in the evening called the parade of light; followed by the Feast of Saint Lucy.
They also carry a statue of Lucy through the streets of Syracuse.
Sicilians pay tribute to a miracle performed by Lucia in 1582, during a famine. They recall the legend as it goes, that Lucia brought ships loaded with wheat into the harbor, and the Sicilians ate it without taking time to grind it into flour.
Thus, they eat cuccia, a treat made of cooked wheat (and sugar, butter, chocolate, and milk) -- and according to custom, bread shouldnāt be eaten, and cuccia should be the only source of wheat.
this is a bit late but i was working on this the past few days and even if itās two days belated, i still want to celebrate it!!
this drawing was based off thisĀ & this, paintings of santa lucia.
ā®- And a name to hear their real feelings for them. Seborga
my muse cannot lie.
I donāt know Seborga that well, I have no feelings about him. After all, he is just a tiny town on the other side of the country from me. And any time I knew him before he was much younger than me.Ā
i donāt even have much to put behind this ;; it is insisted that seborga was founded in the 900s, and later was a territory of the holy roman empire, and then laterĀ āsoldā to the savoy dynasty in the 1700s. really iām not going into much detail because seborga is just a self-proclaimed principality and even referred to as aĀ āfantasy stateā on itās wiki. itās an old village. nothing too special about it.
marianna isnāt close to him in any way. doesnāt know him that well. so she truthfully doesnāt have anything to say about him.
šĀ - And a name to ask if they would start a relationship with them.
ā - And a name to ask if they would sleep with them.
ā®- And a name to hear their real feelings for them.<
ā - And a name/ topic to hear what they hate the most about it/them.
ā-Ā ForĀ one of the wrost mischief they did.
āŖ -Ā For a kink.
å - For a phobia they have.
⦠- For a guilty pleasure.
āĀ - Next to any question to have it answered sincerely, no matter how personal or embarassing.

On 2nd of November, Sicilians celebrate āU Jornu ri Muortiā, which means āDay of the deadā.
On this day Sicilians pay a visit to cemeteries to pray, while children receive āU Cannistruā, a wicker basket full of nuts, sweets and toys from family members who have died.
I was only 2 years old when my grandmother died. However, this tradition made it possible to keep her in my heart and to feel loved and somehow connected with those relatives that sadly had left me when I was a child.

Your flag is so weird omg what's the meaning behind that?
I wouldnāt say itās that weirdāthe biggest thing with it is the representation of the numberĀ ā3ā². The threeĀ bent legs form triangles, which represents the trinacria (triskelion), which is a symbol thatās been pretty common here since the Greeks. But they can also represent the three valli of the island, which is when I was split into three parts during the Muslim rule. And, it represents the shape of Sicily, which has three ends and resembles a triangle.
The head of Medusa is meant to be a symbol of protection, and her three wheat ears represent my agriculture and fertile land.
The red represents Palermo, and the gold represents Corleone.
This odd little curl of hair that sticks out of my hair is triangular, too, soā?
art trade for @aphromanoo/@asksicilia of her Sicily OC! I think this is the fastest Iāve ever done an art trade half, ever. XD
Iām sorry her hair is so light ⦠it was supposed to be sHINY. I drew it on my phone and it looked a lot darker on there ⦠and generally the colors are wonky so I apologize. ;w; I hope you like it anyway.
