I've been browsing a lot of Mary Sue critique forums and there have been a lot of people going around saying that no matter how badly written a canon character is (such as Bella or some of the extreme magical girls *COUGHAMUFROMSHUGOCHARA*), they can't officially be called "Mary Sue". Is this true?
It really depends on how individual people classify and define a Mary Sue. My definition is a bit more specific (and can be found in the faq on the main blog) than most people’s. But so long as there is no solid, universal definition of a Mary Sue, then of course people will disagree on who can be a Mary Sue.
On a side note though, Mary Sues can only be fictional (since “Mary Sue” is a trope in fiction). Real people cannot be Mary Sues.
