It really depends on how individual people classify and define a Mary Sue. My definition is a bit more specific (and can be found in the faq on the main blog) than most people’s. But so long as there is no solid, universal definition of a Mary Sue, then of course people will disagree on who can be a Mary Sue.

You can always just try browsing fanfic websites yourself and asking friends to browse :D

Honestly, double check that it fits the setting and tone that the character is in. A character enduring brutal childhood abuse and having lost all of their family to a mass murderer wouldn’t be very fitting for a light-hearted adventure like Ouran Highschool Host Club or Soul Eater. If it’s a fan character, then having endured such a thing would also kind of steal the spotlight in settings like The Hobbit because their issues would overshadow (or come close to overshadowing) the hardships that canon characters have faced. Just ask yourself: does this seem fitting for this setting or story? And if it’s a fan character, ask yourself: am I making canon characters look like their lives weren’t so bad after all? Is my character an example of “things could always be worse”?

The flame really depends on their role more so than their personality. Rain is stereotypically calm and soothing to end conflicts, but Squalo is anything but calm and soothing. Still, he ends conflicts to bring about tranquility. 

Focus on what purpose they would serve, how they can be used in the family as well as fights, and get creative with how they use their flames to fulfill their role.

Yea if you turn cancer into a fetish, plot device, sympathy bait, or something to have in common with a love, then you need to look at your life and evaluate your choices.

I personally hate any botched attempt to include a mental condition/disease where no research was done; but when someone uses “schizophrenic” or “bipolar” to describe a behavior, not a disease, then I get pissed.

Normally I don’t comment on OC pics/profiles, but if I see that, I will comment explaining how it’s a bit offensive and offer an alternative way to describe the OC behavior. I suggest that everyone do this, but try to remain polite and educate them rather than bash them.

They basically asked why we were so snarky and attacking authors with facepalm gifs and “kill me now” statements. They were very polite about it, and I’m posting my answer in the hopes they see it.

Well you see, those are reactions to what’s written, not an attack on the creators. If instead of “kill me now”, I wrote “this author needs to die” (which would be atrocious to say) or “stop writing for the love of god” then that would be an attack on the creator. Almost all of my snarkiness is directed at the content, not the author. If they are hurt, then they’re taking it personally when it isn't personal.

No but in all seriousness the blog has been inactive for like a year now and "what you wrote makes no sense because of this reason" is not a personal attack.
