At first, she found his stumbling over his own words to be infuriating, and her expression began to change to one of impatience. Poppy loathed to be lied to, to have information withheld from her for any reason, be it that she was perhaps too young(when she was little and she listened at the door of her mother's meetings with kingdom officials, hungry for more knowledge on her kingdom's inter workings) or even a more reasonable thing, she could just be seen as spoiled in that way. But as he continued on his words became clearer, but also softer and more distressed. More and more so until it pained her to listen. It was now that her features had relaxed into a mix of shock and disbelief. Somehow, when she had first met Calvin, it always seemed, to her, that he was such a bright presence that no shadow could ever touch him. He was smiling, vivid, lively...Nothing she could ever have in her sheltered life, as content as she had been with it. This changed the more she saw of him, this perspective. In a way, you could say he became more human to her, something more tangible, perhaps. But this, she had not ever seen him like this, had never seen anyone like this, save for herself. In short, she did not know what to do. And there was only silence between them. After what seemed to her like an eternity, Poppy took a deep breath she had not realized she was holding in, and spoke. "Oh, Calvin..." She said this softly, carefully. As though any words voiced above a whisper would shatter him. "Of course...Of course she matters...She's a person after all, I mean. She certainly seems to care for you a great deal." She dragged in another deep breath, her heart was beating audibly in her ears. She could not think of what to say, and what she had said sounded distant and wrong in her own ears. Carefully, she took Calvin's hands in her own. "And, well, if there is anyone who deserves to be happy, it is you, Calvin. You have done so much...Hold such obligation." With a cautious hand, she held his cheek, guiding his eyes to her own. "I want you to be happy. Or, as happy as you can be...Not to say that even if you escaped his whole ordeal life would be perfect, but--It would be considerably better, no that's not right...ah, well first thing, you need to tell her. Joanna, I mean. Tell her you cannot be here. I believe she deserves an explanation. b-but that's only my opinion, of course..." She knew she was rambling, but she couldn't stop herself. Her cheeks colored in her frustration. "What I mean to say is Calvin, for goodness sakes, come away from here, please. With or without me, as long as you do, I'll shall be fine" --------------------------------------- Cal melted into her touch; lost himself momentarily in her flushed cheeks. Her plea wrapped around him, the words dancing and twisting in his ears like they did on paper. Away. Leave. He could run from thus grayscale existence; slide down the wall of the abandoned wing and steal away into the forest. Run far away; he was always good at running. He could take Poppy's hand and leave his heavy heart behind, forget the people who may come looking. Who would really come, though? Darren was young for a stone person. He had at least a good hundred years left before he fell to dust. Cal would be gone by then, the humanity his mother had gifted him taking pity on his mortality. And even so, why would they want him in the future if they didnt even want him now? He thought there were people to save here, but he was beginning to realize that they didn't want to be. And then there was Joanna. She would be better off without him. She could find someone who truly loved her. She could dutifully serve the kingdom she believed in, the kingdom that was really her home. He could talk to her quickly or...otherwise communicate. He knew any escape wouls have to be made quickly. Cal studied Poppy's face slowly, searching for the ability to give the answer he longed to grace his lips. Silence hung heavily. "Let's go, " he murmured suddenly, his entire body snapping to attention. Possibilities lined up in front of him in neat rows as his mind raced. There was a future with outcomes he could control. Outcomes that made him happy. Outcomes with a woman he genuinely loved. Just the idea that it was possible brought a spark back to his eye. "Run away with me, Poppy," he whispered excitedly.
