I can still understand Yup’ik cuz I spoke it as a kid, but I don’t get much chance to practice it these days. None of my family speaks it to me cuz they assume I don’t know it? I’m the only halfblood in my family still living in the area and since my dad was never really in the picture I’m, like, the token white relative. The only one that really talked to me was my grandma (cuz she could barely speak English) and she’s gone now.

Which is! Pretty bad! Cuz I’m the only at my workplace that can KINDA speak Yup’ik so whenever a Yup’ik elder that can’t really understand English comes in they expect me to handle the translation. Which is made harder because there is no real word for ‘bank’, I keep having to say ‘the money place’. I get super nervous and screw up and I kinda wish I lied on my resume and said my only language is English, tbh
