“Sounds fitting.” He dropped a heavy remark directly at Sakura as his eyes met her gaze daringly, the darkness of his irises nearly challenging the pink haired woman. Get in if you can.

Sakura was thoughtful for a moment before answering.

“Aa.” She sent a coy smile his way, as her eyes crinkled slightly under her carefully constructed façade. She went on to accept his silent challenge with anticipation.

His lips twitched with the beginnings of a half-smirk.

Oh you know I got a few

sasuke’s heart pounds against his chest as sakura slides down from on top of him to plop down on the bed next to him. his whole body tingles in the wake of their lovemaking, his ears ringing and his veins buzzing with the height of it all, and all of it starts to dissipate as he comes down. they lie apart, untouching. they revel in the closeness, in the proximity, in the warmth that envelopes each of them without having to be wrapped up in each other. he hears the wind’s whispers filter in through the curtains of the open window, the sound of the streets farther out, and the sound of her heavy breathing evening out until there’s nothing but a soft breath. then−

“sasuke-kun?”

“hn.” he turns his head to look at her. she’s staring straight ahead, up at the ceiling. she’s bathed in soft moonlight and it makes her look like she’s glowing. with her pale pink hair splayed across his pillows and her legs tangled up in his sheets while her top half is bare and he could see the rise and fall of her chest, her pink buds perking up from the cold, she looks absolutely ethereal.

god, if he isn’t in bed with the most beautiful woman in the entire world…

“i’m sorry,” she says, and he’s immediately sobered by how her voice sounds like glass breaking. he’s about to reach out for her when− “for the land of iron.” he freezes, his hand in the air, halfway to her shoulder. “you were so far gone and naruto−”she scoffed, “that fool is willing to follow you to the depths of hell.”

once, you might have, too, he wanted to say. the genin who had been hopelessly infatuated with him would have followed him to the depths of hell−begging him, even, to take her with him. but that little girl had grown into a fine kunoichi, a prized shinobi of the hidden leaf; putting her village first before her own happiness, and she came to kill him for them, as a final act of her unselfish love. 

he couldn’t be any prouder.

she pauses, and he sees her eyes grow glassy with tears. her voice cracks when she says, “i didn’t mean to… give up on you.”

he understood her, of course. and if he had been in the right mind at the time, he would’ve thanked her if he still had the breath to do so. he’s disgusted with himself−that boy from the past−and hates that she thinks she’s the one in the wrong in all this. “you didn’t give up on me, sakura,” he says quietly. “you tried to save me. i’m the one who’s sorry.”

“did you hate me?” she asks shakily, almost fearfully.

sasuke breathes out. this isn’t the kind of conversation he wants to have after months of not seeing her, not being with her, not touching her, not being inside her, not being next to her. but it’s a conversation long overdue, avoided and ignored because they’re treading on new territory and most couples don’t have a history of trying to kill each other. he turns to lie on his side, his dark eyes looking deeply into hers. “i always thought that i hated everyone. but not you, never you,” he starts slowly. “but i hated you then. in that moment, i really, truly hated you.”

the soft gasp that escapes her hurts him.

she had been infatuated with him since even before they were genin. she followed him around and did whatever she thought would please him. he had deemed her affections superficial, from the very beginning. but there was something about her, past all her girlish antics and immaturity, that drew him to her. when he ignored the girl who was shamelessly obsessed with him, he was faced with a kind, warm soul. she understood him, or at least she tried to, and maybe at one point she had made him feel like he wanted to be understood. to lower his walls and let her see everything; all of his insecurities, the demons from his past, the bloodlust that’s tucked away in the deepest recesses of his mind. and somehow he knew that if he showed all of himself to her, she wouldn’t be one to shy away and run. no, not this girl who bravely stood her ground against sound nin she couldn’t possibly match up to just to protect him and naruto. not this girl who fearlessly and relentlessly clung to him while he was frenzied with anger and overwhelmed with new power−he knew he’d scared her then, but she didn’t dare let go.

she grounded him. she calmed him down. she was a light that chased away his darkness and he thought she might’ve succeeded in driving it away if he didn’t hold on to it so tightly. she became familiar, she became security, she became someone he trusted and deeply cared for.

that’s probably why he held on to her confession, that night before he left all those years ago. he wanted none of her bold, foolish affections; they would only hinder him. but that didn’t stop her words from embedding themselves deep into his mind, his heart, lodged in the cavity of his chest. and some nights, when he wasn’t so full of anger and resentment or when he wasn’t so tired he could barely think, his mind would ponder on those words. and he might have even considered the idea of going back to konoha, to team 7, to her, once he’s killed itachi−if he even survived it.

she was unwavering. she was, if he had the chance, someone to come home to. she was the last person he thought would turn their back on him.

“i knew you wouldn’t join me, from the very beginning.” i knew you were there to kill me. “i felt… so betrayed.”

there had been a lot of anger inside him that day, driving him mad. he felt betrayed. betrayed by konoha, the village he had once called home. betrayed by his brother, for no matter how much he loved itachi and understood that he only did the most for him, his older brother still lied to him and drove him into this path. but most of all, it’s this girl−this girl whose loyalty laid with konoha, whose love and warmth once reminded him of his family, this girl who swore she loved him with all her heart.

this girl with a kunai to his back.

sasuke slides his hand from her stomach to her sternum, his fingers splayed over her heart while the tips grazed the base of her throat. he eyes the darkening red spots all over her neck, in the shape of his lips, and he can’t help but think of a different mark he’s placed on her neck, in the shape of death. “i wanted to kill you,” he says. “i like to think that i would never intentionally hurt you, but i wanted so badly to. i thought that if i killed you, only then can you truly be mine.”

there’s a pregnant pause and a tense silence falls over them. she stares at him and for the first time in a long while, he is unable to see through her big eyes, unable to read her thoughts and gauge her feelings. and as the silence stretches, his mind wanders into dangerous territory. he’s done it. he’s ruined it, like he ruins everything. years on the road, travelling the world in an attempt to redeem himself, and he hasn’t changed at all. he’s… still not worthy of her. he will only ruin her, destr−

his train of poisoned thoughts is interrupted by her hand sliding up his side, touching the stump of his missing arm, and moving further up the slope between his shoulder and neck, to finally rest on his cheek. he lets out a breath he isn’t aware he’s been holding and the tension leaves his whole body. he leans into her touch on instinct−he’s found, these days, that he loves warmth. her warmth.

“you have me now. and i, you,” she says softly. “you’re home now, sasuke-kun.”

he pulls her closer so that she’s tucked snugly under his chin, her arms around him tight and secure as if she’s never going to let him go. he presses his lips against her forehead, and thinks it wouldn’t be so bad if she never did.

it’s so easy to say goodbye at first.

just walk him to the village gates, tell him he has five minutes before his mission starts, and kiss him goodbye. pretend like your gaze doesn’t linger on his back, pretend like watching the forest swallow him into the night doesn’t hurt.

pretend like you won’t eat meals alone the next few days, knowing a piece of you definitely isn’t gone because you’ve never believed in the “you make me whole” bullshit – only the “you add to my life” part of it.

and when you walk back home, pretend like you don’t purposefully avoid the roads you took with him so you don’t remember the memories that you still have: the feeling of holding his hand on the first sunny day you’ve seen in months, the feeling of laughing, the feeling of being.

sleeping in your bed alone doesn’t make you want to cry. smelling him in your sheets and feeling his touch ghost over your skin doesn’t hurt.
