Turn Characters as D&D classes (+subclasses)
For the hell of it, I’m assigning Turn characters a class and subclass from DND 5e. Yes I know that in a war setting, the soldiers will obviously gravitate towards the martial classes. But I’m also considering what class I think they would excel in the most, given each character's personality and actions throughout the show. Each will have a little bit of context because, well, I think you’ll see in a minute a crazy one that absolutely needs the context.
Abe: It’s funny to assign the nepobaby as a sorcerer, but I am rather going with College of Whispers Bard. Though bards are typically just support classes, this subclass also acts as a good option for espionage. The 6th-level feature Mantle of Whispers is a great option for infiltration, and as the show’s lead spy, I think it works perfectly. Also, we’re feeding into the bard stereotype #SLUT
Ben: He just screams Paladin, why lie. Now we may get into something a little controversial, and I am ready to defend my stance on the matter… he would be Oath of the Crown. NOW YES, I KNOW HOW THAT SOUNDS but just wait. In the show yes, he's a revolutionary fighting against the crown, but the tenets of the subclass really fit his character well. The tenets are law, loyalty, courage, and responsibility, and these paladins are loyal to the just laws of civilization. Key word “just.” This subclass is focused a lot on commanding attention on the battlefield, protecting allies, and even choosing to take damage for them. This oath is NOT just playing a royalist bootlicker, and it can EASILY be flavored as a freedom fighter against tyranny. Mechanically and in roleplay, I think this suits him the best.
Caleb: Oath of the Open Sea Paladin. YES, TWO PALADINS back to back. This one here is a lot easier to explain. Aura of Liberation fits his character well, and the subclass draws on aquatic elements frequently, which go with his role as a sailor and courier for the spy ring.
Mary: Peace Domain Cleric. I am biased because I played this subclass before and loved it. This is another support build focused around emboldening allies. Mary as a character is centered around her loyalty to her family and doing what she believes is right in order to protect them. But she’s not a pacifist and is still more than capable of killing people. *insert season 3 episode 7*
Robert: The better spy between him and Abe, I argue, is an Inquisitive Rogue. This is another subclass good for intelligence work, but excels with insightfulness and knowing enemy motives. I can’t really see him in combat, but I think he would really do well with the social aspects a Rogue has to offer. He can clock people’s shit after just a two-minute conversation and read Abe to filth in season 2.
Anna: Keeper Domain Cleric. I honestly think of Anna as the glue that keeps the main 4 together, and had some of the largest influence over Abe becoming a spy in the first place. The subclass puts a lot of its focus on sociability and the community each cleric is a part of. Also they get access to martial weapons, and I like the idea of Anna having a sword ok sue
Andre: School of Illusion Wizard. I am not assigning that man a martial class because the two times he was on a battlefield, he was watching from afar. School of Illusion is very good for deception, and as the British head of intelligence, there was a lot of that going on in the show. Also, he is really the embodiment of what low wis/high intel looks like in a person, and I truly mean that
Peggy: College of Glamour Bard. Full stop. They have a feature at 3rd-level where you can just talk to another creature for one minute to charm them, and even if it doesn’t work, they aren’t even aware of it. The other feature at that level is just glamourizing oneself, which fits with her basically never repeating an outfit ever.
Simcoe: Path of the Zealot Barbarian. I’m putting him as a barbarian just because of the sheer durability and damage output the class is capable of. And the number of times they tried to kill him in the show is crazy work. Putting him as a zealot for his views on the colonists we first hear about early in season 1, believing their arrogance ought to be punished to the fullest extent.
Rogers: Hunter Ranger. Look around, who’s surprised? I’m choosing not to clarify
Sackett: Artificer. Again, who on Earth is surprised? I just don’t really vibe with any of the subclasses that really go with how Sackett operates.
Hewlett: Circle of Stars Druid. That man yearns for astronomy, we know this. The only thing is, I really can’t imagine him ever using wild shape, but the subclass does offer alternatives, so he’s not just a bunny or whatever. Maybe he can be a horse. Idk
Washington: Order Domain Cleric. We love clerics in this house. But guys, he is literally the Commander in Chief. Objectively, he has the highest authority in any room he enters. Aurafarming king! A lot of this subclass has features that ultimately boil down to “ordering people what to do.” But as an experienced war veteran, I can easily see some kind of fighter multiclass for him as well. I wanted to stay away from multiclasses because that’s too much time, but we make exceptions.
I know I missed a few characters (Abigail, I have failed you), and honestly, my subclass assignments are not definitive. This may, in fact, just be my niche in the Turn fandom, but if anyone has other ideas or things they may disagree with, let me know!
