She told me: A bit of madness is key to give us to color to see Who knows where it will lead us? And that’s why they need us. So bring on the rebels The ripples from pebbles The painters, and poets, and plays And here’s to the fools who dream.

"Papa," Aidan starts, a surprisingly grumpy preteen this yule (though, with his adolescence swiftly arriving, it's less of a surprise), "I don't understand...why must we make such a big deal of this Christmas thing every year?" He adjusts the wreath of holly his mother had put on his head with tender amusement, and sighs. "I mean, it's not like it even exists outside of Midgard anyways."
He regards his son sympathetically and kneels before him, lifts the crown from his head, and sets it down lightly once more among his flame-red curls. Somehow, after Loki touches it, it seems a bit better balanced.
“We make a big deal of it because it is your mother’s favorite holiday,” he says, smiling sadly as he sits back on his heels and gazes up at the boy’s face. “And it is one of the few relics of her time on Earth that she has gotten to keep. Besides,” he continues, gets to his feet, and begins to touch to life the candles arranged on most of their home’s flat surfaces, “it isn’t as though the holiday is entirely foreign to Asgard; we have Jul, after all. And at the heart of both festivals is the same urge – that is, to surround ourselves so thoroughly with warmth and comfort that we forget that beyond our walls is scarcity and bitterness.”
He brushes back the curtain beside him, revealing the snow that catches the light of the room before it swirls back into the dark, and beckons Aidan to come stand by him. “I know she can seem… excessively enthusiastic about Christmas. And if you don’t wish to wear the holly this year, I’ll vouch for you. But it is important to her that she feel connected to the world she is from – that was once her home. And earnestly celebrating the holidays she enjoys is one of the most profound ways we can help her achieve that.”
Aidan barely resists the urge to roll his eyes some, dutifully listening to his father instead. “Yes, but father, why doesn’t she just visit Midgard then?” The boy realizes that his words are likely insensitive and sighs. “I’m sorry. I just don’t see why it’s such a big deal. I know she loves it, but why must we dress up like this?”
He joins his father and gazes beyond the curtain. “I know I am half human, but it all just seems so silly. Don’t we have better things to be worried about?”
He blinks down at his child when the first question comes, brow furrowed not in reprimand necessarily ( though it could certainly be interpreted that way ), but rather in confusion. And after Aidan apologizes Loki looks back at the snow beyond the window, folds his arms, and sighs quietly.
“Yes. We do. And that’s the reason for holidays – the real purpose of them. To forget, for just a moment, that we have more important matters to attend to. That is why the midwinter festival is celebrated with such vigor by those cultures that have one. As for your mother’s stake in it, it’s not just… Earth. Not all Midgardians celebrate Christmas, and most haven’t celebrated Jul in a thousand years. It’s… it’s her memories of her parents, of her childhood. It’s her culture. Her sense of belonging. It’s not tied to a place, Aidan – it’s a feeling, or series of them.”
“And yes,” he continues, and lifts the wreath from his son’s head with a small smirk – this time without replacing it. “Parts of its observation can be rather silly. And you can opt out of those you dislike. Since you didn’t choose her as a mother as I chose her as a wife,” he reasons, grinning slightly, “I would argue that she can’t really force you into ridiculous headwear as she has done me in the past.”
“Yes, but father, it’s ignorant to pretend that things aren’t happening, isn’t it?” There’s almost a slight whine to his voice, though once he realizes it, Aidan shuffles his posture, standing more rigid (at least as much as any pre-teen knows how). He considers his fathers words carefully, a small shadow of sadness crossing his features. He’s knows more of his paternal history than maternal, though his mother is always willing to share when he asks. But there’s always been a quiet mournfulness in her eyes when he does, and thus it isn’t as often as it used to be when he was younger.
“Does she not feel that she belongs here? I know you said it is a sense, not a place, but...she is loved here. Not just by us. You see how the palace children and the staff light up when she is near. She does this for all of us.” He frowns, clearly contemplating this larger concept.
“I know that Asgard is very different than Midgard, I’ve seen that first hand. But...” The boy sighs resting his hand on the window sill. “Has she really lost that much of ‘her’ culture? And why must she cling to it so? It’s been so very long since she lived there...why does she hold on to silly things like....her guitar, her trinkets?” He shakes his head. “Forgive me father, I’m not trying to be rude. I don’t understand. She told me once that she feels more Asgardian than human now, and I suppose...this...” he waves his arms at the decor that surrounds him, “is all part of a larger question.” He finally turns to observe his father, young features full of curiosity. “Are we not enough for her-that she feels the need to cling to ‘home’-so tightly, even now?”
He ruffles his hair with a hand as the wreath is removed, and sighs. “I’m sorry, father. I don’t sound very cheerful right now, I know. Sometimes I just wonder, and today with the wreaths, and the mistletoe and Eimi’s teasing...it was a bit much. But, surely you must know, I would choose her as my mother any day, and I will bear her silly trinkets if I must just to see her smile. As she would say, that is what family is.” He snorts to himself and looks back out the window. “Even if I do occasionally imagine strangling my sister with one of the garlands.”
YOU ARE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE

Fear floods his features, and he takes a defensive step back and stares at his wife in alarm.
“What? What for? What did I do?”
Her eyes widen slightly as fear crosses his face, and a gentle tendril of reassuring affection whispers across the bond to let him know of her jest despite her face maintaining the game.
“I thought I told you no more surprise gifts until Christmas, and then I walk into my study to find this?”
She waves a beautiful leather journal, not unlike the one she had given him so many years ago between them, her lips finally giving way to a warm hearted grin. “You make it impossible to keep up with your generosity, my love. And once again, you have my thanks for it.”
His relief is palpable – not just across the bond, but to anyone in the vicinity – and he slumps against the nearby wall and draws his hand down his face in an attempt to regain some of his dignity (and perhaps thaw his blood).
“Stars, my love,” he sighs, and manages a nervous smile in an attempt to match her grin. “You scared me.”
A pause, and then his grin widens a bit. “…I’m glad you like it. I thought you could use another.”
Her smile turns somewhat apologetic, and with a soft laugh full of empathy, she moves to his side and takes his hand. “I’m sorry, my love. I...didn’t think that one through, I’m afraid.”
She leans up to kiss his cheek, nuzzling the skin with her nose after. “Forgive your wife for nearly scaring you half to death. That’s hardly the spirit of the season, after all.” Emma chuckles at his comment and nods. “I have been writing much as of late, and it comes at little surprise to me that you knew just what to give me. Though, I must say...” her face turns mockingly serious. “While you seemingly can’t obey my commands on gifts, I do expect you to abide by my wish for you to stay out of my study until otherwise informed. I would be most sad if you found my surprises.”

"Please don't fuss over me"
Fluff fuel
“I’m not fussing, my love.”
He himself doesn’t seem convinced, though he at least feigns insistence well as he gently strokes her sweat-slick hair. The damp cloth in his hand is cool and remains so no matter how long it stays against her skin, and it smells strongly of ginger and mint.
“I’m just… attending.”
She smiles and chuckles quietly, though it is interrupted by a cough that manages to shake her frame. “You were always fond of your semantics.”
There’s a gentle teasing note in her voice, and as Emma closes her eyes, she allows her relief and gratitude to wash over him. “I’ll heal in time my love, I hope you know that by now. My powers are…not always friendly as they grow, but I don’t want you to worry overly much.” The empath winces as a sudden pain shoots through her abdomen. “I do feel bad, though. I shouldn’t be keeping you from your people-and before you say I come first as your wife-let me reassure you that I know of my standing. Even so, it annoys me…makes me feel weak to be shaken by such things that I cannot control.” She manages a weak shrug. “Three days I have kept you here, and while I would not have you anywhere else, I do regret taking you away from those who need you, and so for that I will ask forgiveness.”
“You need me,” he murmurs, and strokes her forehead with the cloth. Then he leans down and presses a kiss to her forehead and lays his cool hand across it like a punctuation mark.
“And you’re not weak. You know that already, but let me remind you of it. If this is indeed a result of your gift, it means that you are growing stronger; growth is pain. But that doesn’t mean that you must endure it alone, and my place is here. With you.”
“Compelling you against your will to endure my fussing,” he adds, a slight grin cracking his otherwise grim features.
"Yes, I do." She murmurs in return. Gone are the days where she might have protested, pushing him to leave her side. "I have always loved the coolness of your skin," she whispers, doing her best to control a sudden surge of heat that pulses with the golden mist that leaves her lungs with another cough.
"Thank you, my love." Her eyes open and find him, her smile returning. She gives a good natured roll of her eyes and laughs. "Yes, well. I learned to tolerate such things long ago." Her eyes dance with mischief, and a hand reaches for his as another sharp pain travels up her rib cage. "I'll admit, I likely did this to myself. I've been training too hard lately, and I suppose it had to catch up to me sometime."

Hello, December.
We would be together and have our books and at night be warm in bed together with the windows open and the stars bright.
