the great american novel began before america took the shape we see her in now. she was not hatched suddenly but thought of and conceived of and incubated. carried beneath the skin of so many, in that place behind the ribs and below the ribs. succored on liquor and meat and unpasteurized cheese and starved and fattened again. fattened and burned. she was no premature child. she waited through the movements of men. she took her nourishment from the inside, nursing her way below the crusades, beneath a world that must be flat, somewhere just off the edge of that great waterfall into the abyss. she waited.

There is something in the way Charlie spoke to her from behind. Something in the way he knew her home town. Something in the way he told her to slow down, that there is no need to hurry to the woman she has not yet become. Don't hurry, 49 is years away, such a long way away. There is something to be said in the regularity with which people tell us how time flies, because oh how the time does fly. But Charlie, Charlie stood, stands as a reminder rhat it does not in fact fly. That it possesses no set of earthly wings, no feathers from heaven. That time does in fact walk with dirty shoes and blistered feet and a bright red nose that no one can tell if it comes from the sun or wine. Charlie does not whine, but he does eat beef bourguignon, if and when a basque chef offers. There is something in the way that Charlie reminded her to take her clothes from the line because the sun had gone down, without actually telling her the sun had gone down. Without the sadness of reminding her the sun was down. Time put away his shoes for the evening, left them in the front room with the walking sticks so as not to track dirt through the house. Time flossed and shit and brushed his teeth. He washed his face and so did Charlie. The twin beds sat pushed together from the last time someone swept, and there stood Charlie and time, too polite and indifferent to separate them again. Charlie and time listened before bed, both thinking about how when women whisper between stone walls it sounds like water. There is something beautiful about it, something eerie.
I dreamt of a friend last night. That i finally saw him and asked him about everything. Well not everything I suppose, but of the things we have stopped speaking about. He was smiling, hugged me, was excited to see me. I asked him about the wedding and he lost his glow. I wish he would talk to me in real life. Tell me of his happiness, of his confusion, of his doom. His silence makes me wonder what the silence is driven by. Who the silence is driven by. Or is it me? Has he moved beyond, is he okay enough that he doesn’t need me anymore? Am I ok enough that I don’t need him anymore?
I worked it over all morning until I got tricked into listening to Jesus radio again. I just thought it was a Eminem/Brett Dennon collaboration.
That time we decided to camp in a hotel. Coleman 2 burner and everything.

Monterey hotel. Big Sur heaven. Film got mis-processed and I'm not even sad.
For A Good Time
I have been meaning to look up Oxbow, mining, Somerset. I don’t know which of these things to capitalize. Your guess as good as mine. But the kids weren't allowed out at gas stations, so they played in the bed of a truck. Muddy and hungry for sugar in their finest clothes, waving bows and arrows. Chickens would not have been out of place in this scene. Or a big dog, snapping and licking. They had never seen bathroom stall graffiti. The man staring from his silver nova knew just as well as I.

He made eye contact and ate too much corn dog in one bite. Hi my name is Rick, once I masturbated in the family bathroom at a mall. I’m not telling you which mall. Join us tonight for Navajo Tacos.
Little loves
I want to be blameless. I want to be left, not to leave. I want the city to lift itself from the earth and float out to sea. I will swim there if I want to find you, but for now leave me in the dirt and the trees. Leave me sitting half in the waves and entirely in the sunset. If I decided to let go, decided to go, what would that look like? That time I skipped my dentist appointment, does it look like that? Is it a new job or no job or an airstream in the desert. I don’t think I’m ready. Give me my veil back. Not to hide behind, but to carry around my neck, to float out the window along side the cacti of southern California.
This morning I woke up from a dream of a tsunami, then a flood of the undead. A house with too many windows on the first floor. A dream where I lost my keys too, and then my car was stolen. People filled a parking lot wearing my clothes and wrapped in my blankets, in my sleeping bag. The dream was too long and too real. I woke up wondering how I could secure the house, if there was a store of boards, of plywood, or if there were enough mattresses to hold the nightmare back. Scared for ten minutes and then some and I haven’t felt a dream like that in years.
Was it even Jesus who walked like that, or a woman dragging her child to safety? Not out of fear of past, or blind hope of future. Driven by a deeper importance of knowing what was behind and ahead. She wears a dress and holds a lantern high, stepping lightly across the sea.
Its not the written account, the history of homelessness that tells us the importance of a door and a kitchen, or a roof and the rare, wrap-around porch. It is a photograph, a tightening in a belly, a noise in the woods that points us home. Do we listen? Maybe, sometimes, when we can, when we want to, when we are slow enough and tired enough and lacking enough to hear the things we need rather than the things we want.
If the stars form us, not in the physical sense that only a mother can produce, but in our connectivity to the universe, to each other, to the minutia of ticks and traits, then why do they step out of their guiding role? Why stand disinterested? Are they feigning ambivalence from afar or do they mean it more than god?
