Antoine‑Félix Boisselier’s 1808 rendering of Culex transforms a minor Virgilian poem into a quiet epic of gratitude and remorse. A lone shepherd pauses before a funerary stele, its inscription honouring the smallest of guardians — the gnat that died warning him of the serpent at his feet. The wreath, the Arcadian landscape, the vigilant hound, and the coiled threat together stage a moment of moral clarity: even the most fragile life can perform a heroic act, and even the most powerful can be blind to it until it is gone. Boisselier elevates the pastoral into the mythic, letting a tiny creature’s sacrifice ripple through the stillness of the scene.
