Beautiful weather today 🌿

Met up with Urban Sketchers Newport on Charles Street before heading out to sketch.

I walked up to the junction with Stow Hill, capturing the steep cityscape — a fun challenge. Loved painting the morning light and shadows ☀️🎨

At one point, an elderly gentleman stopped to chat. He had spent a few years in Hong Kong working as a chef in the barracks and has visited Hong Kong many times since — such a warm and unexpected connection.

This year is the Year of the Horse, so I took the opportunity to create a simple watercolour study of a horse.

Working again with a limited palette, I focused on simplicity.

Time to stop making further changes. This oil painting is based on an urban sketch I did on location in August 2023 at High Street, Newport. The street is has very nice buildings and the day I sketched it was a lovely sunny day. I really liked the strong lights and shadows cast on the buildings that day and I have been thinking turning the sketch into an oil painting for a while. Now here’s the result. #oilpainting #oiloncanvas

Great meet up with B46 PleinAir Group at Goytre Wharf. Weather was ok at first but then around noon it started to rain. I had to retreat to Penelope Cafe, the cottage house in my sketch, to finish my sketch. Rain stopped for a while and I went back to the original spot I sketched this piece to take a photo. #urbansketchers #usk #urbansketchersnewport
