Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist known for his bold use of colours, solid lines and fluid painting style.
“The moment I had this box of colours in my hands, I had the feeling that my life was there. Like an animal that rushes to what it loves, I plunged straight in. Before, nothing interested me; afterwards, I had nothing on my mind but painting.”
– Henri Matisse
The population of Australian Ravens have increased in recent years due to the proliferation of refuse generated by our materialistic, disposable society.
Ravens negatively impact biodiversity; preying on other birds and asserting their dominance in territories.
The central figure adorned in Raven feathers and lace, surrounded by European Honey Bees and dandelions, is a metaphor for the impact of colonialism and the continuing impact of humans on the environment today.

A contemporary twist on this amazing Australian icon we call “Uluru” with it’s vibrant colour, which is so typical of the Australian outback.
For as long as I can remember, Uluru has been a place of interest.
Although I have painted it a few times prior, this is the first time in this surreal style.
Cathy Gilday All Roads Lead to Uluru Acrylic on stretched canvas Size: 61w x 41.5h x 3.5d cms

I painted ‘Strawberries Forever’ shortly after giving up sugar.
I was a major sugar freak so when I gave it up, I would look at pictures of sweets to get my fix instead! And so from these withdrawals this pop-surreal artwork emerged.
Featuring the fabulous Marilyn Monroe adorned with a delicious assortment of strawberry delights on her skin like tattoos.
These sweet treats were referenced from 1950’s lifestyle magazines.
The background was inspired by my grandmothers cross-stitched gingham tablecloths.

Mather reuses and recycles previous works and canvas, cutting them up and casting them amongst new landscapes.

A humorous take on the many challenges life throws at us.
This painting symbolises my position as an artist but also a person.
Life and breaking out as an artist is challenging but I’m the type of person that’s always up to the challenge.
I don’t see limitations, just opportunities to learn and grow.

Another in the series of whimsical and surreal still life paintings.

Through the process of collection and assembling.
Composed onto individually created backgrounds, creating a surreal visual language in which symbols, icons and familiarity are directed into a tense strangeness.
Woman Falling speaks to the uncertainty of today. A kind of self-portrait, asking questions and searching for answers.

The image depicts my thoughts on the Australian economy during the pandemic.
The image could also be seen as China as the Big Bad Wolf in the ongoing saga of the regional power struggles with its smaller more vulnerable yet free and happy neighbours.
My works often looks at political events that shape us and make us who we are.
I like to include some favourite childhood characters in an ongoing nostalgic Pop Art inspired soap opera.

Two of the most significant pop-culture releases of the nineties, inspired this artwork.
A tribute to the childlike wonder we all experienced. It’s wonderful to bury yourself in nostalgia, and in this piece.

Part of an ongoing body of still life photography, celebrating the beauty and the vices in her mother’s seventies home.
A play on blurring the lines between gallery worthy art and the informal art of domestic scenes.
It recognises that despite the forbidden opportunities that plagued women’s lives they not only took refuge, but excelled, in the transcendent ingenuity of lovingly curated objects and outfits.
A bold seventies inspired still life.

"I am Mother Nature. All of creation bows before me.
When people leave their cities and learn of me—walk in my woods, bathe in my rivers, eat of my harvest—they will find healing to their souls.
But stray from me and return to the supposed wisdom of men, and they will find themselves in chains once more.”
- Seth Adam Smith
I wanted to show Mother Nature dressed like a human in an effort to have her concerns taken seriously.
I’ve always be in awe of the way life on earth has evolved and maintained a balance but with the rise of humans, it appears the balance is shifting faster than the earth can regulate.
