Slow Fashion
“Seventy-five percent of fashion supply chain material ends up in landfills. This amounts to ‘the equivalent of one garbage truck of textile per second.” -Pulse of the Fashion Industry 2018 report
What is Slow Fashion?
Slow fashion is the widespread reaction to fast fashion. Unlike fast fashion, slow fashion production ensures quality manufacturing to lengthen the life of the garment. Developing a garment with a cultural and emotional connection is also pertinent to the purpose behind slow fashion: consumers will keep an article of clothing longer than one season if they feel emotionally or culturally connected to the article of clothing. Other slow fashion pioneers explain the movement as follows:
Slow fashion is the movement of designing, creating, and buying garments for quality and longevity. It encourages slower production schedules, fair wages, lower carbon footprints, and (ideally) zero waste. — Study NY
Slow fashion represents all things “eco,” “ethical," and “green” in one unified movement… the ‘slow approach’ intervenes as a revolutionary process in the contemporary world because it encourages taking time to ensure quality production, to give value to the product, and contemplate the connection with the environment. — Slow Factory
Slow fashion is about consuming and creating fashion consciously and with integrity. It connects social and environmental awareness and responsibility with the pleasure of wearing beautiful, well-made, and lasting clothing (as compared to the immediate gratification of fast Fashion). — Kat Collings, Editor in Chief at Who What Wear

The beginning of Slow Fashion
The term Slow Fashion came about quite organically. It was coined by Kate Fletcher of the Center for Sustainable Fashion, following the phenomena of the slow food movement. As with the slow food movement, Fletcher saw a need for a slower pace in the fashion industry.
It’s fair to say that Slow Fashion is 100% necessary, with brands like H&M burning 12 tonnes of unsold garments per year in spite of its ongoing sustainability efforts to close the loop in fashion.

Slow Fashion becomes a movement
During the pre-industrial revolution, people would buy durable cloths that would serve them for a long time. Clothing reflected the place and culture of the people wearing them.
In the modern day, Slow Fashion has seen some of these old ways coming back into the picture. It encourages us to buy less garment at higher quality, made from more sustainable processes. It also put emphasis on the art of clothes making and celebrates the skill of the craftsman who make them.
“Instead of chasing trends, slow fashion brands utilize enduring styles with layering options and create peace that are classic and versatile.”

Fashion Forecasting
Fashion forecasting is the practice of predicting the mood, behavior and buying habits of the consumer. In today’s world, fashion forecasting is more about looking into how and why they buy, based on their mood, beliefs and occasion rather than identifying the customers by age, income or geography. Fashion forecasters are responsible for attracting consumers and helping retail businesses and designers to sell their brands. Today, fashion industry workers rely on the internet to retrieve information on new looks, hot colors, celebrity wardrobes, and designer collections.
Forecasting the future demand for particular styles, fabrics and colors is an important aspect of the fashion industry. Fashion forecasting is an important activity to ensure that the process of observation related to short and long term planning can be based on sound and rational decision making and not hype. Forecasting is a creative process that can be understood, practiced and applied.

The role of a fashion forecaster
Fashion forecaster predicts which silhouettes colors, textures, fabrics, graphics, prints, footwear, accessories, etc. will be forthcoming trends on the runway and in retail stores from season to season. They do this by examining new and emerging trends across all industries, to see how they may influence future fashion trends.
There are two types of fashion forecasting: short-term and long-term. Short-term forecasting, known as fad forecasting, focuses on what trend will emerge across the next 1-2 years, while long term forecasting looks much further into the future, typically 5-10 years.
Internet plays a big role in fashion forecasting. Forecasters will research upcoming designer and celebrity collections and new looks popular on sites like Instagram. Ultimately, a fashion forecaster’s responsibility lies in assisting designers and retailers to attract more customers and sell their brand.
Why is fashion forecasting important?
Forecasting is used in almost every area of business today. Accurate analysis of consumer trends is vital in forming brand direction and development, in the creation of relevant products and services and ultimately in ensuring their success. In a fast moving and crowded marketplace, identifying ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ is crucial in staying one step ahead of the competition.
The modern consumer goes through clothes quickly and wants to be able to copy the trends they see. Subsequently, trends come and go much quicker than ever before. Forecasting needs to provide designer and retailers with fresh ideas constantly, otherwise they fall behind the competition.

What skills do you need to become a fashion forecaster?
To be a fashion forecaster you must first understand the world of a consumer. You must have an interest in a wide range of subjects, industries and cultures, as all these things influence and impact the latest trends. You also need to be prepared to embrace your personal intuition and put trust in your eyes for trends.
Spotting similarities is a big part of identifying trend – you should be able to look at a group of several images and spot what links them. However, forecasting requires you to do a lot of research too.
These two books have helped me a lot and I’ll recommend it to everyone who see this post. It’s not just for “artists”.
Whenever I don’t feel like doing work, I read some pages from these books and it helps me a lot.
It’s like the writer wrote everything that I wanted to hear/read.
@austinkleon thanks a lot for these books.
