Elaine Lustig Cohen

Born in 1927

She fell in love with modern art at a young age

In 1948 she married designer Alvin Lustig and worked in his office doing small tasks. 

When he died seven years later, she was expected by his clients to take over his business. 

In trial by fire,

she proved her talent and intuitive eye as a designer and rose to the challenge. 

She went on to specialize in book cover design 

and create over 100 covers for Meridian Books Publishing,

She cultivated her unique design style, drawing on the Avant-Garde and New Typography movements.

Open with one of her more avant grade type faced that builds into its final form and info on her life arranged in her famous b&w ad designs for Meridian Books. In the background as a secondary animation

It will start with only black and white designs

The video will scroll down 

The designs will begin to incorporate color, going from b&w, monochromatic to color and her more intricate compositions

The more complex designs she did for Meridian will put themselves together into their final compositions, and the focus will be on the books covers she designed throughout her life

Between each new book cover design piecing itself together, will be the info on her life and the influences, successes and quotes she has made on design

She was the wife of Alvin Lustig when, after his untimely death at the age of 40, she was expected to finish the work he had left for clients. In a trial by fire, she took over the commissions for her husband’s clients and applied what she had unconsciously absorbed from watching him, and obviously had a natural intuition for herself. She then went on to design more than a hundred book covers for Meridian Books, later marrying Arthur Cohen the book publisher of Meridian. The two later founded Ex Libris, a rare-book dealership of design books and pamphlets. 

She has gone on to do various designs and projects for museums and architecture firms and designing her own typefaces. She is highly influenced by Avant Grade design the New Typography and Modernist design movements of the 40s through the 50s blending them into her own personal, playful, eclectic style.
