With the recent Troy and Harris casting announcements, I have seen a lot of people casually (or sometimes even very confidently) talking about things that just don’t happen in the books as if they did. All of these stem from various speculations of “it would be intriguing/interesting/funny IF this thing happened” becoming “this thing DID actually happen,” which sometimes even goes further and gets warped in the world’s worst game of fandom telephone into “I am literally forming my perception and analysis of this character over this thing (that did not happen at all.)”
It is perfectly okay to not read the books, but I would really REALLY caution non-book readers to be careful with what they discuss unless it stems from an actual excerpt from the text.
This is not me gatekeeping. (Please! Go read the books! If you’re unsure of where to start, I would recommend reading Role Model first, which gives proper context for The Long Game) This is me attempting to counteract the misinformation that has only grown tenfold since Troy and Harris were cast.
With all that being said, a list of things that Did Not Happen In The Books:
Troy is not racist. This is a reasonable conclusion to draw, that a homophobic bully could also be racist, but there is no textual evidence of this.
On that note, Troy does not hatecrime Shane. Troy actually does not have any direct interactions with Shane at all. The closest they come to speaking with each other is when they’re on the ice at the same time during an Ottawa v. Montreal game.
Ilya does not hate Troy. Like all of the Centaurs, Ilya is wary and uncertain about Troy at first. He’s annoyed with the situation surrounding the trade, and he definitely hates Dallas. But he does not hate Troy.
I hate to break everyone’s hearts, but... Troy does not ask Ilya for Shane’s number. Troy thinks about doing this, but doesn’t actually follow through. This concept is so funny that I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually does this in the show. This is the actual excerpt from the book:

The way the audience was so included in the proshot for Hadestown! You see the faces of the people there, see their reactions, hear their cheers and laughter and of course the gasp when he turns around. Not enough to be distracting, but enough to record that this is theatre, not just a film, and we as the audience are part of the story, too, as much as the cast and musicians we see on stage.
When they sing we raise our cups and the audience raises their cups too
also this hadestown proshot is what made me realize that hades literally built all that stuff in hadestown FOR PERSEPHONE SO SHE'D WANT TO STAY like SHE'S the reason he made it artificially hot and bright!! he's trying to mimic summer so she doesn't leave!! how did I not realize this before????
ALSO i knew the reason orpheus could finish the song was because he finally understood the fear and doubt hades has every time persephone leaves BUT I DIDNT REALIZE THAT THE TRIAL HADES GIVES WAS ALSO BECAUSE HE UNDERSTOOD ORPHEUS AS WELL!! like hades knew he'd fail because HE'D fail!!
also also I know there's a Thing between hades and eurydice but I didn't realize that there was also one between persephone and orpheus until now, and I think it's intended to show that they're foils of one another, that pre-seasons hades was more like orpheus and pre-seasons persephone was more like eurydice and that their focus on orpheus and eurydice is because they remind them of what they had (and think they lost) - the love o+e have for each other reminds them of themselves, and so hades wants to take eurydice away/lock her away and persephone wants to protect orpheus/let him escape because they're trying to prevent them repeating their own mistakes in their own ways
like the slime tutorial did not give me these revelations, all musicals need professional recordings for this reason!!

Actually I’m going to make this a full post—it’s crazy how much hate Reid gets over the diet thing when the way she wrote it was very clearly Shane trying a fad diet type thing and then backing off. Shane has zero, nada, nilch diet thoughts in the Heated Rivalry book. He eats pasta and bagels and drinks multiple beers in a row without thinking about it once. He only mentions that during the season he often abstains from alcohol, which is very normal for athletes.
In TLG the diet is a new thing, and is directly linked to his age. His family and Ilya rib him about it because it’s new. He’s able to give it up fairly easily because it wasn’t an integral part of his psychology it was something he was doing in response to an acute worry (aging). There’s also the implication that Shane is soothed psychologically by restraint and discipline in general. But Shane’s diet stuff in TLG feels closer to like the year your friend watched Supersize Me and cut out fast food or something. And then decided eventually ah fuck it we all die anyway.
It’s Tierney who integrates Shane being weird about food into his overall character. And gives him a specifically macrobiotic diet, which lowkey feels like a racial micro-aggression to me, but whatever.

one of the centaurs' favorite games to play is called Catch Troy. the rules are simple: whenever Troy, who is both Short and Fast zooms by, they try to simply grab him and pick him up mid-zoom by. however, he is well aware of their intentions and he will be actively trying to dodge them. if they successfully grab him and pick him up- and this must be witnessed by one or more other players- they get a point. points reset at the end of every month.
the game is not without risk, he WILL be kicking and he has occasionally been known to bite
Shane joins the game which leads to him getting competitive over it, which leads to Ilya getting competitive too, which leads to Troy standing on the ledge of his locker cubby hissing at hollanov like an angry cat because they started grabbing him even when he wasn’t in zoomy mode
