Quintiple A’s

A while ago, someone told me that it's because people haven't really read the books. They've watched the show and read a ton of fanfiction. And certain aspects of the books are discussed in the fanfiction, but of course always in the way it works for the fanfiction, including ignoring certain details or exacerbating certain conflict. And then people go from there and think the interpretations they get from the fics are canon.

But I've seen people here claim they've read the books and still spout blatant lies about the books. The one that's making me grit my teeth the most and that has made me skip over fics even if they were recommended for me is this common belief that between the Boxing Day fight and the plane emergency landing, nothing happened. That somehow the emergency landing fixed their fight. When we see Ilya talk to Galina, we see Shane talk to Yuna, and we see a whole conversation over FaceTime between Shane and Ilya where they start communicating more openly and sharing things they've both held back for months. Including Ilya telling Shane that he is going to therapy.

That's just one of several examples, really. I just saw a post that claimed Ilya, at any point in The Long Game, fun of Shane for being booted from Montreal and letting people demean Shane, letting them treat Shane less than Ilya. That's never happening in the book either. I really don't know what it is in this fandom with the hate for the source material, and the need to twist what's actually in the source material or blatantly lying about it.

I saw someone say that they need to make it clear that Shane’s getting bullied on the Mets and that’s why he lashes out at Ilya but like. What if he isn’t. What if he lashes out at Ilya because Ilya’s asking him for something off script, and getting pissy with him, and Shane doesn’t know why, and he just wanted to have a nice day, and the last time he went over to Ilya’s the whole place smelled like weed, and they haven’t talked about hockey in months, and Shane knows from experience how to hit people where they hurt. And maybe he gets a little thrill doing that.
