I am not a writer but who gives a fuck (Alternatively: tips for Killjoys staying in the desert)
- The desert is not your friend. The desert is not your friend. The desert is not your friend. Do not forget this.
- At first it may seem harsh and unforgiving, but the longer you stay in the desert, the more it feels like home. It is okay to feel this way, but never ever let your guard down. Getting too comfortable with your surroundings is the downfall of many âJoys.
- The desert is very different from Battery City, and Killjoys escaping from the city are not always ready for such a huge change, no matter how many times they mentally prepare for it. Thinking about the desert is not the same as living in it.
- Once you escape, lie low for a bit. Gather supplies. Radios are important, as they will connect you to the world. Find a weapon, but donât use it. Donât draw attention to yourself just yet. These are new and dangerous waters, test out the terrain before getting all cocky.
- Find a group and stick with it. Close friends are a privilege, not a given. Never take them for granted and protect them with your life. They should do the same. You will have your highs and your lows together, but remember that you can always trust them.
- If you donât make any friends in the desert, thatâs okay. Just donât isolate yourself completely. Find some people. Listen to a broadcast on your radio to keep you company. (I recommend @000thestatic) Complete isolation will drive you insane.
- Killjoy names are important, but you donât need to come up with them just yet. Take your time and pick what feels right to you. There are no rules.Â
- Run the sand between your fingers. It may feel soft and it may feel coarse. This does not matter, because it will get inside everything regardless. Be prepared for this.
- If you come across a mailbox, pay your respects but do not linger. The Phoenix Witch is waiting for you to leave.
- Collect any rubbish you find. It will come in handy later.
- Keep a jacket on hand, but donât always wear it in the day. Heatstroke is a thing. But the nights get cold, and fire will alert others to your presence. This is not always wanted.
- It will be hard to sleep, and tempting to stay up all night. Night terrors are common. It will get better, but you still need to sleep. You canât fight draculoids if youâre also fighting sleep-deprivation. Staying rested is important.
- Food and drink are also important. Find water first, then find food. The desert is unforgiving, so remember to stay hydrated!
- If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts.
- Not all Killjoys are friends. Though we are all united against BL/ind, we can be different in our ways. (Cough cough VAL VELOCITY cough cough)Â Be open to the possibilities, both pleasant and unpleasant.
- Lastly, never let them take your colors. Keep making art in all its forms. You might think you have âno artistic talent,â (which is not true) but please, keep creating. Keep screaming. Keep making noise. Give no apologies, and keep running.Â
