2016 Cannes Film Festival

While German director Maren Ade’s film Toni Erdmann earned raves and came away the most critically lauded film of the festival, the 9 member jury of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival left it empty handed. 

At the closing awards ceremony only two women directors took home prizes: English director Andrea Arnold who won the Jury Prize for the third time and Houda Benyamina won the Camera d’or (Best First Film) for Divines.

Some unfortunate news: Jane Campion’s record of being the first (and only) female director to win the Palme d’or remains unbroken. And it has now been 55 years since a female director has won Best Director at the festival when Yuliya Solntseva (the first and only) female director won in that category. 

Gia Coppola to direct The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll

The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll is the story of Dare Wright, whose best-selling children’s book The Lonely Doll made her a household name in the 1950’s. Forty years later, journalist Jean Nathan in her search for the out-of-print book series, found Wright living in a public hospital in Queens, New York. Nathan’s book pieces together Wright’s bizarre life of glamour and isolation, and her struggle to escape her painful childhood through her art.

Two-time Oscar winner Jessica Lange and two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts are set to star in a feature adaptation.
