Skunder Boghossian (Ալեքսանտր Պօղոսեան), Self portrait, 1961.
Watercolor.
Skunder Boghossian emerged from a proud Armenian and Ethiopian tradition to become one of the most acclaimed contemporary artists from the African continent. His Armenian grandfather worked in international trade on behalf of the Ethiopian emperor Menelik II, and his father was imprisoned for many years for his active resistance against the Italian occupation. A pioneer of the Black Arts Movement, Boghossian’s art drew from many influences, notably ancient Ethiopian wall art and jazz music, which he described as “a combination of geniuses… the one thing we have, black folks, as artists”. He is the first contemporary African artist to have work purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
