Well folks, here it is. Our 5th anniversary! The quote above comes from my friend @bigfrozenfan shortly after our 4th anniversary and we think it's a perfect summary of the works of Arendelle Archives since its inception in 2021.
The Frozen franchise is a fine example of Disney world-building and with two movies, several short films and numerous novels, books and comics, there is A LOT of material to dig into an analyse. And that has always been the goal of the Archives-project: to provide a platform for fans who want to create their own analysis-projects, write articles, post findings and theories and so on. We want to be a stepping-stone for fans, both old and new, to explore some of the underlying, niche Frozen-topics that only gets a brief mention or hint in the movies. Like, what's the deal with Hans's ship? When was Arendelle founded? How did Runeard build his dam? Are there any accurate maps of Arendelle and other Disney kingdoms? What's the chronology of the movies and the novels? How many named characters are there in Arendelle and why are so many of them called Lars?
These are just a handful of topics that we have explored during our five years and with Frozen III on the horizon, we expect there will be plenty more lore to dig into very soon!
For this special day, our co-founder @saiten-gefroren wanted to share this message:
Today is a special day for us. It's the 5th anniversary of Arendelle Archives!
First, I want to say thanks to our team. It is the participation of us together that makes the Archives flourish and stay creative. Five years ago, we were only 4 members with 2 projects, but take a look at what we've achieved so far: there are 57 members on Discord with a variety of channels to discuss. There's a Tumblr blog where we post completed projects and answer to the questions people asked. We even have a video on YouTube through collaboration. I would say the achievements today have gone beyond my initial expectations, and I'm proud to be a member of Arendelle Archives.
Special thanks to my friend @virtual-winter who has always been enthusiastic and putting a lot of efforts here for all these years. The Archives would not be so lively without his sustained efforts.
Second, we will not stand still by admiring the past, of course. The next five years will be even more exciting! In one year and a little more, Frozen III will come out, followed by Frozen IV. I'm sure that the whole fandom will be heated once again in the next few years, and we royal archivists will get tons of documentations to work on then. I promise the Archives will always be a good platform to share ideas, discuss, collaborate and conduct projects freely.
We have obtained all these achievements together, and we will continue to do this together. The flag of Arendelle Archives will always fly! ššš
From our Discord-team, we would like to thank everyone who has commented, liked, reblogged and asked questions during these past five years and we're looking forward to the next five!
When he first appeared in the comics, he said that his family were a rightful rulers of Arendelle because of that horn
What if he was telling the truth? What if his family were the rightful rulers?
And if he ever does return into a comics or a graphic novel, what if he finds proof that his family were and still all the rightful rulers of? Arendelle
Hi again, Dragonknights-world,
I just read the comic after you had asked so apologies for the delay in replying! The story in this comic sounds SO interesting and has SO much lore for a regular comic you'd find in magazines. But I'm not complaining, I really enjoyed it! I'm all about the lore! So just allow me to do a breakdown on the story first then I'll get to your question! And for those who want to read the story, here's the link to @virtual-winter's Reddit post to part 1 and 2 of the comic story.
What I love about the story
There's so much about this sorry that I love: I like how we have a new neighbouring kingdom that is potentially related to Arendelle. I love how Elsa was intrigued to know more about Arendelle and her family's history since it could be related to the source of her powers - showing us that she's been wanting to find that out ever since she embraced them in Frozen. And I love how they go to Grand Pabbie for information and then are off to do their adventure, just like they did in Frozen 2. I love how we saw actual animals called Narwhals and how they were part of the story in some way. I liked the little puzzle at the end destination in the cave which led to a display of viking elements like the helmet and then the Lure Horn they were trying to find.
Frozen 3 vibes
felt like a mini movie or book which I loved!
This gave me major Frozen 3 vibes with the vikings being part of Arendelle's Royal family ancestry and somehow it linked to Elsa's powers. The Frozen 3 concept art shows a viking so we know that Frozen 3 will dive further into Norse mythology. Also the stranger who claims he's related to Elsa and Anna through ancient family ties is giving the mysterious member of the royal family set to appear in Frozen 3.
Connection the lore and unintentional Frozen 3 foreshadowing?
Also this kind of builds in my theory on the real reason why Elsa stayed behind in the Forest in From 2, which is because she feared danger now that the forest is free and more magic is exposed to the world and doesn't want history, like her grandfather's war, repeating itself. Thord who claims he's related to the sisters, is after the horn because he believes it could give him powers like Elsa's. So we have people fear Elsa's powers and try to kill her, and we have people who envy her powers and try to get their own set with her help. And obviously now we know Elsa's powers came from Ahtohallan all because it was a gift to Iduna as a reward for her sacrifice. The powers made Elsa and Anna the Fifth Spirit because Ahtohallan knew they could, together, balance humans and magic and save the world when those woe sides turn on each other.
Also instead of the horn giving Thord powers, it is called the Narwhals which means their ancestors are connected to the Narwhals in terms of having a relationship with the Narwhals. It's all part of the lore which I absolutely love and makes me believe Frozen 3 will touch on Arendelle's ancestry. And I hope the Narwhals are featured in the movie because they look majestic and could be other physical animals that the sisters connect with. Plus the horn has carvings inside of it of two sisters holding hands who Elsa and Anna believe are their great great great grandmother (Runeard 's grandmother's grandmother) and her sister and Thord said that the horn carried the strength of their family and Elsa and Anna believe it's the love for each other that's the strength so what if the carving sisters are the Fifth Spirit that was mentioned in the Myth short and Frozen 3 expanded on that hence the viking aesthetic the concept art is giving??! I mean it would make sense why Thord thought the horn would give him powers, because of the magical and literal bond the sisters in the carvings had and hearing about it made him envy for powers like Elsa's.
Reading this comic and coming up with this theory is blowing my mind and making me obsessed with lore!
Also one of these sisters has a cape and a single braid and off the shoulder neckline like Elsa whilst the other has two braids, cuff and neckline details/ designs like Anna and also has a viking helmet to show they're from those times. But I obviously don't know if the fight spirit idea it's hinting at was intentional. This comic was released in December 2016 and Frozen 2 was announced in March 2015 so maybe just maybe the Fifth Spirit thing was always an idea and this comic touched on it for the idea it had. I don't know for sure but either way I love this and this is my strongest headcanon theory that these two above are the Fifth Spirit we were told about in the Myth story which had them falling out of sync with the other elements suddenly and was never seen again. So they weren't a very successful Fifth Spirit as far as we know and Ahtohallan spent centuries looking for the next one through Iduna giving her the daughters who'd be the Fifth Spirit and create balance and harmony between the spirits, magic and humans and we're witnessing their story in hopes they'll be successful and prevent history repeating itself.
The Ask
Okay now to your question, do you think Thord is actually related to the sisters and proves so? Possibly yes! Because if the grandmother had a sister, perhaps she got married to a nearby kingdom or wanted to rule her own kingdom and had the Lur Horn. Perhaps that Lur marked their bond, especially if they were the original Fifth Spirit before Elsa and Anna, and it was stored somewhere safe with other artifacts from their era. And so Thord heard of that story from his kingdom and realized Queen Elsa from Arendelle had powers so he would go to the kingdom and find the Lur that he believed would give him powers but instead it just attracts the Narwhals and is a symbol of the love between Runeard's grandmother's grandmother and her sister who could possibly maybe be Thord's grandfather's grandmother's grandmother.
But overall, as much as I love this comic and their theory/ headcanon, I don't think these comics are strictly canon but then again we can consider them so if we wanted to but I wouldn't expect this mentioned if Frozen 3 has a similar story. Thank you for introducing me to this story because I had no idea how much lore could be in a comic story and give Frozen 3 vibes!
That's all for now but I will make a theory post explaining all this soon! āļø
Thanks for the tag! Sorry it took me forever to respond š
It's so funny to think about the impact of some of the Joe Books Frozen comics despite them being a decade old at this point! And I agree that "Lur thief" is among the most interesting written Frozen stories. The strangest thing about it is the cave puzzle for sure. Who built it? How does it operate? Why does it seem like it's designed to react to Elsa's powers even though the place must be many generations older than her? It reminds me a lot of an old episode of the sci-fi show Stargate SG-1 where the team is stuck on a planet and has to solve a Norse mythology-themed puzzle in a cave.
Here are some of my other thoughts about it.
About Thord
I think it's possible he was telling the truth about his origin, or at least some version of the truth. I doubt his claim about being the rightful heir to the throne was accurate but I really like your theory about him being related to the sister of Anna and Elsa's great-great-great-grandmother.
Not Vikings
Despite their attire, there is no chance Anna and Elsa's great-great-great-grandmother and her sister were Vikings as they lived "only" five generations before the time of Frozen (so probably in the late 1600s or early 1700s). The Viking Age was a period at the end of the Iron Age that lasted from around the late 700s to the mid 1000s, so many many generations earlier. Maybe the artist overestimated how distant of a relative the queen really was or perhaps they intended for the queen to be a big Viking-fan and wanted herself and her sister to be depicted as Viking rulers? This second option is definitely more interesting and is something that I have as a personal headcanon regarding Arendelle's history.
Them being from a "modern" time period also makes sense when you consider that the classic image of the Viking wearing a horned helmet is completely false. This idea was only popularised in the 1800s and has no basis in actual archaeological finds. This is such an easy trap to avoid and unfortunately, the franchise has doubled down on this depiction many times and chances are they might do it in the sequel as well. In the first movie though, something much closer to real Viking armour can be seen in the background:
There is some other Viking memorabilia seen in Arendelle castle both in the movies and the comics so it was probably always a big deal in Arendellian culture.
About the lur
I'm puzzled by the decision to call the horn the "elfenben lur". "Elfenben" is the Swedish word for "ivory" and the horn is definitely made of bronze (confirmed by Grand Pabbie in the story). But perhaps it has ivory decorations?
Bronze horns ("lur") of the type shown in the comic were common in Denmark during the Nordic Bronze Age (ca. 1800 ā 500 BC) so itās possible the kingdom mentioned in the story is meant to be Denmark or possibly The Southern Isles that could have had access to artefacts of that type. Itās also possible itās simply meant to be a āmodernā replica since it was engraved with pictures of existing people.
Your idea about the horn being a gift of friendship from their great-great-great-grandmother's own sister definitely adds more to the story! Much more than I think the author intended.
The engraving inside the bell is also a great example of the level of detail that went into these comics. I can totally see the implied resemblance between the two women and Elsa and Anna (upscaled and edited image):
Some years ago, I wrote an analysis covering Anna and Elsa's relatives that has some information and theories about the "Viking" sisters and other characters that appear in books and comics.
About narwhals
I agree they are some of the coolest creatures in the ocean. There was actually a short story released after Frozen 2 that featured Elsa and Olaf searching for a unicorn but they instead found a narwhal in the fjord. Elsa explains that narwhals are known as "unicorns of the sea." š¦
About the Fifth spirit
IDK how this comic could possibly play a part in the ongoing Fifth spirit lore. Since Jenn, Trent and others are probably not even aware of its existence, I'm (unfortunately) skeptical it'll have any impact on the continuation of Anna & Elsa's story in Frozen III. But it's still a very cool idea!
About Ćdemark Isle
My theory is that this island is (or was) a remote Arendellian colony similar to Iceland or Svalbard (still a part of Norway) that offered plenty of natural resources not found on the mainland: "exotic" game like polar bears, walruses etc., whales, minerals, coal etc. In my headcanon, Ćdemark was also [Spoiler Warning for the novel Polar Nights] the intended destination of the prison ship that was meant to transport Princess Inger. And yeah, I'm calling it "Ćdemark" since the original Odemark is clearly an anglicised version of the Norwegian and Swedish words for "wasteland".

We know that Kristoff and the Northuldras was inspired by the Saami, but after Frozen 2 placing Anna and Elsa as the descendants I left this aside, however, today I found a connection in the films!
Until then, only the Northuldras seemed to know about the Fifth Spirit, but there is another group that knows about Elsa's power and how it works, the ice collectors!
In the opening song of Frozen they talk about her, and I know this was just a resource used and aimed at us, but when we go back to the world of Frozen it's interesting for them to know.
Despite this, I don't think they stayed out of the forest the day it was sealed, but rather that it was a group that went to Arendelle much earlier and their legends ended up being diluted over time.
This aligns perfectly with my headcanon about Kristoff and the ice harvesters in Arendelle being a different branch of the Northuldra people. I like calling them the Southuldra as a reference to them both having one common ancestor: the "Uldra" people. You can actually find Northuldra spelled out as "North uldra" on the back of a book that is part of the scenery at Frozen Kingdom in Tokyo, indicating to me they are merely the northern branch. And since Northuldra is a name given to them by outsiders, it seems like a rational way to distinguish them from their southern relatives living in Arendelle.
As shown in the novel Dangerous secrets (ch. 22), the ice harvesters clothes are apparently so similar to those of the Northuldra that Iduna mistakes an ice harvester woman for her own people.
This passage also reveals a lot of other interesting stuff: the ice harvesters are nomads just like the Northuldra and sing the same kind of songs. I also find the line about the Northuldra having "expanded quite a bit before the day of the dam" interesting as it could mean there had been Northuldra living outside of the mist for over 30 years by the time of the movies.
Outside the movies and novels, a few comic books show that other members of Kristoff's people appear to be limited to only two lines of profession: ice harvesting and reindeer herding, possibly indicating they are only allowed to have these jobs and that they possibly belong to a different class than other Arendelle citizens.
There is an interesting comic called This land is our land that brings up a conflict between reindeer herders and muskox farmers and I've always seen it as a parallel to real-life conflicts of interest between the SƔmi and Scandinavian settlers. In the end though, both groups are convinced they are dependent on each other.
One reindeer herder named Yan reappears in the comic Reindeer games.
Also about magic, I've always found it interesting Kristoff wasn't the slightest bit surprised about Anna's question about seeing magic on the North Mountain and I do fancy the idea that his people has a deeper connection with folklore and mythology and treat magic as something more "everyday" compared to the average Arendellian (although that could of course be unique to him as he grew up with trolls).
I really hope Frozen III will explore Kristoff's family and that we'll learn something about his people.
We finally decided to look into the theory that Anna's Frozen Fever-birthday happened on a Tuesday, as suggested by these ānews articlesā found on bulletin boards near the Frozen attractions at EPCOT and Disneyland Paris.
We all know Anna was born on the summer solstice sometime in the early 1800s. The summer solstice in Norway alternates between June 20th-22nd, meaning there are several possible candidates for the date of Annaās birthday.
We consulted the sites https://www.rocketcalendar.com/ and https://www.timeanddate.com/ to obtain data for calendar dates and solstice dates for Norway (Oslo) in the the early to mid-1800s.
Solstice and equinox data from timeanddate.com
We then set the condition of wanting either the 21st or the 22nd day of June (Frozen Fever) to be a Tuesday and matched this with the date of the summer solstice 19 years earlier. For the sake of convenience, we chose to limit the analysis to the years 1840-1859. This resulted in the following table:
As you can see, there are a few matches but unfortunately not as many as we had hoped. When a leap year happens, the calendar days get pushed forward two dates instead of one, causing June 21st to āmissā a Tuesday at one occasion (1848).
There are still four instances in the 1840s and 50s when the date for a Tuesday on June 21st or 22nd match with the date of a summer solstice 19 years earlier: in 1841, 1853, 1858 and 1859 (and likely a few more in the following decades).
1841 gets disqualified because it does not add up with the timeline established in Frozen II, where the shipwreck map indicates Agnarr and Idunaās voyage could not have happened before 1840, meaning Frozen Fever must take place in 1844 or later.
The other three dates are possible candidates. Only downside being they do not take place in the 1840s.
Calendars from rocketcalendar.com
Is this "news article" from the Southern Isles Gazette trustworthy? Because of how much the only possible years for Frozen Fever deviates from the established idea that "Frozen takes place in the 1840s", we would say details like these found in the Disney parks or elsewhere that are most likely written without the supervision of the filmmakers should probably not be interpreted as "truths" straight away. They can be fun details when they work with and complement the established Frozen-timeline. When they don't work they're instead an annoyance for us fans who wish the world of Frozen was one cohesive universe with greater attention to the little details.
We will return shortly and analyse a similar matter concerning the calendar featured in the anthology-book A Year with Elsa & Anna.
An Ride Into Arendellian Railways and Its Historical Counterparts
With the limited presence of rail infrastructure that is shown in the Frozen verse once being a spinoff short Operation Puffin and a short comic of a queens journey to a foreign country we take a deep dive look into truly one of the most unique aspects of Frozen but not because of its greatness of the material shown as soon we'll find out.
Arendelle Stream Falls Scene
A Union Pacific freight passing at the scenic location Multnomah Falls in State of Oregon, United States where tourist can view the falls from the bridge oversight. A relevant image to this post because it features a train but most importantly this scenic location was used as inspiration for the bridge waterfall scene near the ending of Frozen 2 even the bridge design is incredibility identical.
Operation Puffins: The Regional Express
An unique short film to have featured the presence of a completed Arendelle railway that is the scene throughout most of the film.
Although the train is shown in Lego form it was easy to have match to its real life counterparts considering there was strong details and features throughout the train that made it uniquely identical to its historical counterparts. As a disclaimer the designs may have been truly inspired and use as reference but this analysis is based on resemblance and characteristics.
Arendellian Steam Locomotive - Type 14a 4-6-0
The steam locomotive featured in the short is identical to an American descent locomotive that had operated on the Norwegian railways in the late 18th century and has a rich history during its days of operation.
The Type 14a 4-6-0 was a series class of locomotives that operated on the Norwegian State Railways was unique as it was the rare few locomotive in their fleet to had been designed and built in the United States but serve their time in the country. They were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1879 and then were shipped over, mind you as fully built complete locomotives overseas. The locomotive featured in the film has very classy design characteristics just like its real life counterparts made them most American style locomotives to have operated on the Norwegian railways.
The biggest identifical feature is the plow mounted on the locomotive which featured a grilled design which was a style only found on American trains of their time along with the headlamp style standardized by the United States Railroad Administration (USRA). There was only four of this class of locomotives ever made each given their own uniquely name the "America", "Washington", "Leiv", and "Baldwin" with three being retired from service in 1925 and the last one "America" final retirement in 1934. Unfornuately none were preserved in a museum but historical records still are archived such as drawing and blueprints. A little concidence on the filmmakers part to include an American style locomotive in Norway but opened up a rich and unique history of a not so far distant era of Norwegian railroading.
A photo of the cab and controls of a similar Baldwin engine the same era.
Passenger Train coaches - BR Mark 1 Coaches
We travel back to Europe for this comparison as the passenger coaches featured on the Arendellian train are of descendants of a turning point of United Kingdom Rail history. In the early 1950s UK rail system known as British Railways (BR) begin the era of mass standardlization the rail coach featured in the images above will be known as the BR MK 1 indicating first designs of mass standardization of railway carriages these would be introduced in 1951 and begin to fall out of service until the 1974 when later modern designs took over. Alot of these coaches offer a vintage atmosphere old fashioned style interior with wood glazed paneling and curtains which should sounds similiar to a certain "Castle interior design" :). With these coaches serving British Railway along with an alternative universe (Frozen) they were designed for speeds up to 100~110 Miles Per Hour (MPH) and came with electric lighting and heating, Yes! you heard that right Arendelle being a kingdom in the 18th century has trains that can go up to high speed up to 100 miles per hour and electric innovations! mid 19th century railroading in a 18th century universe timeline.
The resemblance is incredibility remarkable although unfortunately I couldn't find a artwork or paint job that matches similar to how the train was designed in the short film although I will bring these specific train coaches back in a later discussion.
Frozen Comic Anna Souvenirs: A Train of Revolution
The train featured in this comic is the upmost special out of them all and also is the most realistic with the Frozen universe (Particularly pre Frozen 1). Although the version featured in the comic is one less wheel than the original its inspired by a range of locomotives built by Robert Stephson a famous UK engineer of his time in 1835 these direct descendants was the first locomotive to ever exist in Europe and marks the age of the birth of rail transport innovation. This particular steam locomotive model featured in the left image named "Adler" was also the first locomotive to ever operate in Germany which fits the language of this comic coincidentally. With the train featured in this comic being a more generic outline there is not right or wrong exact answers of which exact model of locomotive it can be but rather a hint at of a diverse range of locomotives made by the same manufacturer in the UK of a revolutionary era.
A Very Derailed Timeline
The Frozen timeline shares its inconsistency but truly the railroad spectrum is a wild one with each type of Frozen media having its own representation of what historical timeline is followed it seems. Operation Puffins features the most futuristic trains out of all the time media with passenger coaches from a FULL century ahead of the canonical Frozen timeline which the film implies that alot of technological advancements and innovations had rapidly take place all within a short timeline in the Frozen realm to put into perspective of how out of place if would be for the timeline to follow historical account using Operation Puffins as a basis the United Kingdom would introduce the world's first High Speed intercity train known as the Class 43 in 1975 being the fastest train of its era which would only put it in 1867 in the Frozen universe considering the 24 year difference (21 after Frozen 2). Although the more realistic outcome would be using Frozen 2 that shows early construction of a railroad system along the Arendelle hillside and the one comic that featured the earliest form of rail transportation.
The Class 43 High Speed Train Introduced in the UK in 1975 featuring the "Dynamics Lines" livery ownership of the First Great Western Railway. This was introduced only 24 years after the train coaches featured in Operation Puffins
Thank you @tehgfhewe for your interesting question.
These are the coats of arms on the castle wall that you are referring to:
This question has been on the minds of Frozen fans for 12 years and has repeatedly prompted some fans to post further questions and speculations about it on Tumblr, Reddit and elsewhere. Here are two examples from this forum:
Why are there different shields on the front of Arendelle's castle?
Anyone ever take notice of the coats of arms on the castle walls in OFA?
In May 2020, I (@bigfrozenfan) took up the topic (first link above), researched it further and prepared it for publication on my Tumblr blog. This promptly sparked a wider discussion among many Frozen fans on Tumblr and led to further facts: LINK
As it turned out, many if not all of the 18 shields had counterparts among real-life coats of arms of Norwegian municipalities and were clearly inspired by Norwegian heraldic symbols:
šGraphics created by @azaffranist
Note that there are (almost) no repetitions when it comes to what county (Norwegian: fylke) the municipalities are located in. All of Norway's counties are equally represented (except for Oslo and Bergen).
To cut a long story short, it was actually just a simple question, but one that revealed the very complex nature of the possible answers and led to many new questions that (like with so many other Frozen-topics) will likely never be fully answered.
As you can see, your original question has been largely answered (these are indeed the coats of arms of the provinces of Arendelle), but we have of course continued our research and now also included Frozen II and currently available map-material on the Frozenverse from books and previous research by Arendelle Archives, in particular the maps collected by @virtual-winter (all of the posts are published here on our blog, in particular his 2021 project Frozen Geography as well as the 2025 and 2026 entries to the Frozen Map Bonanza.
Here's an updated version of the castle wall view, taken from a Youtube-video featuring gameplay from the Disney mobile game Frozen Adventures from around 2021 (upscaled by @snowflaketale12):
In the Disney comic collection Storied Places from 2019, only 16 coats of arms are present on the castle walls and four of them are unique to this book and do not appear in the movies.
Why these four are different is unknown, but they also have close counterparts in Norway:
@virtual-winter did some additional research and identified seven additional matches among Norwegian municipalities' coats of arms. So, here's the updated final picture, together with @azaffranist's original graphics:
As you all know, Disney did a lot of research in advance for the production of Frozen, especially in Norway. Unfortunately, we don't know the full scope of their research or the full level of Norwegian culture, history and geography they had at hand when designing Arendelle. So far, the official map material provided (even in the more detailed books) has been missing out on a lot of details and there are still many unanswered questions about the kingdom of Arendelle (size, history, previous rulers, etc.).
To be honest, it is now questionable whether we will ever get answers to all the burning questions from Disney (I will spare you the extremely long list at this point). With the sequels Frozen III and IV coming out soon, some of us fans are willing to bet that this time, just like before, many questions will be raised but remain unanswered again.
This makes it all the more likely that we will continue to rely on our own research and conclusions, and the (ever-growing) Discord team at Arendelle Archives has dedicated itself to this task. Incidentally, we call ourselves āRoyal Archivistsā for a reason, and they certainly don't always have it easy. Sometimes, it turns into a full-time job for some of our projects and would be impossible to manage without the help of many people. Whenever a particularly important discussion is brought up, we might deploy either of these labels to show we mean business:
But we are die-hard Frozen fans and we won't give up on finding out the facts about the Frozen films and sharing them with other Frozen fans.
We would also like to send a big thank you to all those who send us questions here on our Tumblr blog!
Some of them are so interesting that even we experienced archivists haven't come across them yet and are really amazed that we haven't thought of them ourselves.
But let's stick with the coats of arms of Arendelle for now. I found what I was looking for on Reddit again and would like to add the following information and a few of my own speculations to my 2020 post.
There are currently over 500 coats of arms in Norway, and who knows how many of them have been added, changed or even completely disappeared since 1840, the time in which Frozen is set. Who knows whether Disney has researched this in documents that are not publicly or easily accessible.
Quote from the following website Heraldry-Wiki/Norway:
āNorway is divided into 19 administrative regions, known as counties (fylker, singular: fylke), and 429 municipalities. The capital, Oslo, is considered both a county and a municipality. All counties and municipalities use arms.ā
So two things become apparent here:
The complexity of the Kingdom of Arendelle cannot be denied, and
azaffranist said at the end of the addition to my post: āArendelle is much bigger than we all thoughtā¦ā, but given the new information, Arendelle may not be as big as we thought, even though a family in OFA baked a cake in the shape of Norway, leading some of us to believe that Arendelle is a kingdom as big as the entire country.
But more likely is, quote by @virtual-winter: āGoing by the dimensions on the Frozen II map, Arendelle is still a small kingdom, many times smaller than Norway. Around 10 000 sq km (3 800 sq mi), about the same size as Lebanon or Kosovo. Yet still much bigger than just the town + castle. My theory is that the coats of arms represent 18 provinces, possibly with the 'capital' being a 19th area represented by the crocus shield. 'Provinces' are actually mentioned on a warning poster for the Duke of Weselton (found at EPCOT) as well as in the story Cold secrets deep down from the novel All is found and would be the equivalent of Norway's fylken (counties), i.e. a higher administrative level than municipalities or cities.ā
It can be assumed that just like Norway, all the settlements within the Kingdom of Arendelle have their own coat of arms, with Arendelle as the capital in the middle, and we only saw 18+1 coats of arms on the castle wall in the films. Only 19 of possibly hundreds outside the borders of this kingdom.
Disney itself always describes Arendelle as a ātownā or āvillageā, but not as a ācityā or even a ācapitalā, as befits a kingdom. Elsa is even sometimes referred to as "Queen of the village" in the Anna & Elsa chapter books. So how small did they really imagine Arendelle to be, or had they planned it to be?
And the next fact to illustrate the scale is the distance to the Northuldra territory. According to research by @virtual-winter, the monoliths near the dam are only about a day's journey from Arendelle away (110 km, to be precise, as he found out) and can therefore also be reached on foot in a relatively short time (which is also consistent with what we see in Frozen II).
Why the former King Runeard had the dam built there ā for whatever reason ā also remains one of the many mysteries that intrigue Frozen fans, because the dam would be too far away to supply Arendelle with water (on the maps we have seen, there is no direct waterway from the dam to the agricultural areas around Arendelle), and electricity, or a reason to generate it, does not yet exist in the Frozenverse. See our own speculations on this question here: LINK. The Alta Dam in Troms og Finnmark county in northern Norway was certainly the model for the dam in Frozen II, and unlike the construction and subsequent effects in Frozen II, the generation of electricity was the main reason for building this dam. So is the reason solely Runeard's expansion of power into the north? Who knowsā¦
As a closing act, I wanted to see how close together the different counties were in real-life Norway:
I was curious to see how near to Arendelle the provinces are, aka their pendent in Norway, and made a little (2 hrs) map test where in Norway all the coat-of-arms are located. It seems most of them are concentrated in southern Norway, in the area of Oslo (Ćstfold, Aust-Agder, Vest-Agder and Telemark), a few are near of it (Hordaland, Buskerud, Rogaland and Sogn og Fjordane). I think some can be excluded because they are far to the north in Troms, Nordland and Nord- and SĆør-TrĆøndelag and also 2 in MĆøre og Romsdal.
This map with roughly placed arms is the result:

That's right, there is more than just in-depth studies of Frozen kingdoms and family trees in the Archive cabinets.
This was my present to the Arendelle Archives discord server for the new year! A quick recap of every large scale map we've seen in the Frozen franchise so far.
Here they are in order of appearance:
1. Frozen - The Troll Map (2013)
A supposedly ancient map that guided the royal family to the Valley of the Living Rock on the night of the accident. In the novel Dangerous Secrets (2020), it was revealed that the map had once belonged to Agnarr's mother Queen Rita. Ironically, later maps have proven this location of the Troll Valley to be incorrect.
2. Frozen Free Fall (2014)
A massive 3d-map assembled from screenshots of the mobile game Frozen Free Fall. Shared by u/DuckOfDuckness on reddit (full quality in the comments). Some of the locations, like the Troll Valley on the middle left, are actually consistent with later maps.
3. Frozen Fever (2015)
The first map that showed us the outline of Arendelle and The Southern Isles. Thanks to this, fans quickly deduced that Hans's home country was based on the Danish island Funen (Fyn). Note: "Nordsoen" (technically NordsĆøen) is Danish for the North Sea, the real sea between Scandinavia, Denmark and the British Isles.
4. Frozen: Live at the Hyperion - Arendelle History 101 Queue Video (2015)
The only official map so far to feature Weselton. An expansion of the map from Frozen Fever. Shared by u/ArendelleKnight on reddit (video). Notice how the seemingly small island gets cut off on the left? I suspect Weselton is a bit bigger than what's seen here. Edit by me on the right.
5. Sailing Sisters (2016)
A comic book map I very recently analysed in my Frozen-project covering the kingdom of Vakretta! Arendelle is to the right and Vakretta is to the left. Also, notice how the large island at the top appears to be in the same location as Weselton on the previous map.
6. Forest of Shadows (2019)
The first and only map so far to show actual places of interest in the kingdom. The locations of Oaken's trade post, the Troll Valley as well as the Roaring River are consistent with the Frozen Free Fall-map! A very interesting map overall. Just don't look too close at the misaligned grid compared to the compass. Or the ridiculously wide fjord...
A proper little treasure revealed to me by @saiten-gefroren through his Frozen timeline project Annals of Frozen in 2021. Originally posted on Instagram by @imdaaddlepate. Edit by me on the right.
8. Frozen II: Spirits of the Enchanted Forest - Iduna's Map (2019)
A re-imagining of the scene from the movie (even though the book was released before the movie) and actually showed the whole map, including The Southern Isles. In this version, Ahtohallan is a mapped landmass rather than just a sketch! According to what's revealed in Dangerous Secrets, this actually makes sense!
9. Frozen II: Look and Find (2019)
This version of the map also shows Ahtohallan as a mapped landmass.
10. The Art of Frozen II - Arendelle Town Map
Concept art (3D model) for Frozen II by David Womersley. According to the map, this part of the town is called"Arendelle North", suggesting the other (southern) half of the town is called "Arendelle South."
11. Frozen II - Iduna's Map (2019)
The map seen in the movie showing the borders of Arendelle and Northuldra. Rivers are consistent with the map from Forest of Shadows, meaning the Roaring River marks Arendelle's northern border. This map was a breakthrough for analysing Arendelle's location, as it features real coordinates along the "frame". You can find interesting theories about this here, here and here (my own project). Edits by me.
12. Frozen: The Saga - The Legacy of Anna and Elsa - Iduna's Map (2020)
Iduna's map before she hid it in the watertight compartment. Like the movie map, this one is cut off at the bottom and is missing The Southern Isles.
13. The Love Tree (2021)
An adaptation of the map from Frozen Fever. To my knowledge, this is the only other time we've seen this particular map design appear in a comic. What's odd is that (besides using the outdated geography) Kai is pointing out the land across the Arenfjord as if it belongs to Arendelle when the map from Frozen II clearly showed it doesn't. But at least we can credit the artist for getting the compass angle right!
14. Disney Wish - Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure (2022)
A slightly adapted version of the map from Frozen Fever, with "Nordsoen" (North Sea) written in English instead of the original Danish. The "frame" also features added coordinates. Unfortunately, the latitude is off by one degree compared to the map from Frozen II. The third pic was very kindly shared with me on discord by BadAtNamesAndFaces.
15. Tokyo DisneySea: Frozen Kingdom - Royal Banquet of Arendelle (2024)
This is the complete version of Iduna's map from Frozen II. Found in one of the dining halls of the Royal Banquet of Arendelle restaurant. The map once again confirms the borders of Arendelle and Northuldra.
Many variations of this cartoon-y map have been included in the Frozen Official magazine throughout the years but this is to my knowledge the first time it has appeared "in-universe". Locations and rivers are consistent with previous maps. Note: the "Best ice in Arendelle!"-spot by the North Mountain is actually located outside the kingdom. It seems Kristoff doesn't have the best navigation skills š
It's been over a year and we found some time to collect some entries that did not get included/were not on our radar last time.
NOTE: there are a few park maps from the Frozen worlds in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Paris but we chose not to include them because they do not represent the in-universe geography of Arendelle. We might however return with a comparison of the "official" maps and the park maps in the future and discuss some differences.
17. Map of some part of Arendelle from the comic āThe nature scientistā (2022)
Like many other maps found in the Official Magazine, this does not seem to match the official geography or Arendelle at all. According to the dialogue, the map shows nature sights of interest in the kingdom.
18. Map of some part of Arendelle from the comic āThe perfect picnic/Picnic for a medalā (2022)
This map appears to be identical to the previous one.
19. Map for the journey from Arendelle to Brinnon from the comic āAnnaās souvenirs/Annaās travelsā (2024)
It would be difficult navigating the seas using this one.
20. Map from the book āFrozen: First look and findā (2015)
Doesn't look very useful but the colours are nice.
21. Map of some part of Arendelle from the comic āThe ancient cave/The ship in the iceā (2024)
This one is different from the previous two comics and has some detail to it. Unfortunately, it does not match the official geography. The map shows the way to a cave near the Valley of the living rock hiding a frozen Viking ship.
22. Collector sticker from the āFrozen: Maps of Wonderā Panini sticker collection (2023)
Apparently, Arendelle is dealing with some tectonic super drift because Arendfjord is getting suspiciously wide (this was present on the Forest of shadows-map as well). Also, the rudder on that ship is doing nothing.
Does anyone know if there is nobility in Arendelle? Besides Anna and Elsa, are there any other nobles in Arendelle, such as counts, viscounts, dukes, etc.?
The information on this topic is extremely limited and not even the "expanded universe" ever gives us any definitive answers. The only known person with a known nobility-status in Arendelle was Lord Peterssen and possibly a man named Frederick who were both members of the royal council of Arendelle. Both are featured in the novel Dangerous secrets (2020). Lord Peterssen was also an important character in the novel Conceal, don't feel (2019).
Dangerous secrets also mentions Iduna dancing with "some random noble's son" as well as "a crowd of upper-class Arendellians" attending a royal ball at the castle.
