aramis’ father was abusive, but very rarely to aramis himself. the violence was reserved for the women in their life. though his own mother always excused it by saying boys will be boys, aramis knew this was wrong.

a combination of nature and trauma made aramis develop what we would now call borderline personality disorder. however, at the time of his would-be diagnosis, no one had the terminology for it. aramis’ father never saw anything wrong with his son’s extreme bursts of anger, anyway. ‘boys will be boys,’ remember.

but aramis found his own anger draining. exhausting. he still does. he knows it’s abnormal. he knows it’s not because he’s a man and he knows it’s not how things should be.

unfortunately, in this time period, there’s still a lack of suitable medication. aramis is kind of a functional addict right now because in his largely futile quest for decent medication, he finds himself just taking any pill or drug or alcohol to palliate the pain of his emotions.

he does his best to be a good, gentle, compassionate person, especially to women. he really wants to break a cycle of deeply toxic masculinity. we’re here for healthy masculinity! but sometimes he does succumb to resentment, often towards family, and is frequently impulsive and turbulent.

a testament to his impulsiveness and turbulence: his affair with marina liu-badeaux, the wife of the (now-deceased) dean. rip. despite the fact that it’s undoubtedly ill-advised, however, aramis doesn’t regret the relationship itself. it’s probably tragic and breaching decorum, but he loves knowing he’s able to love. one of the worst stereotypes about people with Brains Like His is that they cannot truly love ever. he’s like, YEAH, kiss my ass. i DO know how to LOVE. (also it was utterly justified in his mind due to how poorly rina was treated by her spouse but still, like,,,)

he studied to become an anthropology professor bc he genuinely loves teaching/learning and understanding why society is the way it is soothes his anxieties most of the time, though there will of course be times when erudition can’t solve all of his problems.

he loves american stuff! you’ll find him emulating ‘american style’ a lot, like bomber jackets and the hairstyles and listening to their music, even the most horrible songs. he does actually smoke but sometimes he’ll literally just be posing with an unlit cigarette For The Aesthetic. he wants to look like an american movie star(TM)
